Hey fellas,

I've finally decided to go get a nice set of H.I.D's for my car - was wondering how bright should I go?

I found that in general, H.I.D's come in 3 intensity levels - 6K, 8K and 10K.

Apparently:

The colour of the light source is expressed as its colour temperature. As the colour temperature increases, the colour of the light moves from blue to white. HID headlights provide light at a higher colour temperature than standard halogen headlights, which gives them a crisp white appearance. More K does not mean it is brighter. 6000K lamps provide a pure white with very little blue colour. 8000K lamps are light blue/white in colour. 10000K lamps are closest to blue with very little white colour.

I want mine to be really white - so does this mean go for the 6K, however, a few others suggested that go 8K - as it's more brighter light and with a touch of blue, it makes the car look better and night...

Your thoughts?

Thanks again fellas.

6000k look white wiht a little bit of blue tinge...so they look legal but i guess the rest is illegal cause 8000k is blue as matey but i think HIDs are illegal....u need a whole bunch of stuff to make it legal such as in this link:

hope that helps ;)

Cheers

The most light will come from 4300-5000k. Going much higher than that and you start to give up usable light for the blue/purple look.

So if you want good light then go for 4300 or 5000k, if you want rice then go for 6000-8000k. Also adding HID bulbs to normal headlights never look as good as proper factory Xenons.

I got HID's in my R34. With the stock xenon headlights they look awsum, altho not very brite at all! Well they are quite bright up to a certain point on the road and then they die, about 50m ahead you can see quite well and then theres pretty much no light from that point onwards.. quite crap really. but an awsum gaybo rice look :D:blink:

I heard (before I got my H.I.Ds(I sell them now)) that 10000k was pretty blue.

For some fun, I ordered extra bulbs (15000k was the highest I got - the highest I can get hold of is 30000k)

After playing around with all of them I can say that even the 15000k bulbs are not really blue.

Furthermore, no HIDs are going to give you 'pure' blue headlights[they wouldn't be any use while driving anyway]

They do go up in strength all the way to ultraviolet, but bear in mind that the transition is slow

There is not a lot of visual colour difference between the 6000k and 10000k, the 10000k appear brighter (they are) but they don't project as far on the road.

6000k are probably your best bet, since they remain useful (better than halogens!!) and are a nice clean white.

Be careful though, because some police don't like them

I told Spunky to go for 6000k MAX. Never go above that unless he wants lots of attention on the road which includes the police.

All sorts of HID's are illegal unless your car had it as an option or you had them engineered with cleaners, level adjusters, etc.

The brightest temperature is 4300k, it's the same colour as our natural light from the sun. It's white. As you go cooler (4000k), it gets yellow. As you get higher (6000k), it goes blue. For the best light output, go for 4300k. Anymore and you're looking at rice.

If you're planning on putting these in the R33's reflector housing, you're gonna blind everyone on and around the road.

I highly recommend you stay with the standard halogen style globes. Your headlights were designed to use halogens.

  • 2 weeks later...

i got Super Vison HID in my r33... HID are legal only if you get 6000k. I used to have 10 000k but got picked on too much for being too blue. So swapped them out for 6000k and ive never been picked on again...

Bulbs should last around 3-4 times longer then the normal one and they actually use less power ! (35 watts compared to 60 odd wats for normal ones)!! You can get china made ones off ebay for only 150 bucks. ...

I recommend you go for 6000k as changing them out all the time is annoying! once you have HID.. u will never want to go back! :P

the 6000k thing isnt true. ADRs say they need to be self leveling and have some sort of cleaning wiper? nothing to do with the k of them

What this guy's saying is correct. It doesn't matter if they're 6000k or 8000k globes, they're illegal unless you've got those cleaners and adjusters from factory.

all the new cars being sold today have blue looking light, talk about double standards

The blue light isn't from the globes themselves. The blue is created by the projector's refracting the light into it's separate speeds and blue just happens to be the only one most wanted (you can play around with the projector's shield and you can get red light). Headlights which have HID's from factory will always have a globe around the 4300k mark.

I had 8000k in my car and was promptly defected for them.IMO HIDs dont work very well with reflector style headlights.Too many hot and cold spots, not to mention on coming traffic getting blinded.

All types of HIDs are illegal except for cars equipped with self leveling and a cleaning system fitted.

If you are going to get HIDs i would recommend 4300k-6000k.8000k is too blue.

    • Let's hope that's not a copy pump either. There were so many copies of them back in the day.
    • Damn it, I was at work last night, and stayed in a room there during the storm with the car outside, but undercover, I just went downstairs and well....there was a large steel locker that has come from some place last night, it wasn't anywhere I could see yesterday, and yeap, it landed on the fraking car....of course it did..... LOL So, I'll need to take it back for paint and panel, luckily it was only the boot that took the hit, so it could have been worse Serves me right for staying at work and getting on the cans with some of the boys
    • Yeah, really happy with how it all turned out As for aftermarket lip, nah, I'm not really a fan for practically reasons on a street car that gets driven everywhere  I did have the full lower kit on my 2015 STI, but found the front lip scrapped alot, even at stock 4x4ish ride height As the NC sits now, with the lowest point of the car at 110mm, so just legal, some steep driveways and steep speed humps will still "just" scrap those little plastic OEM air dam thingies on the undertray just before the front wheels
    • Here's one I help build and tuned a decade ago, Garrett  GTX3071R Gen 1, T3 twin scroll 0.83 rear housing. Went from larger 272 cams down to smaller Tomei Poncams to help with the low end. S13 non VCT motor. Car was purpose built for the track, hence low down was the focus. Note the actual dyno chart shows lower boost, however the EBC and boost gauge showed 1.9Bar (Ignore the torque, I was young and didn't know how to set derived torque)
    • I’m doing some side developments on SR20det S13 engines, its one my hobby cars used it to compare flow capacity of some smaller size wheels. SR20det is one of another JDM legendary engines I'm sure there are plenty of SR enthusiasts on this forum, I will share results some common turbo configurations here. a quick run down of what the car is: Wide body 180sx Type X with black top engine (blue). It has: Stock bottom end Haltech 1500 ECU 5-0 motorsports trigger kit Kelford SR20DET Beehive Spring with Titanium Retainers Kelford Cams SR20DET S13 188-B 268/272 Cams G25-660 Turbocharger in T2 .64 rear housing internally gated ARP Head studs MLS head gasket 1000CC ID injectors Walbro 450L Fuel pump Front mount cooler kit JJR’s 3 inches turbo back exhaust (its too short for the 180sx it had to be extended) Pump 98 fuel Hub Dyno tune So far made 270rwkws at 22psi full boost by 4500RPM. Engine is very knock limited hence a pretty bad looking top end. From previous experiences it seems like SR20dets are happier with bigger size turbine, some thing like a GT30 would make way better top end, but on same time response is lost. It won't be a problem with S15 VCT engines. I'll be testing alternative turbine housing, turbine wheel and possibly dump pipe options for extra flow to resolve the problem and of course E85 would resolve all the issues.
