sorry to dig an old thread, but people have been using these for a while so im after some info...

with the varex shut, and the gasses diverting through the muffler and out the small hole, does this provide too much of a restriction? and would this damage the engine?

if i installed my varex i would have it shut 99% of the time, and only really open it up on the track, but i dont want to risk damaging the engine if i drive around with it shut day to day.

my car is rb25det with 262rwkw. running a cheap china hot dog and cannon atm,

It will run fine shut, however I've been advised not to give it WOT / full boost when shut...mainly just for punting around in the city because it is quite restrictive (read: quieter than stock). The varex isn't really that loud when it's open...it's quite a nice exhaust note actually. Just get a middle muffler and you'll find you're only closing it when you see a police car in the vicinity.

I found the Varex to be fine shut right down when putting around town, otherwise I would leave it wide open.

As birds has mentioned, even wide open it is not particularly loud, and it definitely produces a nice note - much nicer than the Xforce cannon I had on previously. I certainly wouldn't put my foot down with the Varex closed down, or even partially closed down.

You may possibly lose a few KW into the bargain with the Varex - I didn't put mine on the dyno after the change, so that is only a guess on my part.

I should add that I got the oval twin pipe version, and not the cannon type.

I certainly didn't regret getting the Varex, didn't notice any actual power loss and loved the note it produced.

Originally I bought it for situations where I didn't want to attract attention, and Varex did a great job as far as that went.

Have replied to these threads previously but,

Compared to alot of the off the shelf products it does produce a good note, but you are paying the extra cost to have it

It does lower the kW output when shut, but it doesnt damage your engine running it shut on day to day driving as I've had mine for over a year not a problem at all, but if you want to put your foot down I'd recommend it open...

Depending on the car your running it off is to how loud the car is, as my friend has it on his 34 GTT and another on an RX7 and they are ear piercing when open...so don't count them out, they may not be a screamer pipe but they can be loud

I'm currently having mine changed from remote to in car switch to turn mine from Open > Half Closed > Closed, easy access if you are being tailed by cops

If you want it installed, I'd recommend contacting Auto Xcess in Nunawading, http://www.autoxcess.com.au/

Any questions feel free to PM me

I've been running a 3.5" in and single 3.5" out oval one of these for about 5 months now , and even wide open it would probably pass the 89/92 decibel or wtf the level is test.

I did the wire in myself and took power from the cigarette lighter with a small on/of rocker switch located next to the gearstick and the control box velcro'd down in front of the gearstick just under the ashtray so I can get at the fuse by taking the ashtray out if I need to check it .

It was a pita to put the wireing in as I had to remove the back seat ( friggen all of it) to get the wireing through (though others may know of a better way off doing this) I also had to drill a larger hole in the boot next to the spare to get the cable through as the damn plug on the cable wouldn't go through the hole that is already there (you could also cut the cable and re-attach it) , I just followed the factory loom and attached the cable to it with ties and crossed over to the centre console under the drivers seat , If you go this way don't forget to put the grommet for the hole in the boot over the cable before you feed the cable through.

You could probably cowboy this though by running the cable underneath the car and comming up through the gearstick BUT it would be visible and as these things are not legal I figured that I would leave as few signs that it was actualy there as possible.

If you fiddle with it you can get it to open to just about anywhere you want, I run mine at about 70% open , it cuts out nearly all the mind numbing drone that a 3.5" system notoriously produces and as there is a bypass pipe you loose virtualy no flow loss just the noise, but it was a bit fiddly to do .

I have mine highset so the on muffler control is extremely difficult to see and given the basic quietness of the muffler I doubt anyone would bother to give it a good look anyway.

One other thing--a muffler shop I talked to told me they can jam so I guess it would be a good idea to fully open and close it fully a few times on a regular basis to make sure it dosen'r 'seat down' as it were.

Phew--and thats what I know about that

    • Ducan , yeah sure mate , the unit is https://www.carlinkit.com/ambient TBox Ambient -  plugs straight into the USB C and it runs as a android  unit and you can link your phone to it via Bluetooth , but it only allows for one phone at a time. you can download and apk files you want and load it on there , I downloaded a basic maps apk (OsmAnd+ — Maps & GPS Offline) so I can run navigation without data usage , its not as good at google or wazes but it works fine for what I need. I can put up screen shots if you like. Cheers Pac

    • The gearbox in my R32 GTS4 (now with RB25DET) has just over 300k on it . Life includes some track time. Has had one change of oil in its lifetime. I rev match on down changes. I don't have any problems with synchros or gear crunching.
    • Currently advertised with some A4 flyers up at work for $30k ono Will detail it next week, and get some good picks for carsales, then put the cover back on and put it back on the tender until someone comes to look at it No real hurry to sell, in saying this I would like it gone with in 6 months as I am retiring in May 25 and lose the ability to store the car undercover in a secured site, plus as we are moving out of Sydney the potential buyers market will be more limited https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/485907-2002-vx-ss-commodore-30000-ono/
