Hey all, have done an R33 GTS Auto to RB25DET and manual gearbox, my question is with the brakes. I have to upgrade to GTST brakes, but to get it legally engineered do I need to go to the 5 stud bolt pattern or will the 4 stud suffice as long as calipers are changed?

Calipers cant be changed without hubs, the bolt holes don't match up i believe.

Also disks wont match the calipers width.

So you need hubs with 5 studs to fit those calipers. Its not the worlds hardest job, as long as you have a breaker bar of some description. ie gal pipe.

it is my understanding that if a certain engine was offered in the same body from the factory then you dont need an engineers report.... IE 6cyl->350 chev in a HT kingswood or say changing a deisel gemini to a 2l gasoline engine its not required....so i cant see the diff

Change of Engine

1. Replacement engine is identical to the original engine, or is an

option allowed by the manufacturer for the same model vehicle

The optional engine must be offered in Australia by the vehicle

manufacturer as an option for that vehicle (or certified variants). The

change of engine may be recorded by VicRoads provided that the

registered operator or a motor mechanic, or dealer in that make of

vehicle or an Automotive Engineer signs a declaration certifying the

engine is optional for the vehicle model, and that all modifications

made by the manufacturer for the same vehicle model with that optional

engine, have been completed.

But then as a silvia was never offered in australia so...

But sounds as though an engineer at least has to look at it

Engineer will need the brakes done, about the stud pattern, you'd need to ask the engineer that

Being its an import - VicRoads will send you to an engineer 9 times outta 10 as they dont want to pass judgement on imports etc.

If it was a AUS car - piece of piss, but ye. Imports are a pain for that

Thanks guys, I believe the bolt patterns should line up for the calipers, will guess I will find out soon enough. The main reason I ask is that I really dont wamt to get new wheels as the ones on it are quite expensive. Im going to have a hell of a time here in Vic as I have just come from queensland, and compared to Victoria the modification rules are seeming to be very strict. Eg my inlet alone has PWR front mount FMIC, Pod Filter, modded plenum and aftermarket BOV. And the ECU, well I guess I will have trouble transfering rego etc.

How strict is a roadworthy on modification issues, are they concerned with mods or just the safety aspects alone (hence the safety cert)??

the engine number prefix is the same....so i would simply fit the engine...then go to vic roads and have them sight the engine number....then thats it...obviously change the brakes for safety's sake...

Who said anything about moving plates and numbers around?????Vic roads dont have anything to tell them a vehicle has forced induction.

An engine block is an engine block and the numbers say that its an RB25 so wheres the problem?

    • I agree on doing some better than factory pistons, rods, and oil pump. For anyone using the vehicle on the road, I don't get why everyone wants big cams. The stock cam profile, with some more lift would be mint for road usage. Everyone going big cams and then wondering why it isn't as responsive in traffic, when they've shifted the torque curve upwards an additional 1000RPM. Make torque, at lower RPM. Sure it's not as cool as claiming "500KW" and revving it to 8,0000RPM, but that same torque 2,000RPM earlier... Then you don't need the extremely high end pistons and rods, and blah blah blah.
    • Personal experience. Those f**kers burn. And are actually a PITA to put out. Next time I walk down the back, I'll snap a photo of what the inside of the bonnet looks like when that thing ignites. PS, powder fire extinguishers are useless on that stuff too as it's fibrous and when it ignites, it starts to pull apart. And you end up just blowing powder through a sieve effectively.   Like the big thing is, if it's fire resistant, it's job is to stop what burning? The METAL above it? It's just to try keep heat off the bonnet paint work.

    • That's more or less what he meant. What it really means is that you do not have to go full crazy on the build. Don't need the best oil pump, expensive rods & pistons, big cams, etc. You can upgrade whatever you want instead of using stock level items, but you don't have to. Having said that - any time an RB is opened up, if anything is getting replaced, I think the opportunity should be taken to do all the sensible upgrades. Pistons, rods, pump, etc.
    • February update 🙂 We managed to get the very last 1/18th "Extra Scale" cars stock available from bookstores in Kyoto. These are actually the last ones and will not be restocked again! Hachette Collections Japan have not decided on a release date for these or other models in the series, so for the time being these are all there are available new.  These are showing up on Yahoo auctions at inflated prices already (especially the Celica and NSX) so get yours now at a very reasonable price before they disappear!
