Hey guys,

Have a mildy modded 32gtr -> 13psi (stock turbos), cat back 3.5", hiflow cat and modded airbox. Have read changing the dumps is a turbo off jobbie which is fine as its a w/e car but is it worth the time and effort & will the difference be noticeable in sound/performance? Who here has undertaken this? Will also change the front pipe @ the same time, or is this worth doing instead and leaving the stock dumps?

Any info appretiated

Regards

mike

Just about to make the same sort of changes myself.

From my understanding the standard R32 dumps are quite restrictive, and the standard front pipes remind me of a straw in some parts so I would say changing these will open it up a bit.

They run so damn rich though especially if you up the stock boost - mine gets as rich as 10.5:1 up top on 13psi - a remap or PowerFC and some cam gears in conjunction with the exhaust should really give you some more poke.

Plenty of gain in changing out R32 dumps.

R34 dumps are pretty good, but the 32 ones are just crap and the car will benefit from added flow due to less restriction.

Also do front pipes also, no point doing it by halves.

thanx

nismoid: yeh definetly doing the front pipe whilst im @ it.

Paul: Yeh noticed how thin the pipes were. The previous owner claims the stock ecu was remapped but didnt think it could be done & i think he was getting confused with them (xspeed) meaning they were checking the AFR. AFR is 11.5.

What benefit will changing the cam gears give? Is this changing the timing to give longer duration? would there be any downsides as in reduced bottom end?

Mike

Yep apparently the R32 ECU is completely re-flashable so - as long as your not changing things like injectors or air flow meters - are a really good option if you got someone that can tune them. I guess you can also get things like speed cuts removed.

Re: cam timing - my knowledge is a shady but from what I understand the cam timing from factory was set up for shorter duration with emissions in mind - so yeah adjusting for longer duration gives the gain.

Anyone else more knowledgeable clued up on this?

stock R32 ECU's can be remapped for injectors, AFM's, the works... no issue there.

And cam gear's offer good gains, have a search as there are a couple of detailed write ups on them now from two users who did testing.

Definatly change the dump pipes. I took my stock on out and yes it looks like straws. Lucky I changed it tho cuz my mechanic found it had a hole in it. Now I got these huge dump pipes and the air flow is much better. You will notice the difference. Also it makes a "WOOOO" noise and sounds good. LOL

Get rid of the stock turbos they will be your worst nightmare later on, get some r34 n1's aka garrett GT2860R - 707160 - 5 or -7's

replace the dumps and front pipe too dumps from hks, trust, tomei, xforce, all good!

Thanks for the info.

I knew the 32 gts's was completely remappable just wasnt sure bout the gtr's. So previous owner was right then.

Yeh thought the Y piece and dumps would change the tunes a little.

Been thinking long & hard bout changing the turbos while im @ it for reliability issues cause have always been nervous of turbine failure. Happy powerwise the way it is though but have read too many cases of turbine failure especially since im running 13-14psi.....

On the otherhand my best m8 has a EVO IX with a full 3" system, cosworth cams, 25psi + a verso tune, both cars are dead even in a straight line (small variances through changing gears) running exactly the same terminals @ the local strip (178km) but he'll be getting a bigger turbo down the track :ninja:
