R35 Gtr At The Drag Strip In Perth "first Run Was A 11.6"

Recommended Posts

thats cool - how come then NIssan list "11.7s" as their time rather than lower..surely if Steve Jones hit that time, there must be professional nissan testers able to run quicker/similar times.

Nissan - like Porsche, tend to underrate their cars. Better to impress their customers than to dissapoint. It's not just car manufacturers that underrate their products. You'll find that the majority of 'Brand' name products in the electronic departments also underrate their products.

one thing with something like the r35, they have made it so a useless driver can be almost as fast as a good driver. as the fella that drove it round the track in england said, it was just so effortless to drive. they are basially making the car drive itself, LOL

People need to know Steve goes head to head with drivers like Jim Richards, Tony Longhurst and Ross Dunkerton in Targa's and the Dutton Rally all around Australia and on a good day beats them.

The people who make comments like above when they test drive cars well they should be going head to head with world class drivers not writing for some backwards magazine.

i can't see how a stock car can have much varience in drag times anyway? its got launch controll. all there doing is using that, plant the accelerator and hope for the best... its automatic, not as if your gona f**k the launch, or miss a gear.

Launch control lets it launch at a certain low RPM.

It would be better off with stickier tyres and a higher RPM launch wouldnt it?

Evos and GTRs for years have been doing High RPM launches, most V8 drag cars are all auto as well, get on the stall converter and launch, or with big powered turbo cars with autos, get on the transbrake dial up big boost and launch.

I suppose there cheating as well? The GTR is not an auto. So many idiots out there think its your plain old automatic gearbox that you can get in a Nissan Maxima or a Tiptronic like in a commodore/falcon. They have no concept of what a DSG gearbox is or how it works. If you miss the shift with your hands your not gonna achieve a perfect time, so its not like sitting there doing nothing.

I dont bother arguing with people over the new GTRs "auto" anymore - I just say yep, there shit and I wouldnt be seen driving one. The more people dislike the car the better - that will mean there will be more for me to choose from :)

i know what a dsg gearbox is... nissan's attempt at one sucks compared to audi/vw... atleast there dsg box changes quickly, unlike the nissan which might aswell be a tiptronic in a vx commodore. i don't think its cheating, i just can't see how they can improve on a time without doing anything to the car? how are you going to launch it at higher rpm? the computer will be set to its own thing. obviously nissan have set the launch rpm to what gets them the best time.. it already wheelspins at that anyway. your gonna have to be saying there shit for a long time yet, before you can trade in a starion on one.

but it is still essentially an auto. you don't have to try and slip the clutch off the line in just the right way, you don't have to time your hand and feet at the same time so that you don't end up grinding the gears or missing the gear altogether, like if you hit the gate going from second to third). if you can manage to grind or miss a gear in a car with a dsg gearbox then you must be the worlds biggest moron. you can change at the wrong rpm (which you can do just as easilly with a manual), or not hit the shifter hard enough to get it to change, but the chances of someone actually doing that are pretty small.

just like at the 911 turbo. the tiptronic box in that yeilds a 0-100 time 0.2 seconds quicker than the manual. the computer does all the work for you. all you have to do is keep your right foot buried into the carpet and tap the shifter a few times. i bet that if you took a group of 20 ordinary people to the track with a gtr and had them run, all using the traction control, and just telling them to change at the same rpm, they would all run very similar times, but if you then let the same group of people drive a different car that ran the same sort of time but was manual and had no launch/traction control you would find that the times varied greatly.

i actually think that the nissan box is good. the audi and vw ones aren't that good.

and the vx commodore never had tiptronic.

I assume by this comment that you've driven the R35 GTR then ? Cause from the guys who've actually got one over here there full of praises for the R35's gearbox.

haha this is funny. Because you've driven an R35 GT-R so you can comment?

In R-mode the GT-R will shift in 0.2 seconds every time. Get your facts straight before you comment, you're embarrassing yourself.

I drive an Audi fitted with a DSG gearbox.

It is brilliant and I imagine the GTR one will be as good or better.

DSG is not an auto. It is a manual gearbox with auto control of the clutches whereas a Tiptronic like in Falcons etc are auto boxes with an add on manual type control function.

There is no way to crunch a DSG gearbox as when you're in first gear second is selected ready to swap clutches.

Changes happen so fast that the exhaust pops on the change up :D

DSG IMHO is the future as the DSG equiped car is faster in a straight line than the manual equiv.

