Speaking of food.

Who's made the transition from protein shakes to purely whole foods?

The idea of long term consumption of protein shakes doesn't sit well with me and I'm a minimal user as it is (post work out and the morning after only).

I count protein powder as food as that is what it is. I can handle the artificial sweetener in a shake form, but I really cannot stand it (even stevia) in a food product. Thinking of trying a mass gainer for morning oats as it may be more palatable

Would really like to hear your reasoning here.

Personally I haven't purposely switched over, but I'm finding that I'm getting enough protein from my food intake not to really need the supplementation lately. Still like the idea of a WPI shake immediately post-workout, but otherwise I'll only bother with them if I miss a meal and end up behind.

Why not put some honey in your oats then? Mass gainer is just more carbs, which is exactly what you're getting by putting some honey in there.

Where the hell did logic go on SAU today? lol

As an example of many bits of text around, take a look at this.

I'm not saying protien shakes are bad, but just that in general, whole foods tend to be a healthier choose for a number of reasons.

I love the idea of a quick post workout smash it in shake to get everything, but I have no idea what else is in that shake.

Pardon the pun but it's just food for thought. I will never be a calorie counter zomg must eat my specific protien meals through the day kind of guy, I like a post workout as I recover better and my loads are not heavy enough to really require ultra concentration on my nutrition, my choices are healthy enough that I'm in good enough shape without that level of scrutiny (but again my goals and loads are low).

I've always thought I will be consuming protein shakes for as long as I'm weight training, because as you know I find it difficult to obtain the required amount of protein from food alone.

edit: dan just saw you posted above me

I'm not directly saying that Leesh.

"I'm not saying protien shakes are bad, but just that in general, whole foods tend to be a healthier choose for a number of reasons."

And I will point out that this is an assumption on my part.

I know I am happier and heathier when I eat more whole foods than processed ones irrespective of protien, so I'm thinking about whether I can/should eliminate the protein shake entirely and just have a post workout smoothie with fruit and berries and yoghurt etc.

Think you are missing the point here - honey does not contain any protein, mass gainer does as well as the sugar based carbs. I probably won't as I'm already buying enough supplements as it is.

ActionDan : from my own researching, I've found with a lot of these things you can find a study to support almost any point of view - the only real way to divine results is to look at an extract of the original study cited, and seeing what the controls were for the experiment (i.e. one about WPI vs Casein was done on people who had fasted for 14 hours!), also whether the results gained were causative or correlative (as a conclusion can be implied into that).

This is true, 1 tablespoon of honey contains 17g of carbs, 1g of sodium and 17g of sugar. I was putting it on my oats until I found that out.

lol yep completely missed the point :( I was focussing on the taste problem and forgot all about the lack of protein problem....why not just have the protein powder separately to the oats then? Bowl of oats with some honey and/or dried fruit, and a shake with water.

That I could do - at the moment it's 1/3 cup oats with a little bit of maple syrup, then a can of tuna at 9-9.30 but it's getting a bit cold lately for tuna to be all that appetizing at that time of the morning! Finding habitual eating at night a bit of a struggle still, but staying under 2300 calories a day nearly every day.

Queen sugar free maple syrup. In my relatively limited experience with maple syrup (always went golden syrup instead :D), it tastes exactly the same. Doesn't have the usual acesulfame potassium or aspartame for sweeteners, instead using sucralose (yeah yeah, still artificial).

Give it a shot imo, it's what I've been using in my oats and on weet bix. Worst case is you don't like it, and you only lost like $3.

if you have 500ml of milk and the oats, you'll be getting around 20-30g of protein.

    • The car revs up through the gears much better/faster now, and fuel consumption doesn't really seem to have be affected either on a Hwy cruise, which wasn't expected  The FAB9 intake manifold has been problematic sourcing though, I've contacted Plasmaman to ask about their intake, which you can get different runner lengths spec'd, and, their different options for throttle bodies  The only real physical drawback with the Plasmaman intake is how to connect it to my current OEM style airbox, as FAB9 make a OEM style back half of the airbox to suit the larger diameter throttle body, and all that is required is a 30°bend silicone pipe to mate the throttle body to the airbox Car also goes in for some exhaust work in a week or so to fit the biggest resonator they can fit clearance wise in the front pipe to help remove some of the drone, there isn't alot of realestate under there, a rough guesstimation is it will only be about 3-400mm long and maybe 90-100mm diameter, and with a 60mm exhaust that doesn't leave alot of space for the internal volume of the resonator to do its thing I'm thinking I may need to bin the "high flow" 100 cell cat for something a bit more substantial, yeah, and restrictive, like a 200-400 cell, to help, but, I have ample room for a really large bodied cat to replace the current one which has around a 4" diameter body I may look around in the recycling bins and see if I can find a massive newish cat that was "replaced" with some new full exhaust system that the local exhaust shop in Western Sydney is doing
    • Hahah look at that smile 😂 Just like those ones on IG where they compare the husband in family photos vs husband going fishing lol. I don't think I'll participate this time, clutch isn't in and also the last time I went there were too many numpties on the cruise sessions. Nearly caused a few accidents holding up people and a few guys initiating massive kerb to kerb drifts with heaps of cars right behind them. Not to mention, there were guys on the track session using it as a power cruise session.

    • All Jap Day is coming up again! 13th of July this year. Are you going? Tickets go on sale on Wednesday 6pm. Please let Quang know as well. https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1163155775853542   I still get shit from my wife for this photo because it is the happiest she has ever seen me. And it's not with her, it's in someone else's car.   Quang's EVO is sick, but that rotary wagon flying past was absolutely bonkers.
