ok, i've done the research and tried what people have recommended to me

the car (1996 R33 GTS SII) has been serviced every 5000km since i've owned it except for missing an oil change

NOW my question is, over the last two weeks i've put in a new set of NGK iridium plugs, i've replaced the air filter and fuel filter, and i've run a full tank of BP ultimate with injector cleaner... WHY IN GOD'S NAME IS IT PINGING LIKE MY DAD'S 1982 FORD LASER?

is there something i've missed? does it just need a tune by someone who knows their shit?

a bit of information on how i drive it in case it helps...

it's my daily, but i give it hell every now and then, also, the mrs drives it and changes gears at around 2400rpm but she's learning slowly lol

it pings under load in the lower rev range (anywhere under about 3500rpm) which sucks ass working on bell st, preston.

it'll still hit 100km/h in 2nd gear, but it takes around 8 seconds to do it.

this is not right... does anyone have any ideas about what's wrong with my baby?

maybe get the timing put back, nearly 99% of the time my car has pinged, it cause of the timing............other than that maybe use octane booster ( a good quality one - such as Justice Brothers Octane Bootser)

the timing was the only other thing i could think of, but why would it suddenly start up on a car that has been properly maintained and serviced?

beyond that, i run it on 98 octane fuel every time i fill up, 95 if i'm really in a pinch, but that should be easily enough to not be the cause of my problem

it's due for a service in the next week or two anyway so it's getting one whether i like it or not and if it doesn't clear itself up within the next few days (new fuel filter and all) hopefully the guys at the shop will be able to fix her up for me. i hate to hear an RB sounding like that, especially my own

any recommendations on decent mechanics in eastern melb?

i bought the car at kamikaze motors, and have been getting it serviced at their affiliate workshop down the road, sumo performance or something like that, but they seem a little cheap, and i've never noticed much of a difference between taking the car in and getting it back.

beyond that, i'm beginning to think the problem is a little more serious. today, while sitting in traffic, it stalled for no reason. not in gear, not moving, just dropped revs a little when the climate control kicked in, then choked and died. it took a couple of tries to get it to start again, and now i have less power than before i replaced the plugs and fuel filter, it chokes unless i'm flooring it, and it's louder. i have this horrible feeling something has gone pop. please dear god tell me i haven't blown the head

lol yeah the fuel filter and the air filter are fitted properly, they have this lovely little stamp on them that says "in" and "out". i'm thinking it would be pretty hard to f**k that up. i got the car serviced over the weekend at sumo performance and they replaced my $130 iridium plugs with a set of basic NGK plugs worth about $50 stating "oh we've found that the shit plugs are better than the good ones". they were nice enough not to charge me for them because, surprise surprise, they didn't fix the problem AND THEY COULDN'T BE ARSED TAKING THEM OUT AGAIN, but still.

anyway, the misfire is gone after a big ass service, but it still idles badly from starting up until i've driven for 5-10 mins. this doesn't really phase me as much but it's still a bit irritating. also, i have less power now. it's equal through the whole rev range (about 2k all the way to 8) could this be because of the shit plugs?

    • All I can say Duncan is good luck and I hope that Neil did not run any E85 in Cheryl. I have recently experienced the full spectrum of fuel tank issues in my R33's that had been caused by E85 and contaminated fuel. When you take the cover off the top of the tank and have a look inside you will get an understanding of how easy it will be. Best case situation is clean fuel with minimal contamination. My GTR was like this and it was a very simple operation to just grab the fuel pump carrier bracket and slide it up and out of the tank. My three GTS_T's had different levels of fuel contamination that was probably caused by E85 in the fuel.  In the worst case all of the metal components in the tank had rusted to the point where there were pieces of rusted metal swirling around in the tank. This required the removal of the exhaust, the tailshaft, the complete rear cradle and the fuel tank. The components in the tank were that rusted that it took days to get the fuel pump carrier and the mounting brackets out of the tank. When the tank was finally cleaned, everything inside the tank had to be replaced. With the tank all back together I could then reinstall it in the car along with everything else that had to come out. Good luck and I hope that you find a clean tank.
    • It is a two door. It is black and also still has the OEM wheels and stereo. Exact model would be KR_R32RGFEL_SS According to GTR-Registry.com is a 2 Door Coupe; RB20DE; 2WD no HICAS; MT.F5; (11L) Projector Headlamps and Fog Lights; (12_) Electronic Active Full Auto Air Con (Climate Control); (13-14SS) V Selection -- Which seems to be accurate description of my variant. Will try to upload a few pictures soon. The OEM wheels look like the below image. Image is taken from the goo-net-exchange website.
