Hey guys

I'm pretty sure most of you have a pod filter or 2,

my question is what do you guys do to make sure that cold air is sucked into it

instead of the hot air from the engine bay. Do you use a cold air box?

Thanks

good question. i too am interested in this. as is the case with mine, id say most pods are mounted well clear of the engine and forward of it, so given the air flow across the engine, the hot air should be predominantly towards the rear. i have often heard the term cold air filter though, interested to know what it means exactly.

CAI means cold air induction. most srock airboxes will have some sort of cai, by drawing air from in the bumper/guard area. as soon as you replace this with a pod, all the air is being taken from inside the engine bay.

there are a few ways to combat the problem.

one is extend the piping down into the bumper, or guard area, and have the pod down there.

another is to build a box around the pod, with piping extending down into the colder area.

another thing ive also sen people do is modify the stock airbox, by gutting it, and mounting a pod filter inside, and then running an intake pipe from teh airbox down the front further. this way it looks nice and stock..

True that!

In other words a heat shroud.

Here is one on a S15 Sliva

And if ya look closely there are 2 tubing pipes to feed air to the pod.

Alright I aint gonna pay $80-$100 4 two stupid pieces of heat shields,

so I went to Clark Rubber and bought myself 1 square metre of heat shield reflecting material (it's flexible too which is good)

they cost around $20 a square metre and you can pretty much make 4 heat shields with that

anyway here's some pictures, just simply cut to size and fitted it on,

only the shiny side is heat resistant ... shouldn't take more than an hour

this sounds like a great idea, cheaper too.. you should add it to the DIY Section aswell of the forum.. im gonna give it a go tomorrow..

UAS have a fibreglass CAI box for r33s and r34s, but they cost quite a bit.

r34s for 195 bucks!

im thinking of going back to the stock airbox with the stock snorkel + ill run a pipe down to the front bar.

ohh and POLICE thats a very nice idea man!

i bought that exact same foam with the metalic side from clark rubber :)

made up an air box with it and it keeps a lot of the hot air away from my pod.

+1 for clark rubber!

did it today took me about half an hour

$9 for the material ;)

omg I got ripped $11  lol

i only purchased half a metre, 1mtre cost $18~

on another note, the material was much softer than i expected. Might put a wire frame under the material, as the foam will no doubt get sucked on full boost etc

ebay USA has them for around $100 from memory.

BTW the cold air box is really only needed in stop/start traffic or drags. If your travelling down the highway or doing circuit work I'd say the air flow would be sufficient to remove any hot air build up.
