R33 S1 turbo, a tad more laggier, but by using my ever so not accurate factory tacho, I hit full boost at around 4200rpm (14.5PSI) and she pulls hard all the way to around 7000rpm.

You will notice more puff compared to the RB20 turbo.

R33 S1 & remap along with your mods would be a great investment... dont bother with SAFCs.

the response of shifting power up in the revs are stupid.

ofcourse it will.

ANY turbo other than stock will have power come on a little later.

but will have more power.

the difference is like 300-500rpm.

once all the boost is in, you have heaps more torque and power from there on.

I don't see what there is to discuss.

$350 for turbo

$300 for labour to fit it

$150 for chip

$50 for a dyno run to confirm the mixtures are good.

this is "THE" cheapest power up on an RB20det.

next step up from there is double the dollars, a fraction more power, more lag.

up from there again is an RB25 transplant. = even more money resulting in stock RB25det.

My RB20 with stock turbo made 195rwhp @ 14psi, full boost ~2500-3000rpm I think (been a while..), put RB25 turbo on and it made 245rwhp @ 12psi, spooled about 3k full boost by ~4k and pulled hard to redline where the stock turbo would drop back to 10psi by redline. All of this was untuned on stock ecu, all I did was put an 044 pump in when the 25 turbo went on.

I'll pull out dyno sheets later..

Thats a huge increase in power with the two different turbos, i ran mine on the same dyno with the stocker and a hiflow...

237rwhp@ 14 psi with stocker.

260rwhp with the hiflow @15.5 psi with the injectors maxing out.

I was stoked with the 23hp increase for the extra 1.5 psi.

I wouldn't be happy.. the hiflow should "flow" a hell of a lot more for the same boost and an extra 1.5psi should have seen even more air again.

My RB25 turbo has been on two different engines (2L and 3L) and made pretty much the same power, just a lot sooner on the 3L. Again, same dyno.

How much can you really expect from the rb20? I would expect with it even more air (say18-20psi) i should see around the 300rwhp mark, i dont think thats not a bad power figure, considering the only things a changed is turbo and injectors.

220rwkw is pretty good, is it an rb20 hiflow or an rb25 hiflow? I thought rb25 hiflow are good for ~260rwkw..

It's not so much about the size of the engine as the size of the turbo, if the turbo can flow enough air to make 260rwkw, it will make 260rwkw (within reason), if it's on a 2L it will just take more revs to make the power than if it was on a bigger engine.

You can get more than 300rwhp out of an RB20 but the size of the turbos required means it would be quite laggy and come on boost REAL hard (i.e. lag lag lag lag WHEELSPIN).

Its an rb25 hiflow, i see full boost at 4100rpm which i dont think is too bad. CEF11E's rb20 was a well sorted setup and pretty much the pinnicle in regards to rb25 highflow on rb20 performance in my opinon. The difference is he has a remap and z32 afm(im using an safc and stock afm).

GTST - the turbo can still flow enough air for 260rwkw, but you'd probably need 8500rpm to get that figure out of an RB20 with that turbo(*figures are fictional, cbf doing the math).

AD4M was running 300rwkw with a 3071 I think it was, till it went pop :D

yeh... with the SAFC you really are missing out on the advantages of adjusting timing..

would bring on boost a fair bit quicker.

sell the SAFC to a stagea owner and get a remap :D

Thanks for the detailed response GTST, appreciate it.

I will be able to install the safc. Nipple has been attached to the elbow, so thats ready to go. Walbro pump will be installed by them too for $100 they said. Gaskets, bolts, vacuum hoses im willing to pay as install cant be done without them. Im prepared for the extra couple hundred dollars it may cost.

CRD have agreed to replace the turbo and pump while i wait, and then bring it in the next day for a tune. So im very happy that they have let me do this, coz i want to be aprt of the whole tuning atmosphere and that.

So u rekon 180kw is not acheiveable with the mods i have?

I think the dyno results will leave you a bit dissapointed... I recently had mine tuned, SAFC II, front mount, full 3" exhaust, jjr split dump and decat, turbosmart boost controller, rb25 turbo, walbro pump, nismo 550cc injectors, running 12psi, just hit 170kw atw... good compression on all cylinders... RB20's are pretty limited, thats why im about to throw a rb25 in mine... thats what i have had a lot off people reccomend to me... :D

4th of March, i already have Iridiums and Oil change is coming up, so that will be done next week. I think my plugs need to be regapped though to .8mm as i get some hesitation at 5000+rpm

Ive currently got full 3" Xforce exhaust, fmic, catco cat and Apexi Pod

For starters fu ck the irdiums off waste of money put coppers in it cost 3 bucks each and get the same results i fuc ked a set of iridiums within 1k km's

Definately go the rb25 turbo. I went from the stock 20 turbo running 13psi to the rb25 turbo only running 10psi and there was an increase. Sure there is a tad more lag, but well worth the trade off. If it wasn't worthwhile, how come so many people have done it???

so after reading all this. putting in a rb25 turbo is the best way to go are second hand turbos real reliable but? i have being saving heaps of money to by high mount and massive turbo but that doesnt seem to be good. i do have tricked auto gear box dont hold that against me but the way i drive its either bounce redline or drive to 3 grand would big turbo be good in this case?? im thinkin it would be allrite in my case

    • If you are fine with China turbos, Maxpeedingrods makes a bolt on turbo. Ive had mine for two summers now and it seems to be holding up ok.
    • Howdy all Im in a little predicament and wondering what everyone’s thoughts are? I’ve had my long block rebuilt and am in the market for a turbo due to my old one having metal shavings from crank bearings (cause of rebuild) go throughout the turbos oil lines and there wheel has a little play. I’m not really aiming for any power, just trying to keep it as oem as possible, but I can’t find a turbo that’s built for the stock ecu or find something that would be a standard replacement. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions
    • How's everyone going? Just a shout-out introducing myself. I'm James, I live on the north side of Brisbane. I bought an R33 that had been left to rot in someone's front yard for 14 years. Apparently, it has immobiliser/fuel issues. Long story short, it's suffering from a seized engine, plus whatever else turns up once it runs. The car is pretty good considering it sat for so long. It pretty much died after being imported. It has a bunch of Jap parts and a full Top Secret body kit. It's painted Fiat Turchese Festival, or aqua blue if you're not French. Another project to throw money at!
    • So the clockspring is responsible for the indicators cancelling on their own? I thought that was the function of that white thing in the center (any idea what it's called?)
    • Can you log IAT? Whilst WTA coolers have their place, doing any sort of sustained run is not one of them There are fixes that slow down the heat soak, like ice boxes, which don't last that long, and interchillers, which are fairly expensive, up grades to the WTA cooling radiator, which may require a bigger pump, and upgrades to the reservoir size,  and upgrades to the cooling fans, but, it all still heat soaks, and takes ages to come down in hot weather  For a turbo, that isn't locked into WTA like my PD blower is, can you not possibly swap to a nice air to air intercooler????, it would be better for sustained runs then, and have alot less things that could go wrong in my opinion
