GODZILLA VS WALKINSHAW AT LAKESIDE SPEED FEST

The stage is set for an epic showdown on August 7 & 8 when the original "Godzilla" takes on the very first Walkinshaw Commodore in a battle of the historic touring car titans.

The Lakeside Classic Speed Fest is the event, the fast, flowing bends of the iconic Lakeside Park raceway the venue and two of Australia's landmark touring cars the lead warriors in retro stoush sure to have race fans pining for the "good old days".

"Godzilla" of course is the infamous Nissan Skyline R32 GTR, driven to victory in the 1992 Australian Touring Car Championship (ATTC) and 1992 Bathurst 1000 by "gentleman" Jim Richards. Now owned and raced by Hope Island resident Terry Ashwood, the mighty Skyline was dubbed Godzilla by the motoring press after it monstered all comers in the '92 ATTC.

"I've had the car since 2001," explained Mr Ashwood, "and it still runs its original Winfield livery and exact mechanical specifications."

Considered by Nissan aficionados as a true "global" car, this R32 chassis number five, is valued at well over $1m but still competes with all its potent force when the green flag comes down.

The Skyline's fierce rival on August 7/8 is the first ever Walkinshaw Commodore, now owned by New South Welshman Norman Mogg. Originally campaigned by Neil Crompton and Win Percy for the Holden Racing Team, this car took seventh place at the 1989 Bathurst 1000 and has recently been completely restored following a 2007 Phillip Island smash.

Starting life as a 1988 Brock Commodore the car was taken to England by Tom Walkinshaw who designed the love it or hate it body kit. After extensive wind tunnel testing Tom Walkinshaw brought the Holden back to Australia as the first ever Walkinshaw racing car and the prototype for the road-going (and now highly collectable) Walkinshaw Commodores.

In the Lakeside Classic Speed Fest's Group A/C Touring car category Godzilla and Walkie will also be up against Rod Markland's 1991 R32 Nissan Skyline (in original GIO livery), Carey McMahon's 1988 Nissan Skyline HR31 GTS-R (as raced by Mark Skaife), George Nittis' ex-Damon Hill British Touring Car Championship Ford Sierra and Chris Bowden's Mazda RX-7, to name just a few.

Held over two action-packed days, the Lakeside Classic Speed Fest is a multi category event featuring racing, sprints, regularity, a mini hill climb and the Shannons Show and Shine.

Other touring car classes to take you back in time include Group N and the ever-popular Australian Trans Am Championship. Group N will see titanic tussles between Aussie legends such as Falcon GTs, XU1 Toranas, Ford Escorts and Holden Monaros, while the Trans Am series unleashes the fattest group of American muscle this side of Detroit.

The Lakeside Classic Speed Fest also features trade stalls, the Shannons Super Rig and the Queensland Motorsport Museum. With entry at just $20 per day and free entry for kids under thirteen the Lakeside Classic Speed Fest is one family event not to be missed!

Entry is $20 Saturday, $20 Sunday, $30 weekend pass, children 12 and under free, students 13-16 and pensioners $10 each day, payable at the gate

Lakeside Park is also only 10 minutes walk from Dakabin railway station

Oh and Roy...Seton in the M3 was quicker, but that was a DTM spec car...and that car is now banner from racing in our class from what I have heard....not saying he still would not have been the quickest just saying in a Group A spec M3 he more than likely would have been slower

Jetwreck you are wrong about the BMW M3 driven by Seton. It is not a DTM spec car. Please tell me what is DTM spec about it and not Group A.

The car has never run in the DTM and has never been DTM spec. It has always run Group A. Its history is :

Built by Schnitzer BMW in 1989 to race in the Italian Group A Touring Car Championship (CIVT). Driven regularly by Pirro.

Winner of the 1989 Wellington 500 Group A race. (Pirro and Ravaglia)

Sold to Charles Kwan of Hong Kong in 1990.

1990 Macau GP Guia race, Group A (Kwan)

1991 Macau GP Guia race, Group A clas (Kwan)

1991 Macau GP Macau Cup race Group A (Kwan)

1992 Macau GP Guia race, Group A class (Kwan)

1992 Macau GP Macau Cup race, Group A , winner, (Kwan)

1993 Macau GP Macau Cup race, Group A, winner (Kwan) SE Asia continued Group A into 1993.

Japanese Group A TCC

In 1991 and 1992 Kwan raced the car in Sport Evo spec with 2.5l engine and aero pack as homologated for Group A.

The car has had since 2001 a Group A FIA Historic Technical Passport

I have verified this history by speaking with Charles Lamm of Schnitzer and Charles Kwan. I have travelled to Hong Kong and Macau to specifically research the history of the car.

The car is in the same spec now as 1991 and 1992 except that it now has Speedline wheels which were available in 1992 and used in touring car racing in 1992.

I have had the car inspected twice by CAMS eligibility officers, the second time because of uninformed gossip . Frank Lowndes has looked at the specs in detail. Apart from the paint scheme I have not changed one single thing on the car since Dubois debuted it at Muscle Car Masters in September 2008 and Seton first drove it at Phillip Island in March 2009. It is the same now as it was then. It has the Sport Evo Aero pack and 2.5 l engine as it ran with in Group A in 91 and 92. It is now in its 92 Macau GP colour scheme.

It has not been banned nor is about to be. After the second recent CAMS inspection it has been granted a Group A Certificate of Description and historic Group A logbook.

The car will be at MCM in September 2010, again driven by Seton.

Unfortunately uninformed comments unfairly reflect on both the car and owner...me.

If that's the case Rob that's fine and I apologise profusely for submitting an unsubstantiated and quite obviously wrong rumour from hearsay on an open public forum.....I was going off what I had been told from other people at the events that know a lot more about BMW's than me!

I have never seen the history of the car until now....yet another error on my part and I should not have spoken up.

I have reported my post to the moderators to get edited!

Thanks for you reply Jetwreck. I didn't think you meant any harm with the comment but I thought I needed to correct it because continued comment tends to create its own truth. I know the person that is probably spreading the rumours in the first place. Unfortunately they do not have the courage to speak to me face to face.

On another note is the new Nissan Group A face the son of a famous touring car driver in an HR31.

After a long wait the Murray Carter DR30 is back from the panel/paint shop now in beautiful black. Won't be long before it is finished. First outing probably Phillip Island historic

I Didn't know dad was famous :D.....on a serious note I don't know who the driver may be!.....I think it's just Roy stirring the pot!

You driving the DR30 at PI? We had huge problems at PI this year! We rectified most of the problems for Lakeside and the car was a little rocket ship.....they are an awesome car!!!!!......a lot more forgiving and neutral than the HR31 too!....just a bit wobbly in the backside!

not really group a related but a crazy story never the less

bp down the road for me where i always fill up

the dude behind the counter sees me towing r31's and gtr's all the time and ocasionally have a chat with the old dude about where i am heading to race

the other day he says i used to drive a couple of those old gtrs at oran park ocasionally

so had a chat with him

says hes fred gibson cousin or relative and he drove all of the cars in the day, apparently he almost stuck the gibson gtr into a wall at oran park one day

he recons they went alright

anyway old bugger looks like fred so wonder if the story is true. doesnt seem like he who would pull your leg

???????

Both mine.

The GTR is the 91 Bathurst winner. Shortly to undergo change to those colours.

The photo is a bit small but that is Fred Gibson with the GTR

excellent choice....cannot wait to see it!
