hmm this is news to me, i bought my car with a carbon fibre bonnet and have had cops next to me and not even look twice....

well consider yourself lucky. It is a defect as when carbon fiber is smashed it has a shattering affect. Which if you can image shattered carbon to pedestrians is quite hazerdous.

My mate was pulled over once and they made him pop his bonnet, has a fmic, bov exposed pod etc.

The cop asked him if it was an intercooler, he said, uhh that's a radiator. Got off scott free :(

Not every cop knows what they're looking at and what's defectable

The TMU we have here in Victoria are trained to see what's legal and what's not as far as I'm aware. So they'll bust you easily for the bov and cooler. They'll probably just pull you over to check on them.

From what I know, The carbonfibre bonnet needs a metal core, I.e basically has the same strength as a normal bonnet so on impact the car crumples like it should to resist injury to you, peds and other drivers/cars

Now we all know skylines have shit crumple zones and dont pass crash tests, more often than not if u crash it hard enough u'll have half a engine crushing your legs.

Hence why they are not allowed into the US.

The main reason why they are illegal is because fibreglass shatters on impact, carbon fibre does only on seriously hard impacts.. its almost or is (im not quite sure) as strong as some metals, but does not share its crumple abilities. Basically if youve got a fibreglass bonnet with carbonfibre shit will go everywhere..

On this point, if your bonnet is actually plastic and has carbon top layer, is this legal?

i have a carbon fiber bonnet and took it to a licencing centre they told me that your car has to be made before 1995 to get a permit, so mine being a 96 model they couldn't give me one, but not all cops in WA no the rules so i have got away with it so far but it only takes one cop to realise and bam yellow for me.

oh, so I guess it's fair to assume that Victorian police are trained to a higher standard than our newsouthwhelschmen?:)

How about a bonnet which usus the factory steel bracing, but has a carbon fibre skin? (although for the weight difference it would make your better off just taking a shit before you leave)
