so nearly a month after al my problems started im suspecting my CAS is faulty.

the symptoms are:

missing sometimes (not always) after 4000rpm

missing on idle (quite bad sometimes)

stalled once going from reverse to drive (auto)

knocking when under load (not always)

gave error for CAS when obd was checked

have done all the usual checks:

changed plugs

checked coils

afm etc

the guys that have been looking into my probs are a very reputable workshop..they suspected the sitc I had installed was causing the error code and misfire possibly so that was disconnected but its still missing and now knocking also..im taking it back 2day to see if the error code is back.

but in the mean time..by the sounds of the symptoms could the CAS be a real possibility?

anyone else who's had one die/ be faulty have any similar problems?

I've spent a lot of money trying to find the problem and I don't want to jump into buying a new cas from nissan unless im pretty sure that's the fix. they want 700 for one..

I had all the same problems with my Rb30e after rebuilding it. I managed to fit the IACC plug onto INJ1 (only plugs that will go back together wrong!!). Did weird things like that, although it didnt miss at higher rpm usually (coilpacks?)

quickest and easiest way is to goto wreckers/mates and offer them $10 to borrow one for 30mins to check.

CAS usually work or don't or they cause the car to cut out once they get hot and the car will not start until it cools down again. Your problem sounds more like an ignition module fault to me. If it is the CAS, its a strange problem, if it had a miss all the time, it may have bearing dust blocking some of the optical slots on the disc inside it, but it would have the problem all the time typically.

Thats actually the ignition module that cuts out when it gets hot. Exactly, CAS operation can be very intermittant, especially in crap copys (anything non ACA).

Mighty big dust particles to block up those holes :/ I think its more to do with dust sitting all over the optical lens of the laser.

You could try putting a cas kit through it. Apparently people have problems with the bearing underneath in Rb30de dizzys. They get old and dry and tend to eject fine dust particles throughout, eventually interfering with the lasers ability to count the pickups on the optical disc

you need to get it to play up at idle preferably and unplug each injector until you find a cylinder not firing/injecting. (you need to listen for a decrease and increase in rpm as you pull and reconnect the plug to tell if that cylinder is operating)

easier to pull injector then the coil pack off on these engines. (no dissy leads)

if you can isolate it to a single cylinder, it's more then likely the coil, as they have a built in ignitor in r34 models i believe.

if every cylinder is doing something, but it still runs rough, go for the cas.

the problem will be getting it to play up when you want to test it.

edit: of course if you were in a workshop you could use the scope to check the integrity of the pattern on the cas signal lines and also ignition.
