OK, in the next few months i am tossing up between getting an R32 GT-R (I have always loved these, since Jim Richards & Mark Skaife used to race them) or an XR6 Turbo

I have seen a couple of threads about which mods to do first FMIC, Exhaust etc...

I would have at least $5k (probably closer to $10k) to spend on mods if i do get the GT-R. What would be advisable to do for under $10k and what kind of results would I achieve? Would it be wise to replace the stock turbo units?

Cheers guys

They are two completely different cars.

One will have a warranty, feel like disconnected boat with a stroker diesel.

The other will need constant money spent on it (if driven hard and regularly) Has a tourqless, short stroke motor and attracts the five-oh like flies to shite.

Check the dyno thread for the power / $ spent on mods your looking at.

Seriously, i don't think i could think of two different cars. The Fords are ECU locked and need one of those tricky CAPA thingos and have the build quality... well of an Australian built car.

Inversely, the BNR32 is a tuners dream, and as such, will never be as reliable / cheap to run as a newish TaxiCon.

Don't get me wrong, the boosted falcons are a good thang, but the attributes that would attract you to one, are at ends to a 18year old Japanese import, a GTR none the less.

Try and get a ride in a mild one, as someone correct me if im wrong, but a stock auto XR6 Turbo would KILL a lightly tuned GTR from a rolling start... and keep on doing it.

My biased view ...

i dunno bout that. i dragged a vy-ss that had 10k spend on it. my stock GTR sat next to him the whole time. this was on a drag strip by the way. street racing is illegal

That's cuz that is a holden mate

Spend $8k on an XR6T and ur looking at high 11's, nearly 400kW at flywheel.

Cheers for that rundown GeeTR

I have only ever had rides in GT-R's that were anything but mildly tuned! I dont think i have ever been in a stock one at all!

I think stock XR6T's run mid-high 13's, surely GT-R's are quicker than that

dont know where you are getting your info from but XR6 turbos run 14s.My old GTS4 has had many a doorhandle to doorhandle run with them. They are nothing superfast.A stock GTR should beat one.But it all depends on what you want the car for.A GTR would be pretty useless at towing a boat or comfortably seating 5 on a trip.

Definately not looking for towing a boat  Just looking for a nice ride. I don't have a family, although i will be getting married in September.. She can have the family car when the young'n comes along.. I just want something to have some fun in!

According to the manufacturer:

BAII/BF F6 Typhoon = 4.9-5.5 0-100km/h, 12.7-13.2 1/4 mile

BA/BAII/BF GT = 5.3-5.8 0-100km/h, 13.3-13.7 1/4 mile

BA/BAII/BF XR8 = 5.7-6.0 0-100km/h, 13.6-14.0 1/4 mile

BA/BAII XR6 Turbo = 5.8-6.2 0-100km/h, 13.8-14.1 1/4 mile

Basically, just get an edit + CAI and your into high 12's in an XR6T

XR6 Sedan would be ok...how about a Typhoon? Seems like a lot of maniacs buy the utes and actually they are becoming the new VL, trying to bait me at the light deal lol

"but a stock auto XR6 Turbo would KILL a lightly tuned GTR from a rolling start... and keep on doing it." Not my lightly tuned GT-R...not even on their best day. Proved it

Phoons are bloody awesome, i just dont have enough dosh to get one  I think they are circa $40k which is about $10k out of my budget. With my wedding and buying a house coming up, i need that $10k! lol

Just how 'lightly' is your GT-R tuned mate?

Ok with your future circumstances coming up then I would recommend the XR6 Turbo then. Sure its the same price range as the GTR however the XR6 is a newer fresher car.GTRs are getting old and maintenance is critical. If it hasnt already had an engine rebuild chances are it will need one soon.Thats when the big dollars start flying !!! As much of a GTR fanatic as I am, I would only recommend buying one if its a GTR or nothing type of affair. Many cars can be made to go like a rocket not just GTRs...hope that helps

what makes u think a rebuild on a xr6t is cheap?? last one i did was in excess of 6k. and that was just a standard rebuild.

as for xr6t is faster... lol yer ok  my 200kw 180sx tore those things apart..

dont compare a race car with number plates to the titanic. numbers on paper are different to numbers in the real world.

im yet to see an xr6t STOCK pull of a 13sec pass @ calder.. yet ive seen plenty of noobie gtr drivers reel off very 13s and hi 12s with no mods...

As GeeTR said, two very different cars.

A diplomatic viewpoint...

r32 GTR - A known legend and a track weapon. However is becoming very old and very hard to find in reasonable condition. Expect to spend a fair amount maintaining such an old car and paying a high insurance premium. Really buy this car for the love of it.

XR6T - Newer generation car that is a glorified sedan with questionable build quality. Certainly some power and responds well to mods. Insurance may be similar but maintainence shouldn't be as high (due to age). Nice creature comforts.

