usually the oil pressure guage gets a signal from either an electronic sensor ( like a diaphram ) or its a T peice that you splice into the oil lines. So from what I understand you get an oil line - cut it - insert the T junction - attach the sensor and run the wire ( or the physical line containing oil ) to the guage.

the std "idiot" oil light is on-off only. You won't be able to get a regular pressure gauge to take a reading from it. The gauge should have come with a sender as well. As Sean stated, you will need to locate a pressure line as close to the pump as possible and splice the sender unit in.

Your oil pressure gauge should have come with an oil pressure sender unit, which is what sends the info to the gauge. As Dale said, the switch connected to the oil pressure light is an on/off one only.

The best thing to do is either:

  • buy an adaptor plate (like this Nismo one, but there are cheaper alternatives) which goes between the oil filter and the block, which is what you screw your sender into; or
  • buy an oil filter relocation kit (like this Stagea-specific kit from Trust GReddy), which includes the adaptor plate and also moves your oil filter up near your battery, making it a lot easier to change when you do your servicing.

Im up for doing this as we speak. Not only an oil pressure gauge but also an oil temp gauge. I had thought about putting a female cross piece to the block where the present sender is for the OP light. Use a male nipple to get connection to the block

then fit the necessary senders to the other three parts of the cross piece.

I'm not sure of the amount of room available, but if it is there it will be less expensive than the GReddy thingo.

Hugh, if you can find a cheap adaptor plate, you should have the space to run both the oil pressure and the oil temperature gauge off the one adaptor. The Nismo adaptor plate is $995 from JustJap on it's own(!!!), so some hunting around should find you a similar unit for a lot cheaper.

I figured that the GReddy kit was worth it for the price (around $190 delivered from Nengun), especially since it makes oil filter changes a lot easier, and the hoses supplied are good quality Earls ones with braided sheaths to go over them to look neater. I fitted one of the senders to the adaptor plate at the block, and the other sensor to where the oil filter attaches (can't remember which way around I did it, though).
