Hey guys my brother was driving to work the other morning, all of a sudden bang steam/smoke everywhere, popped the hood found cooling flowing all over the top of the gearbox...Got it towed home, I had a look at it and found that the 2 welch plugs at the back of the head (on the passenger side) have fallen/rusted out.

Just wondering if anyone knows the sizes of these so I can get new ones from repco or something.

I dont have anything to measure the holes with, also had a quick search on here and couldnt find anything

Thanks for your help.

no idea how you could see those welsh plugs with the engine in? you mean rear of the engine or turbo side of the engine? much more common for it to be a dead heater hose back there.

if it is a welsh plug, is there some sort of blockage or pressure problem in your cooling system? what pressure radiator cap do you run? did it get hot?

anyway all welsh plugs are either 22mm or 30mm plugs depending on which one you are after, easy to find locally

Thanks for the info mate.

When we got it home I got my brother to keep pouring water into the radiator and saw it come out behind the head onto the gearbox, I stuck my hand around the back and I could feel the hole where the water was coming out (turbo side of the head)

Hopefully go get some plugs today and see what I can do, probably going to be a head off/engine out job.

welsh plugs are either 22mm or 30mm???

i work @ an engine reco shop... we have welsh plugs from 10mm to over 50mm.. and they are all used.

dont talk nonsense about shit u dont know. It could be ANY size. it pays to measure the hole or ask ur local engine shop.

Yes that is true... but its because it frustrates me how ppl with no knowledge on any subject can just give out info..

If u dont know, then dont post.. dont waste the persons time by going down a path thats not the right one.

Im sorry

Tis what forums are about... for better or for worse

Tis up to people to spend the time, collate similar answers and make up their own minds.

Assume he means all used in RB's :)

bumblebee, please point out to me a welsh plug on an rb motor that is not 22 or 30mm, otherwise settle down. most recent time I bolted one of these together was today and they are the only 2 sizes used, and both sizes are use at the rear of the head and block so I can't be more specific.

BTW if the leak is turbo side of the block not back of the block (no welsh plugs in the rear of the block, but there are a couple in the rear of the head), you will find it easier to see from underneath. If you take the front pipes off you might be able to see the missing plug.

    • This could be sold and shipped to the US for many gold pieces. RMS has no say in that. Ask various Western Sydney inhabitants how it works.
    • Ha ha ha, mine loves to spend, all on the dogs (they're our kids, and her spending would likely rival that of some people raising children!) the only benefit is, her spending is tax deductible as she runs a business in the dog industry 😛 The above all means she can spend race car budget quicker than I can. 😛 That and a lot of the things I want are very expensive, and I can be a bit "you want how much for that?!" And at other times overly impulsive. Or I start the w days of research, get to day 1.5 and get really annoyed that no one will advertise actual specifics and it's just marketting BS and I go "well, now I don't want anything to do with that now!" Also I hate paying lots of money for something I can make from $50 in materials. Then I get the shits halfway through making things and wonder why others who just buy parts have more fun... 😛
    • Their 240Z with the RB26 would be a real nice thing to have in a garage to come out for an occasional weekend cruise It's such a cool thing in so many ways Sadly, we have a blue 240Z shell that I walk past every day, just sitting outside a shed at work, it has been slowly disintegrating and falling apart into the ground for the last few years, the owner cannot be found, and I am unable to "claim it" I've been told by work and the RMS, the rust in the body is excessive though, and it has had most of the salvageable stuff, like panels, trim and switch gear stripped off it over the last year or two, work keeps threatening to put it in one of our metal scrap bins, I wish they did though, as it makes Mark sad walking past it
    • Good tips, I like it! 😂😂 My wife is a LOT more frugal than me so it's only me we need to worry about! A splurge to her is buying 2 pairs of socks in one visit at Kmart!
    • Haha, the appropriate response to the question "Is this new?" is "I've had this for a while.". With the unspoken small print that a while may be the time since this morning or five years ago   And to be fair I learned that from the best, i.e. my wife. Because it goes both ways.