In summary hard to compare, one is RWD and the other RW/AWD when needed. One has two doors the other 4. Plus the 18 year age difference. By the sounds of what YOU need I would go XR6T.

How about considering a 4 door R34GTT? Definitely closer to the mark to an XR6T.

GTR is inherently a better performance car than the Falcon as they didn't have to compromise to build it and that's why they are still able to hold their own. that said, and not withstanding some reliability issues, if you just want something practical and quickish you probably can't go wrong with a Falcon. but seems like you're prepared to let wifey do the sedan thing so the GTR is a good bet as in 4 years time the Falcon will be an old Falcon and the GTR...is still a GTR.

Buy wisely and there are bargains to be had in terms of cars with rebuilt motors, steel turbos etc. Buy impatiently and you can end up with a money pit. You might need to spend a little to get it sorted so everything works, remove hicas etc and get attesa working properly, but there is enough knowledge on here with people going through the wringer with theirs that the challenges aren't as bad as they used to be.

Really?

I know a few guys who have pulled 13.7-13.9 at WSID in stock auto xr6t's

I love my GTR's.. I suppose it's really going to come down to how much the wedding costs and how much the repayments on the mortgage will be.. lol. I will probably just keep trolling tradingpost.com.au and see if a nice example of a GT-R does pop up.

I appreciate the non-biased comments, i was half expecting people to say how good the GT-R is and how shit the XR6T is, lol.

So any tips when looking to buy a GT-R?

Obviously from what people have said in here is to make sure the engine has been rebuilt, what else?

I saw a nice 92 GT-R with a rebuilt engine and new turbos for $21k only 91000 on ODO

Keets / Bumble - know what your saying, buuut, I still stick by my comment

A drag race, where you know its coming then yes, R / 200jiggabang 180sx wins; drop 2 gears, bang bang - done.

In real life, your forgetting though, those XR6 Maniacs are sneaky tradies. With their stock exhausts, they creep up so quick; your more likely to hear them coming from the blaring AC-DC or rear muffler turbulence :) My point is that you can mash the throttle at any speed in one, and they just go. So on the street, in real life they are quicker then a light tune GTR. I don't mean the Jap standard of light tune either. I mean boost, filters, zhaust.

Rem too, a stock XR6 will belt out just a 'few' more 14sec 1/4 then a stock GTR will 12.5's :D

not even on their best day. Proved it

I thrashed a stock XR6 for months, and pumped quiet a few stock 'looking' R's. Like i said, while there still deciding what to do, what gear to chuck it into, how much boost to dial up onda Uleh EBC, the FalcoShite has already kicked down and laying 500nm (on the track of course)

Edited by GeeTR

lol @ pumped a few R's... u sure they were R's?

and i DONT believe u have tracked ur xr6t because im a regular tracker and an xr6t doesnt even keep up with my shitty civic around a track. its not about power either, its the fact that theyre are barges.

The gtr dude might be thinkin about what gear he wants, but his still in front

Ive ran many xr6ts, stock or worked, its always been the same outcome. They lose. Even those silly "my xr6t makes 400rwkw" wankers lose and i was making a lazy 300awkw... as for ur 500nm... mine made over 800nm the dyno :D

And she feels it too hahah

12.7 from a stock typhoon. i dont think so, more like mid to high 13's.

Dont get a 4spd auto or 5sp manualas they are shit and wont handle much of a power increase without causing you dramas , only the 6 speed man or auto are anygood. Always have problems with there rear ends, diff, drive shafts, diff bushes etc

