Hi All,

I recently imported an R33 GTR V-Spec (1995.) I was aware when i purchased the car from the broker that it had the standard airbag wheel replaced with an aftermarket Nismo one.

During compliance it was all good, borrowed a wheel and got over the pits fine. But now i have to return the airbag wheel and go back to the nismo one. This raises a couple of issues for me:

a) It is a yellow if and when the police pull me over for my "routine licence check" -and -

b) My wife drives the car so i would prefer it to be safe.

This means that i want to convert BACK to an airbag wheel. I have done heaps of searches but have found no firm answers on this topic.

Does anybody know if you can put any other car's airbag wheel on? For example i like S15 steering wheels a whole lot more than R33 GTR stock steering wheels or even R34 steering wheels, so i would love to know if they can be substituted? Any steering wheel that has an airbag and is going to work on a 33 GTR would be worth knowing about.

Does anyone know if the airbag warning light has to work to do the airbag computer check that i found in another thread? I think mine may have been disconnected as it has never worked (as in light up, even when it had the airbag wheel on.) I would like to run a diagnostic on it before i buy a new steering wheel just incase the car has been in a bingle and the sensor needs to be replaced too.

This is an excerpt from the thread that i am referring to:

THIS IS HOW TO RESET THE AIRBAG COMPUTER

First you have to put the system into the diagnostic mode. Here's how to do this:

From User Mode To Diagnosis Mode:

Diagnosis Mode activates only when a malfunction is detected, by pressing the driver's door switch at least 5 times within 7 seconds after turning the ignition "ON". SRS will not enter Diagnosis Mode if no malfunction is detected.

From Diagnosis Mode to User Mode:

After a malfunction is repaired, switch the ignition "OFF" for at least 1 second , then back "ON". Diagnosis Mode returns to User Mode. If switching Diagnosis Mode to User Mode is required while malfunction is being detected, switch the ignition "OFF", then back "ON" and press the driver's door switch at least 5 times within 7 seconds.

After a malfunction is repaired, return to User Mode from Diagnosis Mode by switching the ignition "OFF" for at least 1 second, then back "ON". At that time, the problem code is cleared

Any help or advice will be gratefully accepted

PS sorry if there is a thread that covers this, i searched heaps of times but was unabelt o find one!!! :)

ah that was from my old thread .. umm for starters the yellow airbag plug may be different, i dont have pinouts unfortinatly, and you can also reset airbag with nissandatascan software which will alow you to check it and reset it without the need for the airbag light, the airbag light is just an indicator, it will flash up error codes when put in diagnostic mode, so the software way might be the way to go .. I can take a picture of the airbag steering wheel plug from my old R33 GTST steering wheel if you like ..

Check out the R33 GTR S2/S3 steering wheels, nicer than the S1 wheels. They fit and work.

Don't think the R34 GTR airbag will work with the R33 GTR, but i could be wrong. S15 i have no idea.

Most people just pull the bulb out of the speedo cluster. Pull out your cluster, and check the bulb. If it doesn't have one, plug one in, if it does check to make sure it's not blown, if it's not blown then I dunno sorry :(

Thanks Mick and Ferni,

I appreciate your help and advice. I will definitely consider the series 2 and 3 airbag wheels as soon as i establish what it is i need to make the airbag work again!

I am going to be pulling the dash apart next weekend to try and get the light working so i can run the diagnostics. If that fails i will certainly be hooking the car up to consult!

Thanks again for taking the time to post!

Have great Aus Days

    • Good morning all, Bit of a random question but figured I’d finally throw it out after wondering for a long while. Before I start, I'm hoping to do this purely out of personal preference. I think it would look better at night, and don't mind at all spending a few hours and dollars to get it done. I've copied this from a non-Skyline specific forum, so I apologize for the explanation of our headlight switch setup that we all know. Here we go: Zero lights (switch off) Parking lights (switch position 1) being a rectangular marker on the outside of the housing, my low beam being the projector in the centre (position 2), and a high beam triggered by my turn signal stalk. Most North American cars I’ve owned of this era have power to the amber corner (turning indicator) light as part of the first switch (parking lights). I’d love to have these amber corners receive power when the headlights and parking lights are on (headlight switch), yet still blink when using the turn signal which is of course a separate switch. Hopefully I’ve explained my question correctly. Is anyone aware of a way in which I might be able to achieve this? Thanks in advance
    • My heads are cathedral port! It's likely possible, but I don't want to add any extra moving parts (I know they don't move) between the heads, manifolds, etc. It will also affect how injectors/fuel rails etc sit and I don't really know if it would change how the FAST manifold goes/sits/fits. I have the LS6 steam pipes already as I have a very late LS1 block so it should be fine. I couldn't find anyone who had ever actually used one for this purpose, it seems 100% of people grind the water pump. The thermal spacers are 12mm and are half way to the cost of the newer water pump anyhow... so if it comes to that I suppose I'd rather buy a new pump. The bearing in the pump I do have is a little.. clunky, but it hasn't done that much time and I never noticed it when the car was together in the past few years, so..
    • The bushing has failed, not all that uncommon for a car of this age.  Any mechanic should be able to push in a new bushing for you, or you can probably buy the entire lower control arm, complete with bushes.
    • Could you not use "thermal" spacers to give the clearance, like the ones I used between the blower and head? That raised the manifold height by around 10-15mm Albeit the ones I used were for cathedral ports, but I assume they have similar for rectangular ports????
    • Thanks Paul I reached out to Autotainment but they no longer work on JDM cars as the guy who used to do the work moved on and is no longer doing that kind of work. I am talking with Level Up Audio though.
