i think i might give ultimate a go, where are the places in canberra that have it? i know the one in Braddon doesnt, its the closest to me

You certain?? I always filled up there and thought it was Ultimate, cos they have the advertisements on the pumps...

Another fan of BP Ultimate here (assuming I'm right about the above...), even though I've only used others a few times as necessary, BPU is the one that seems to have the solid reputation.

The post you quoted is from 2003, they may not have had it 5 years ago.

There is 98 at Caltex in Braddon, it's a white label; called Vortex 98. I use this fuel, never had a problem with it.

I've tried BP 98 as well, didn't notice a difference in performance.

I might get 400km on a tank if I'm taking it easy, the Caltex fuel seems to burn up pretty fast if I'm not

I got 400km or so on the BP fuel driving on the highway.

I might try to BP fuel a few more times to test the difference, since everyone seems to like it the best.

Optimax or Vpower = 98

Vpower racing = 100 5% ethhol

ah, at last! someone finally called it by its actual name! :)

which fuel you use can probably be determined by what mods you've got done to your car.

eg: My car is using the factory ECU and only has a front mount and exhaust, so its no big deal to me to use all the varients of the 98 ron fuels. however, other cars with programable ECU's and more serious mods will be tuned to run a particular kind or brand of fuel and wont perform as well when owners have to switch fuel brands for whatever reason.

having said that, i've also tried V-Power Racing (102 ron and 5% ethanol) and i definately noticed a fair difference, even in my car, but after about 3 weeks of running on only that fuel, my car started to miss and breakdown. because ethanol burns at a higher temp than petrol, i think the spark plugs dont like the extra heat. i only say this as my mate who was using the same fuel as me at the same time, starting having the same problems. once we drained the petrol tanks (absoulte pain in the ass!) and used the 98 ron stuff again, the cars went back to working fine. maybe it was a bad batch of fuel, but it definately leaves food for thought....

Frink (Luke) is spot on... Not every car will perform the same on all fuels, my advice - shop around and try a tank of each and pay careful attention to how your car feels.

My car has quite a few power mods and programmable managment and I have had good, bad and very bad experience with different fuels in the past.

When I had my engine tuned using BP Ultimate about a year ago, it was very nice and smooth and power delivery was almost instant, but after about 6 months (or less) using only Ultimate I noticed that the engine wasnt as smooth and after a while it was starting to ping!

The reason is that apparently (so I have been told) BP changed the chemical composition of the fuel which screwed with my tune. So I started trying different fuels = Shell Vpower (not good at all), Caltex Vortex 98 (still no good) I settled on Mobil Synergy and within a week the problems almost disapeared (but I still needed another tune by then).

I use Mobil Synergy now and find it the best for response and power.

i've also tried V-Power Racing (102 ron and 5% ethanol)

I found no difference in normal driving using this but I think it's only 100 octane.

According to the Shell website

"New Shell V-Power Racing is Australia’s only specially formulated 100 octane fuel with 5% ethanol available at the pump."

So basically you cant go wrong with BP Ultimate or Mobil 98. Shell 98 isnt too bad either, Caltex 98 not as good and everyone can just point and laugh at it.I have run the Mobil Diesel for a while now in the troopie and found it really good as with their 98 I found excellent, but atm im using BP in the Supra and it goes very well. I recommend southsiders go to the BP at Chisholm since I believe it has brand new fuel tanks and a lot less chance of contamination.

heres an interesting report done by sydney uni. its 3 years old i know, but the info is probably still valid, and more importantly they produced results on a dyno in a controlled environment. finally some hard facts!

i recommend reading the whole thing, but a quick summary

if you want to use 98 octane fuels, then some ethanol blends show impressive power, if you dont want to use ethanol go with Caltex 98.

caltex 98 produced more power on an STI than BP ultimate 98, optimax 98, and synergy 98.

id like to see results on other cars, but the STI is a pretty good car to use. it adjusts the ignition timing dependant on what fuel is used and its a turbocharged engine.

ive always used caltex 98, because its whats closest to where i live, ive never had any complaints with it

I've generally found that BP is the best and produces (to my feel) the bst power out of any car I have tried it in... I tend to only use 98 even in the Starlet I drive. It's just better for the car and makes the drive better.

I have found, and this could just be me, that Optimax burns quicker then Ultimate.... anyone get that? Or am I just crazy? LOL

Been struggling to get 98 octane at a reasonable price Northside for a few weeks now. Shell ran out so the BP in Jamison hiked up their prices(at one point I payed $1.65/l when there normal unleaded was $1.38) which I was pretty angry about. Now BP is out, just found out last night that Kippax Mobil still has Synergy 8000 and at a good price, only 11c more than regular.

Like I've said Before BP Jamison are the suck, only time I actually will fill up there is if I'm running bone dry, and then only 5 or 6 litres, bloody rip off merchants, I know they cant do anything about prices, but charging 26cents extra for premium is a joke, i won't go on any further. :domokun:

Vortex comes in two flavours, normal 96 [dark green label] and Gold 98 [whitish label].

I used Woolworths dark green cos my missus had a shopper docket...........and I got knock readings, but I reckon its in my tune and will take a degree or two out with a retune soon. I can't get 98>100 RON juice here so 96 or 98 is it.

    • Hey @Butters, did you end up getting this clutch in ? I have just ordered to a uniclutch track to go in my getrag 6 speed that’s in my BNR 32
    • I know you don't want to hear this comment, but I can't not say it.  I just can't see 200kw being worth the time and effort. Its like guys with NA cars, putting in headers/exhaust/tune for a massive 20% jump in power. Great, the slow car is still slow and you're down $10,000.  My vote is leave it NA or price in a gearbox upgrade and shoot for at least 300KW, preferably 350KW+.  Now you have a NC that will try to kill you from time to time and will be exciting to drive
    • Ah yep. The main message I want to pass on is, try not to get scared of ghosts when thinking about knock/knock detection.  What I mean is, healthy engines make noise. Knock is also noise. Your knock sensor and ECU combo are trying to determine bad noise from good noise based on how loud the noise is. The factory knock sensors and ECU are not good at doing this.  Modern ECU's are pretty decent at it, however I'd still say that you would want to verify that if your ECU says it's knock, that you actually listen to it and confirm that it is correct.  Are you familiar with the plex knock monitor?  https://www.plex-tuning.com/products/plex-knock-monitor-v3/ I expect you're the type of person that would be very keen to play with something like this. It is great knock detection and you can pop some headphones on and listen to what's going on.  Knock that you've deliberately induced in low load low RPM areas is not really putting anything at risk and is a great tuning/learning/verification tool.  I just thought this was worth mentioning based on the way you were talking about setting up a base map and the Haltech base map settings. There are better ways to spend your time then chasing ghosts and worrying about detonation in scenarios that it is crazy unlikely to encounter it.  I was also wondering, what ECU are you planning to get? Will it be long til you pick it up?
    • This came quicker than I thought. It ain't even 2025 yet.