    • I did read your post, a few times actually.    Done. Followed this step. [Negative probe should be on the cars chassis. Positive on the wire.]   Did this partially.. now that im reading this over, i only unplugged the LED lights. [Start as said above by unplugging everything (unplug the lights, and switches.] When you are talking about the switch, you're talking about the knob thing on the right side in the drivers seat right? If so, i need to take that apart?  [Now at the switch, there is a wire from the fuse, to the switch, so out your positive on that terminal. It should read open circuit. If it reads something, especially a stupid low value, the short is somewhere between the fuse and the switch.] At this point are you referring to the connector by the headlights?  [If that's fine, now put the positive probe on the wire that goes to the headlight (at the switch plug). If it reads stupid low, the fault is from the switch, to the headlight.] Did this. I can confirm that the LED lights aren't the issue [Another quick test, is take the whole LED light setup from the left, and plug it into the right side, does it still blow the fuse? If you put the right hand side led light setup on the left hand side wiring, does the left hand side wiring now blow?  If the blowing fuse swaps from right to left doing this, your LED lights are the issue.]
    • Hey was wondering if you ended up installing the R33 GTR speed sensor - I found one too and wanted to confirm it's a direct swap into the R34 6 speed?
    • After 23 years of owning a Skyline, finally had the latch go.  Followed this guide,  works like a dream again. Great Guide 👍
    • Hi all,   I’ve got the biggest lot of problems with my R33 GTS-T   It was a freshly rebuilt 25th anniversary RB25DET (plastic cas, neo cams) probably 6 years ago now   The engine was running so well but I fkd up badly and trusted someone I’d known for 10 years that was well known around Plazmaman for his welding and fab work. I added a lovely photo of some of his previous work. Not sure why my car was worked on by whoever did this shit     I’m normally someone who would never open myself up to something like this, I still can’t believe I did it. Trusting him literally fkd it all up for me. Everything has been a struggle, like it’s almost been 6 years that’s how much I’ve just on and off been trying to work it all out.    All I wanted was a car that danced down low, like full boost from around 3~3500rpm to redline, don’t really care what power it puts down (if it ever does) but I just wanted it to be quick to get on it.    He recommended the turbo to get, I picked Hypergear but he told me to get the front 4” with a T4 and 0.68 rear housing.    I was expecting all these beautiful welds, tidy fab work and paid for it to be ready to go to a tuner when I got it back.    I got a car back that was an absolute mess, I actually couldn’t believe it was my car anymore. I don’t think you could even call what he did welds, they’re disgusting.    So I stripped everything he touched off it and with every bolt I loosened it just got worse and worse.    I covered it and literally built and finished another car in the meantime but now it’s getting to the point where I really want my Skyline back.   Its a struggle because I paid him to do all this shit because I didn’t know how to and now I’ve had to try and figure it all out omg    Please excuse the bird shit horrible welds, I’ve got my show pony car and am so beyond dealing with this car I don’t even really care at this point.    If someone told me about what he did to my car I wouldn’t have believed them but it happened to me. It was unbelievable. He went missing, my car went missing, it came back missing parts, the straight af chassis rails bore the scars of being dragged up a trailer backwards, even the sandwich plate was bent. Everything was leaking and open to whatever fell into it, rounded off/ missing bolts, power steering oil and coolant everywhere, no gaskets, parts stolen off it, even managed to damage the sump pan.   Promised me he’d finish the car, knew what it meant to me, I paid him thousands and thousands just for him to trash it. He told me he was fully licensed and insured, come to find out he’d cancelled his ABN, so obviously no insurance. I had laid up insurance on the car and would’ve been covered but I was scared they would’ve written it off or because the business was no longer trading I’d still be liable.    He was supposed to:  New fully custom mild steam pipe exhaust manifold with turbo location moved from factory position to high forward mount. (I don’t know if it is a mild steam pipe, I’ve got a funny feeling the waste gate isn’t in a very good position and I don’t think the outlets off each cylinder are equal) 4” custom stainless steel dump with external gate (he re-plumbed it) Cut and shut OEM intake manifold with throttle reposition (I ended up doing the throttle reposition) Box in pod filter (left out) New 100cel catalytic converter (pretty sure it’s there but unsure if it’s 100cel) Front mount intercooler piping fabricated to suit (all smashed up and rusty holes where he was supposed to make it look standard where fmic piping passes through. I don’t even think my front bar is going to fit 🙄) Custom 5” intake pipe from pod to turbo (didn’t come with it so had to do something to make it work with the Z32 afm)   Engine: Full cylinder head service & machining  Brand new valves Precision upgraded spring kit Engine block honed New bearings  New piston rings  New ARP conrod bolt kit New ARP head studs Cometic head gasket VRS kit   ATR43SS2 ball bearing turbo 0.68 rear housing  Turbosmart 45mm external wastegate (got delivered to the fab bloke, I’ve got no idea what spring is in it, I’m assuming the one that came pre installed) Walbro 260 fuel pump  Nismo 740cc injectors (tested to 880) Spitfire coil packs GCG FMIC RB25DET manual 5 speed 4:11 rear diff   I’ve got an Apexi Power FC in it atm, I was hoping to just get it to operating temp to make sure everything was okay before towing to a tuner but it’s over-fuelling too much. I don’t think that’s going to happen so i think I’m going to get either a Link G4 or Haltech for it. What do you guys recommend? I can’t work out the power FC so just gonna give up on that one     It’s got an exhaust leak coming from somewhere I can’t see 🙄    The fuel pressure was steady but now it like drops from 40 to 20psi randomly (noticed this yesterday)    I’ll attach pics of the shit he put on my car and the engine bay now as it sits    I really just need some help, I need a tuner in Sydney I can trust, I’d like to be with the car while it’s being tuned if possible, I know it looks terrible but unfortunately I’ve just got to put up with it for now and fix the cosmetic stuff later   Do you guys think the manifolds are going to be okay? Or do I throw the exhaust manifold and try again?   I don’t even think these combinations are going to work tbh   I know everything I fitted was rated to be able to take at least 400kW but most rated higher    If you’ve gotten this far I really really appreciate it 🙏 I don’t mind if you trash me or the car, I made a rookie error and f**k I’ve paid for it. As you’ll see 🙄
    • From everything I’ve heard you’ll be waiting a long time for  the parts to arrive
