I found this photo whilst searching on a Japanese site.

The japlish to go with it...

"Designed to be symmetrical with the main engine. Toward the bottom left is the air-cooled oil cooler. Rainer scrap iron, aluminum is employed by the boa.

Anyone know why they used two intercoolers, rather than one large one (thus giving it a larger surface area)?

Because it makes the plumbing simpler & the cooling from the intercoolers is the same for each bank of the motor.

Notice the interccolers are mounted sideways....

^^^ yep what he said ----- remember, simple piping is also a key factor in efficient cooling.

looks like it would be a bitch to change the alternator in the car!

hopefully it's not to bad from under neath,

Just like any gtr a bitch to work on that said everything looks tight to work on and around at least its not as bad as 300zx engine out to change the filter lol

yeah oil cooler on the left.

only thing i find interesting, is that you'd think that having the intercoolers like that would slow the intake air speed down a bit compared to a fmic type cooler, as the air travels into the cooler then has to do 2 90 degree turns before it exits.
