You pay the asking price of the plates and they are signed over to you. Then depending how much rego is left on the plate and on your car it is balanced out. i.e. 12 months rego on plates and 4 months rego on car you would get a refund of 8 months worth of rego on the plates and then the plates are at the same stage as your car. If its the other way round the you would have to pay the excess (8 manths). You can only sell custom plates in nsw i.e. SICONE or R33GTR etc not AOB.786 etc. It goes somthing like that anyway. I myself have R33GTR plates with 11 months rego on them for sale. Hope this helps.
