Never seen anyone use them but there's some big boys in there, seen a pro BB'er squatting ~300kg deep for reps, another guy regularly benching 180kg+ etc so wouldn't be surprised if they've used them

Seen vids of Ronnie benching 100+kg db's for reps, range of motion looks pretty small but I think that's just coz of the sheer size of him

Can use big dumbells for deadlifts.

What did you jew ?

Posted a picture of a girl with a horse tail buttplug, in the wasteland, with no nudity showing at all (covered by the tail). Apparently this counts as porn (most people I've shown it to have agreed it was soft compared to regular wasteland fare) and is worthy of a no warning ban...

Are your strength gains increasing? I wouldn't worry if they are.

It's amazing how much body fat you actually have. unless your aim is to 'look' big dont put on false size.

I rate power to weight ratios. Again, it's whatever goal you're after, look good in a shirt, or look good naked.

This. Let the strength gains put on the kg. People get too caught up in weight figures when trying to get big, which are meaningless without BF% to back them up. It kind of mystifies me when someone says they would like to weigh xxxkg or set weight goals without knowing what they'll look like at that weight.

Also big on power to weight ratios. Putting on fat is only going to reduce this! I love being light at 79kg and benching the same (and sometimes more) than my 100kg friends.

Thanks guys!

Strength gains is increasing for sure.

I checked out my previous program and I am lifting heavier while also keeping up the same reps (sometimes even more)

Guess I will just keep going the way I have been and see where I am over the next few months

dunno if i agree on the costings of the DB's. Friend of mine can get up to 40kg DBs in increments on 2.5kg for $2500.00. That price is from a wholesaler, he has a girlfriend working for the company.

I do however agree to appealing to the masses.

agree they just don't get used in a commercial gym... the 45s are the heaviest in my gym and the knurling on them is super fresh and grippy... nobody ever uses them!

I watched a young bloke get PINNED under a couple of 25s trying to bench press them the other day... watching him and his mate try and get them off his chest without him falling off the bench was classic... they then proceeded to do barbell bench press with too much weight and the spotter didn't let go of the bar at all during the entire set... sometimes you just have to stare in amazement

Figjam, truth be known I can get some as cheap as your friend. However I would run into the same problems as buying say a grade 2 r32 gtst for an extremely cheap price from a jap auction, case being ....... You generally wouldn't (in a commercial environment)

Picture 50kilo dumbells sheathing whilst they are above your chest on your tenth rep and the Db plates fall off on your chest or even face.

Buying cheap crappy dumbells or barbells in a commercial environment really shows a lack of duty of care from the owner. Fortunately most commercial gyms I go to the quality of dumbells are good.

I'm up at 65kg DB presses now from 60kg. Still need to push heavier for my weight and height.

As what's mentioned above, always be cautious of the quality. Quality of dumbells I've used are preeminent

Old gym I used to go to had dumbells with big round balls on the ends instead of plates. The whole dumbell was one piece. Looked like they were from the 70s (probably were). No chance of them falling off on your face!

Saw two guys *attempting* to bicep curl the same bar yesterday, standing opposite each other :/

So many jokers...

Height, weight Nathan?

fair point 25GTT and I accept that you get what you pay for.

but most of these gyms that are opening up around the place arent buying quality equipment, they buy stuff on the cheaper end of the scale. This is the case with gyms like Planet Fitness and the budget gyms where they dont have many trainers to help keep costs low. at least this is the case in my area.

From what i recall Good Life, Fitness First, Virgin and Next Generation use either ABC or Hammerstrength as mentioned, the ABC dumbells are then rebranded to show "fitness first" for example on the endplate. Both of these brands are nice, personally though I prefer the Hammerstrength. There are other American and European brands that I have seen come through time to time but nothing that has really caught my eye and at the price of these two.

Based on TM7's comment that is the major thought when going through the gym manager/owners mind when purchasing the dumbells.

