Timing Belt Cover

i seem to see many high powered built skylines (many of them show ponies) with no timing belt covers

is it safe to run without a cover? or is this just asking for troubles?

Prollly asking for troubles. That said, if you have the OEM stone tray underneath, you'd have to be pretty unlucky for something to go through the belt / teeth.

In these circumstances, i always imagine what i would think if the worst case scenario occurred... I'd kick myself.

Id leave it on.

Asking for trouble mate. Anything that falls at the front of the motor will end up behind the harmonic balancer. If you leave it there it will destroy your timing belt and then engine. If you notice something falling there it is balancer off to retreive it.

They get left off because it either looks good, or because it makes it easier to adjust cam gears.

I cannot see any reason to leave the cover off unless you were having the car tuned on the dyno and needed to adjust the cam gears as part of the tune. After that I would always have a cover on. If it is a look thing that you are after they now make clear covers for RB26 and RB25 motors.

I have first hand experience with the type of problems that can occur with an open motor. I once dropped a 6 mm bolt down past the timing chain in a Mazda engine. After much effort we finally got it to fall all the way through and into the sump to allow me to retrieve it by removing the sump. This took TWO WHOLE DAYS to get the bolt out and an unbelieveable amount of frustration along the way.

They ain't so great either. Most installed in cars that actually get driven seem to go a little opaque and removing it to clean all the dust n shit off the inside is ridiculous imo