And in kickdown mode there's no contest. My car will kick down from sixth to say second or third in an instant while a manual driver is still hunting a gear and matching revs.

Chris, Once your R35 arrives you'll be able to give us a factual comparison between the two gearboxes. Sometime in mid-2009 :D

unfortunetly no, i haven't driven one, but i was in japan for the release. just hearing the car change gears sounds slow, perhaps it wasn't in r-mode? a vw golf gti with a dsg box changes in 8milliseconds according to a few sites, which seems a little too keen, i never said there shit, or that the car is shit, they could have done better. i imagine most of the aftermarket company's will be able to alter the program, and change the gear change timing, etc, as many other company's do for the euro's. yes i know its not a f**kin auto, but its more a auto then a manual. getting back on topic, 11.6 is bloody fast for a stock factory car.

    • Bit of an update to this one. Having some issues on the dyno that held us back (boost spiking) and I want to pass some info over you guys and see what you think is wrong with my setup. The current readout on this dyno is 462rwkw on a low reading dyno so keep in mind it is a real world 500rwkw setup on a hub dyno. Don't read into the power figure too much as a sign of the issue. The short and curly of it is: 2.8 Litre Racepace build RB25 NEO N/A Head with VCT (internally standard however ) Borgwarner EFR 8474  Turbosmart 50mm Straight Gate + Mac valve 6Boost Manifold 4" dump to full 4" exhaust (nil restrictions) Wastegate plumbed back in and all angles in the exhaust system are acceptable and not too sharp. GFB SV52 BOV in cooler piping  Turbosmart BOV in EFR Housing   The issue we are having is it comes onto full boost for example at 4000rpm and spikes to 24/25psi, before dropping down to 17psi before slowly rising back up to the target boost of 23psi. It was extremely uncontrollable and the tuner actually had to ramp in boost progrssively with each 1000rpm on each boost setting we selected to try and reduce the amount of spiking. Sometimes we would see a drop of 10psi from the peak at the beginning of the run, to the low, until it took the next 500-1000rpm to stabilise back up to the target boost. The tuner is pretty confident that the straight gate is just a poorly designed product and leaks too much boost upon cracking the gate open and theres no way to fix it other than going to a poppet valve. He's also confient theres no ignition breakdown or floating valves. The fueling is extremely stable as well. Turbo speed is somewhere around the 109,000rpm area. The spanner in the works for me is that prior to this Borgwarner and StraightGate, the car was tuned on -5 twins at a diferent tuner, and he also had issues controlling the boost with it spiking around the same rpm range, so to me this sounds like the same issue and it can't be anything on the turbo side as this was all changed and I think the behaviour is extremely similar, if not the same. We also removed the mac valve and did a run on wastegate pressure and it still spiked and had the same behaviour. My thoughts on possibilities are: Boost Leak VCT Cam Gear isn't reliably activating consistently - (On this however, we did a run with the VCT disabled and the boost still spiked) Turbosmart BOV is not handling the boost? However this seems unlikely to not be able to handle 20psi. I have a couple of logs that I can't make sense of if anybody knows how to read them and can obtain further logs of other parameters if they are not enough, happy to pay for anyones time. The dyno readout with the power figure is the most recent last week. The other picture is from two weeks prior to that where we couldn't break 400kw (we removed the cat), however the issue of the boost control persisted. @Lithium @Piggaz @burn4005 @GTSBoy @discopotato03 I've tagged those that were quite active in recent pages here, no disrespect to those that know turbos well but I missed tagging. Cheers
    • I recently purchased a 2018 Infiniti Q60, which has an SD card navigation map. I can see my system has options for real time traffic updates etc, and am wondering if there is something I can purchase to get this working? I can see there are at least updated maps for USA and Canada, but nothing for Australia. Surely Infiniti took changing road systems and city expansions into account when they decided to use an inbuilt navigation over Android Auto/Apple Car Play, or are we doomed to drive on streets that don't exist in the navigation system if you drive to a new area?
    • Luckily I didn't put in etch primer as I just found out it's not compatible with my body filler lol. Also just need to sand the panel anywhere between 150-400 grit so I'm in the clear there. It does say to not apply to soft old paint, I assume that means paint that is flaking, peeling, etc
    • @dbm7 and @GTSBoy thank you both very much! will give that a shot!
