Hi all,

Just need some opinions that's all. Since import my car has had an HKS ETC (Electronic Torque split controller) fitted to force it into whatever split of torque to the front wheels you want up to 50:50. Now I've never really used it and my 4WD has always been fine....torque gauge builds when I lose traction.

Recently I have seen an intermittent problem...The 4WD light doesn't go out after then engine starts...either that or it comes on a coupla seconds after.

Now this is irrelevent of the ETC which I hadn't used (well maybe once or twice when I first got the car).

So this only happens sometimes but once it does, I have to turn the car off and leave it for a little while before I can start it again and get no 4WD light.

I checked the error code on the ETS unit in the boot and get error 18 or "ETS pressure switch or circuit".

I've checked the wiring and all seems well and fine (the ETC is obviously attached into the 4wd harness) but all plugs connectors seem fine. Fuses for the system are fine as well. Level of fluid in the boot is also A ok, sitting a little bit over the max line, even after ignition.

Now here is the intersting thing that makes me think it could be the hydralic part of the system the ETS itself, dying.....

On the instances where the 4wd light doesn't come on.... if I switch the ETC on, the torque gauge will build to the defined limit ok fior maybe 5 seconds then suddenly drops to zero and then 4wd light comes on. If it doesn't I can switch the ETC off and then on it definately drops to zero and illuminates

4wd. When this happens and I then drive the 4wd is off completely and I get no torque to the front.

So does anyone have a solution, things I can check that I haven't ? Or do I need a new ETS pump...OR could it be something else broken....I've looked at some of the posts on here but nothing really answers it and there doesn't seem to be anyone who mentions and HKS ETC.

The reason I suspect the pump is that it is only an intermittent problem though it IS getting more frequent AND the fact that on using the ETC it's almost like the system turns on builds the torque at the front but then fails and can't sustain it. Note though that if I turn the ETC on when the light isn't on I can hear the pump engage by the rear drivers side wheel. Once the light is on....nothing.

Please help or ideas...sorry for long post

Cheers

    • Ha ha, that is very true!  I'm too scared to leave it in the position though, it tingles my balls seeing it like that!
    • Which one did you buy? I have always wanted a decent inspection camera but have been unable to tell whether something is cheap junk or cheap junk chunk sold at just a bigger markup
    • Ha ha ha! I know those feels mate I've finally got the garage cleared enough that next weekend I'll do some actual work on my car (hopefully). Unfortunately garage isn't usable after 10am at the moment That said, I've done a lot of work this weekend on helping finalise a friend's Production Race car. Full started Christmas Eve. We're down to about 8 tasks on the list, including "get a wheel alignment". Sometimes it's just easier working on someone else's car or project than our own stuff 😛
    • Ha ha, ended up going it alone.  I just sent it (in a very nervous fashion).  Once I'd released the locks and it didn't automatically start spinning out of control i felt a bit more confident.   It made some loud sounds (cracking and creaking noises) when I first spun it which got the heart rate going again!  I couldn't bring myself to leave it tipped on the side.  I feel a bit more comfortable having back right side up while it sits there. I'd get angry with your last point but you're 100% correct! 😅 Even yesterday I managed to distract myself at numerous times to make a bracket to fit an LED flood light off the back of the house and fix my sons pushbike.  There were other little taks nibbling at my brain for the rest of the day too...
    • Probably one of the more nerve wracking experiences of my entire life! 😂😂 The balance (centre of gravity) is out still but in a direction that gives me comfort!   It's quite bottom heavy still meaning it takes a bit of muscle to rotate it.  The plus side of that is that it wants to to go back to upright.  Better that than wanting to go all stranded turtle on me!
