Hey guys.

I am going to buy a skyline hopefully in the next coming month or two. As i have a probationary licence, i am unable to drive high powered vehicles. So i have opted between an R32 GTS-T or an R33 GTS. These are the two that fit in with the power weight ratio. I would be looking at a stock R32 GTS-T or no more than a lightly modded GTS R33.

As most of you would probably know, the R32 GTS-T packs 160kw stock at the flywheel. The R33 GTS only 98kw. I can always to the GTS up and it's newer than the R32. I have only driven/been in the R33 and never driven an R32 but all in all it's a nicer car i beleive, Just older.

I have a friend who is selling his 1995 R33 GTS and has reserved it for me, very cheap, good km's, needs little work and allready has some decent mods. It's either this, or a R32. I don't have a friend with an R32 but they are relatively easy to find.

I do want a car with some nice grunt, doable in the R33 and already present in the R32.

I'm also lookinng at the R34 GTS now, they're newer, but it looks kind of "cheap" compared to the R33 if you catch my drift, they're also more expensive. Looks better from the back than the R33, but i like the front and sides of the R33 better. Personally i think it's one of the greatest body shapes ever.

I've been steering away from the R32, because of they're age mainly. Whatever power they have i can get by chucking a decent turbo on the R33 GTS.

What do you guys think? any help would be much appreciated as well as listing some opinions or thaughts you have. As i'm seriously in a pickle to which one to buy lol. What better place to ask then the skylines forum!

Interior pix of R32 GTS-T would also be much appreciated!

Cheers guys!

What's wrong with the rx7?

Anyway, go for the R32, if you go for the NA R33, you'll end up regretting it in my opinion. You'll get sick of the power pretty quick and you would've thought why you didn't go for the turbo R32.

Of course the NA R33 or the corolla would be the safer option though.

I was going to turbo the R33 anyway, possibly beyond the power/weight ratio. Then when pulled over by the police the computer tells them it's not over the P/W ratio...Allthough turbocharging it might not go well with insurance...something i might look up on.

The Rx-7? It's just not a skyline :) thats all, and mods for rotary engines (maybe it's just me) seem limited and expensive. It's done a few km's too. I have a buyer lined up but i'm not selling it 'till i get a new car.

I'm going to copy paste that last but into my first post heh.

Cheers for the input guys!

I though P platers couldn't drive any turbocharged cars?

I can, because i obtained my licence prior to June 2007. Which means i can drive turbocharged vehicles as long as they are under the P/W ratio.

Oh how i hate the P/W ratio.

What they should do is; let P'platers buy their own high powered cars, perhaps after a year of driving, then if they lose/get their licence suspended for whatever reason then they cannot drive high powered vehicles, then we'd all be hurting more because we bought the car, did it up, and now we cant drive it. This will also allow sensible drivers of high powered cars (if that makes sense) to enjoy their grunty car while not causing trouble.

But hey, I'm a P-plater, my opinion would be rather bias :)

in my personal opinion, i go the 32, the 33 failed in design, hence the face lift on the series 2, then again you are looking at paying more if u buy 33-S2. 32 goes for around the cheapest 9k private sales.

32 is a light car and the rear spoiler does not help much, so becareful, especially in the wet, practice a bit before u give it a joy ride down the street.

i just upgraded my 32 GTST to a 32 GTR V-specII, but the GTST was my first car, if u buy it stock i can guarantee you it can keep up with most sports car on the road since its only 1.3?? tonne. if you are not gonna go crazy mods, all you need to do is get the exhaust done, turbo back, maybe a larger radiator. the 32 gtst has a small intercooler on the left side, so it should be ok if u don't do any crazy mods.

good luck.

Drive both cars, check insurance then make your decision.

As a P plater with limited experience if I was you I'd do some driver training before I got into a high performance vehicle.

Turbocharging the GTS might be a bitch, it will probably be cheaper to wait until your not P plated and upgrade to a GTS25T

Good idea, I'm not that keen on the R32 though because of it's age, but you are right it is a very quick car. The money i'd save buying my friends R33 would give me enough left over for say a new paint job and a turbo...I'm not going to do it myself if thats what you meant about difficulties.

I'd like to do up the GTS myself, make it my own car with mods of my choice exc. I've spoken to a mechanic, and he's told me there's a lot of choice when turbocharging an R33 GTS, as with the R32 would be a lot more difficult..but i wouldn't touch the R32 as it's allready gutsy enough.

the Series 2 R32 is also heavier which makes it P-Plate legal.

1988-1991 r32's have less weight and are over the p:w ratio

The turbo kit on the r33 gts sounds like a hassle and a waste of cash, esp when r33 gtst's are already around the low teens.

Dont base your decision on skylines on their age/km's, more so on their condition and how well they have been maintained.

how many ppl have been in/driven r33 non turbo's????

wat 1/4 times do they run, i been in 1 and found to be hell slow.........

my bro has a r33 gts, stock with exhaust and cold air, pulled a 14.6 at kwinana motorplex on street tyres. Its a bloody freak, noone really beleives it stock but it is haha

most of the time, they are in the mid to low 15s bracket

they feel slow maily because they are n/a and lack that on boost rush that turbo cars generally give. If you keep the rb25de in the happy zone ie 5000-7000rpm they tend to be ok

Cheers for the help mate.

I checked the PW ratio for the R32 GTS-T and it just fits in according to the vicroads calculator.

I appreciate the input man, but i'm looking now more towards an R33 or R34, I like the looks better and i like newer cars. I'm not going to do engine mods myself, and i've always been keen on getting an N/A car and turbocharging it as well as making my own selective mods, even if it costs more. In other words, i want to get a decent car and make it into a great car by getting it modded!

I'm almost tempted to go to hell with the P/W ratio and buy a R33 GTR-S anyway!

    • Honda's hybrid system can be easily scaled up to PHEVs. Series hybrid at low speeds, at higher speeds the engine directly drives the wheels but there can still be some power bled off to charge the battery + the electric motor can still provide parallel assistance too. It's really only a question of will at that point. Toyota's PHEVs are selling incredibly well at the moment because of the flexibility. You can run on EV mode when it makes sense, but if you're planning on doing a long highway drive you can still fire up the gas engine and not have to worry about dealing with the rather miserable state of public charging infrastructure.
    • Only reason to keep a MAF on your RB25 is to be able to easily calculate true VE if you know what the factory voltage curve represents in grams per second of flow. Also allows you to do things like pull the original OEM ignition + AFR target tables and use those as a starting point for your base map. Once you're well and truly done tuning though there's no need to retain the MAF.
    • Do you think they'll merge there performance divisions and we'll end up HoMo?
    • Very true, if buying new, I would not get an PP either. Minimum is an Elite 2500, which is also considered outdated. Get something that supports DBW, delete that cable throttle. Best thing I've ever done to the Skyline, next best is refreshing the A/C with a new condenser. It's cold, but not as cold as modern car, but colder than most 90s JDM shit boxes imported into Australia.
    • Haltech have a nice comparison table between the Elite and Nexus models -  https://www.haltech.com/ecu-buyers-guide/ In general, the Nexus is better. Haltech have some nice product videos on their YouTube page, I'd have a look at those and if you're still not confident what way to go, I'd give them a call. They have the best customer support of any company I've dealt with, I'm sure they'll be able to help you out.