I tend to go with the Hammerstrength range as previously mentioned. Why? Because the actual dumbells are not individual plates on metal pole so to speak. Instead it is a large mould with a lovely black rubber finish. Long story short, the more smaller pieces the more chance they start to become lose and you have to organise your gym instructors to tighten and retighten them before they fall off. You can use locktite as much as you want, but when someone drops a 40 kilo from chest high, the loctite has no chance.

My recommendation to most gym managers is to pay the extra and get the hammerstrength.

Unfortunately though as you mention not all large gyms though get the good stuff, so lets pray they have a good legal team should something go wrong.

Anyone have any tips for building calves?

Become a truck driver :D

I used to do one legged calf raises between sets of other exercises, met with some success...calves were certainly sore by the end of it.

Alternatively you can do weighted calf raises on a machine or holding dumbells. I find the machines give me microtears in the arch because I always go too low.

I got a HD clutch does that count lawl.

Currently I'm doing calf raises with barbell on my back for 4 sets supersetted with bodyweight for each set 2x a week, 12-15 reps. Not really seeing too much size going on them though :/ Maybe because I'm still slim

    • Mate you saved be from dying in the Perth summer. AC wasn't changing direction and just going into diagnostics mode fixed it. You're a legend and I would shout you a beer if I could!
    • Unfortunately effort gone to waste, you will have substantial issues with how the manifold and wastegate have been integrated. You would be so much better off with a modified stock manifold like this: https://hypergearturbos.com/product/rb25detexgatedmanifold/   OR literally just getting a off the shelf Sinco or 6Boost manifold as myself and others have mentioned.
    • Yuck. But it's kinda the same principle, moving timing around to make car run bad but sound good.... I went for a more spirited tuning drive to iron out a few things. Car no longer stalls, and it loved to dip RPM low when you clutch in. After tuning this (and the 4-5 tables that HPTuners/LS1 OEM ECU wants for idle air correction) it's now behaving somewhat normal. All expected because there's a new TB, new Intake manifold and that new TB which is 102mm vs 78... has an entirely different IAC passage which is smaller because ????? Unfortunately at this point I went to make further fine tuning changes to avoid it flaring up, you know... _tuning_ the HPTuners dongle died. Well to be more accurate - The USB cable died in a fashion that anyone who has ever charged a phone will recognize. After the app demanding I resync it 50 or so times (which all 'succeeded' but all failed) the device does not want to sync and I've logged a ticket with support to see if it's fixable. US Support said it was a 'storage issue' but after removing the SD card inside it and formatting it/fixing it the issue does persist. Unfortunately usually the fix is "Turn in your old dongle and pay $700 for the upgraded one" it's cheaper because I get some free licence credits I unfortunately don't need. However I'm 10 minutes down the road from HP Tuners AUS/VCM so at least I won't need to post it, and logged a new ticket for support over here. Definitely drives different. My SOTP dyno believes it's probably making 310-320kw instead of the 280 before.  It scrambles for traction a little now whereas it previously different. It drives like a bigger cam car up top even though the cam is smaller, likely due to the cam not being advanced 6 degrees. The timing is deliberately low and the fuel is very rich so who knows if this will improve on the dyno. It may, imperceptably. Also funny is removing the pineapples definitely makes the car squat more and axle tramp less. So this behavior of having more top end, squatting more, and scrabbling for traction more makes me think = more power. But I could have just been sitting on the threshold of that kind of behavior before. Time will tell if my butt dyno is calibrated right. I need the exhaust leaks fixed before dyno tune for obvious AFR related reasons - I repositioned the pipes but I'm not confident it's fully sealed even if it is better. At least the car does drive around while I cannot tweak/tune it for now. And I have aircon again. medium success!
    • Don't use that manifold. Please don't use that manifold. Sunk cost fallacy is not worth the later pain. None of these will be relevant to the change that will come from the different turbo and manifold. As in, the effect of the exhaust will be nil, regardless of what else is changed. And all the cam and fuel system stuff is not changing either way, so has no effect. The turbo and manifold (and to a small extent the wastegate)....big change.
