I'm in two minds about getting the door glass tinted - the quarters and rear window were already done in Japan, the existing tint is very dark and presumably not exactly legal in Aus, so the remaining glass tint would be quite a bit lighter.

Sometimes I'd really prefer a bit more privacy, hence the idea of tinting the doors - this assuming I can get film that matches the existing tint in tone, etc.

Anyway, help me make my mind up! :D

Pros and Cons, people?

if u are into cruzing and stuff hells yea go tint. especially in summer.

but i have noticed when going for a 'spirited' drive at night, it is terrible, i have to have all the windows down just to see.

so i would reccommend getting it tinted, it would set a black car off.

It was impossible to get an exact match but i went with the closest, think its 20% tint, 30% is legal(sumthing like that, memory blank atm) but the difference is unoticeable from the outside unless ur right up againt the window peeping in with ur hands cupped.

Difference is in the tone of black, factory tint was abit more of a brown/red black tone, tint i used was more a green black tone. Go to a good tinter, tell em u want sumthing to match & they'll put a sheet up against ur window & u can decide from there on.

So glad i tinted mine, looks 100% better and sure is good for keeping the sun/glare out, giving me some privacy & not to mention the UV that'll fade ur interior over time.

if its matching tint you want why not just rip the japan stuff off and get it tinted again with the same stuff your using for the doors?

tinting not only makes it look a lot better but keeps the car cooler as well, you'll wonder how you went with out it once you get it done

My mate had really dark tint on his VP, and you get used to it after a while. At first it was hard tp see put pf at night, but then you learnt to. Looked so crap when he got yellow stickered for it tho. Now he has legal tint on, and it looks shit. Definately do it, as dark as ur rear windows. Makes the car look so much betterer...

i think you will find the back window is ok

its just 5's on the side windows are hard to see out of at night

and you cant really see your passenger mirrow for parking and what not without putting the iwndow down

Quite right what you say about visibility. The rear window visibility is not the best to begin (especially with the wing) with these cars let alone with the dark tint.

BTW, how bad are the reverse lights on the coupe - might as well not have any I reckon! Okay I'll stop complaining now :(

That tint looks pretty well matched alright, if I could definitely get mine to look like that (from the outside at least) then I reckon I'd go ahead and get it done. Can you recall the brand and type of tint you had done, or where it was done? Usually they give you a warranty card/brochure with all those details.

Cheers

I totally agree with you in that I have always had all of my cars tinted (if not already done).

You can't beat tinting for keeping the car cooler, for privacy and general interior protection.

This R34 is only a semi-daily driver, as I have kept my old bomb Impreza (bought off of eBay and a bit rough around the edges - but very reliable, lol) for daily duties, especially shopping and carting crap.

So tinting the 34 isn't so crucial in that regard.

Also, I'll be moving to Tassie soon so hot weather won't be an issue...

But I am leaning towards getting the doors tinted now - just as long as it looks indistinguishable form the outside.

Cheers

Got mine done at Current Trendz but thats in WA only. They do alot of tints for car shows etc. Find a good tinter in ur area, not the commercial ones line tint-a-car coz they usually only do legal tint, maybe do a search in the NSW forum. Like i said i think mine's a 20% n that was a pretty close match. I personally wouldn't go 5% like sum have suggested, u would hardly be able to see out of em at night & cops pick it up straight away. 20%'s just crossed the legal line but its not that noticeable unless they do a test, ive never been pulled up on it.

Ive had my car tinted at tint a car.. They did offer me 20% and 5% even though they are illegal... But they didnt offer the warranty with it.

Personally i think its best just to get the darkest legal tint you can get which is i think 35% (in W.A)... simply because skylines attract attention and it would be a pain to have to take it all off again and send your car to the pits to get the yellow sticker off.

    • Noted. Have noticed BMW are more 'high maintenance' for sure. They've attracted my attention as I think the used car prices seem reasonable vs other options, and the extra quality overall vs a commodore / camry / corolla or similar of the same vintage is appealing, especially the interior, and they are more on the sporty side whereas the others mentioned can be more cruising or economical A-to-B only.
    • Haha yeah I know, this is SAU after all, why are we talking about BMW's of all things!? I hear you on the 'don't have to worry about it' side of things. Having been fortunate enough to be have been able to buy a brand new motorbike or two...never really enjoyed them as much as I'd have liked as you worry so much about where you park it, will it get scratched, stolen, attempted theft, knocked over, etc...and yes dirty. Older less valuable bikes you can just go where you want and park it wherever and not really worry that much in comparison. And who cares if it gets dirty! Never owned a V8, and have had my eyes on VE / VF commodores for years but with their prices climbing so high, the M3 has come into focus more as prices are much closer than I've ever seen...is it a potential contender now?...of course need to factor in the S65 'maintenance' especially and like you said general M car 'tax'. One can dream anyway. But more on the reality front - did read the whole 330i thread as well and was a great read too, both threads enlightening as I've never even driven one of these cars! I do recall 330i didn't seem to have the same amount of issues for almost the same car (turbos and related differences notwithstanding)...perhaps down to getting it earlier in it's life so looked after better than the 335i? Perhaps so as your 130i has been good and quite similar, so finding a car that's been looked after well is the especially-crucial-BMW-first-step.
    • Nice. Dont worry about the time of not running. My current skyline hasn't run since I bought it. About 8 years ago.
    • It's also worth noting that I am heavily and unconditionally biased. I've had a lot of cars including some GTRs a fair while ago. I love my BMW's now a lot. They make no sense a lot of the time and the guys on here remind me regularly that I could get something else that does what I want better and cheaper. If you're going to take on an older BMW it's definitely a commitment. If you bail on it early you'll lose money and also the ability for it to put a smile on your face. Stick with it and it just gets better.  f**k I should get into advertising.
    • Careful with posts like that around here without the flame suit on @cobo_11! 😂😂 My 330i journal is on here too. That car was so good and super reliable. We still have a 130i in the family which is almost identical to the 330i and easier to find in manual. It has also been almost faultless over the 6 or so years in the family.  I used to want an M car a lot more than I do now but if I'm honest and without trying to sound like a wanker, I can get such good performance and handling out of my 335 without needing to worry about all the crap that goes along with M car ownership. I don't need to worry about my bearings or subframe issues or the cost of replacing brakes or suspension or whether it has been impeccably maintained. And I can leave it places and not get upset when it's always filthy.
