Hey guys

I've had my R33 S2 GTS-T for a year now, no problems at all.

I just realised recently that the steering wheel wobbles quite frequently when the car reaches 80km/hr or beyond

Is that normal?

I think when I bought the car, it didn't wobble as much, until when it hit maybe 100km/hr or more.

But I'd just like to know at what speed everyone's steering wheel starts to shake.

I'd also wanna know if any of you guys have done anything to minimize the shake.

Cheers

How bad? Hit any gutters lately?

Try getting a wheel balance. Cost about $5 each per wheel at any tyre shop.

If that doesn't fix it, you have to start looking at suspension bushes and other things that other people can probably explain better.

+4 get your wheels balanced

+1 more for that...

i took mine for a drive out 2 nanango on friday arvo... bout a 3 hr drive... and to test the new white speedo u sent me :) i took it 2 180km/h... (wouldnt go any faster) :P and it handled at 180 like it would @ 80... amazing those japanese cars ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

What about under brakes, does it get any worse.

I had the shakes under brakes when i travelled over 80Kms.

Front rotors required machinin (costs about $100 all up) fixed the shaking all together and my R33 drove lieka new car after that.

Hope this helps.

Eitherway id prob take it to a mechanic for a checkup before you start spending your money and time on something that may be totally unrelated to what anyone in this forum is talking about! Not knocking anyones opinions by the way!!!! If your in Adelaide (S.A), id recommend Midas Brighton, they look after my car beautifully

Regards, Evan

In my previous experience usually a balance and alignment will fix it. Get both done, I am having the same problem after about 90km/h, took it in but they could only do a balance as their computer does not have the specs for my 33 GTST.. So it still shakes over 90 until they get the specs. (Can anyone here help me out? i have searched and found some but i don't really know exactly what they need, If I can find the specs for them I can get it done sooner)

Cheers

Definately your wheel balance. Get it done asap, leave it for long and you'll add uneven wear to your tyres and have to get the pair replaced

You shouldnt need any specs for wheel balance and if the wheels arnt stock then the toe/camber angles etc. that are in the workshop manual will be no good to you anyway

Wheel balance = stop vibrations.... AKA shakes

Wheel alignment = allows car to drive in a straight line (depending on camber of the road).

Disc Machine = Stop vibration/pulsation under brakes.

A wheel alingment will not fix a vibration and vice versa for a car that pulls left or right.

Cheers.

could be your mags...

have you changed them?

or your tyre/tyres...

i put a set of second hand mags on my VS commodore and shook like mad at 80km. thought it was something else so got it checked out and replaced all my bushes etc... didnt change a thing. took my mag to a wheel and tyre specialist and found out they were slightly out of round.

and recently on my R33 i had the same thing happen and jacked my car up to discover a lump in the tyre.... replaced the tyre and solved the problem.

might pay to check this out

ookaay, Have had same mags and tyres since I got the car 6 mths ago. about 2 weeks ago steering wheel vibration started at over 100km/hr. Have had a nail in rear left tyre and had it repaired, could this cause the problem? Nothing else has changed. steering also pulls left a little. tyre was repaired then 2 days later had them balanced. still want to get the alignment.

thanks for the help guys! it is appreciated

I had the same problem with my car. I tried the wheel alignment, wheel balancing, new tyres nothing worked.

I had the mechanic look at it and when the car was on the hoist, i cant remember what he did but theres a steering box rubber or sumthing. That rubber gets worn out and needed a change.

Changed that and i havnt had a problem after that.

I think from memory he turned the wheel to one end and tried to nudge it futher (this is with a long screw driver kinda thing not the streeing wheel) and if you find the entire steering box move then thats the movement that your experiening when your driving.

My had the same problem when i hit around the 100000kms mark as well.

Hope this helps

dood best thing is to get both done, wheel balance and aligned and you will have better handling and control of ur car plus ur tyres will ware out slower. do it first thing soon, maybe what that guy is talking about is ur bushes??? not sure, and if it is a noise and wabble your wheel bearings need to be changed, i had mien done when i did my 100k major serviced had a hole lot done to mien its a even better sweet drive nows. oh dont leave it out to long if it ur wheel bearings u will have to spend even more because it will wear out this other thing i forgot it was called lolz anyway hope thats some helpfull advice.

    • Update time!  The JZX110 had some maintenance needing to be done, so a lot of the seals with replaced to fix some oil leaks. Also used this opportunity to whack on a front mount that I'd bought some time ago.  I also finally got the rear lip painted and fitted.  I then got the exhaust done. It's just a catback for now. Custom made 3" stainless with a turn down. I could have a tip coming out, but it will require cutting the rear lip and possibly the bumper itself. So far I do like and it's made the car a little more zippy.  Close out with some nice pictures of the cars and a sneak peek of what's next.

    • Just something I found searching for more info on Emotion R, apparently the ECR33 Skyline GTS25t was either originally black, or there were two of them, the black one being the original demo car, then building a white one which was part of the 1997-onwards (to at least 2008!) Cockpit Tatebayashi Tokyo Auto Salon booth demo cars. It appears that Emotion R closed down in 2008 and was declared bankrupt in 2010: http://bank-db.com/hasan/208365.
