Hey, ive noticed for a while now..that when i turn,

i hear some kind of knock sound coming from suspension, or steering side....

not sure wer exactly is it coming from..but yeah..

and turning both ways i hear it...

its not on full-lock and usually i only really notice around like 10-30k's

usually only turning lik a turn...

so i asked a tech. at work he said its probl. my steering rack bolts..

the ones that hold it..

he said those always come lose...

so my next question is...which bolts are these???anyone got a picture??

i look on both front wheel sides, and noice my tyres come close to the upper control arm..could i be hitting these?i only got 245/45/R17...so yeah

and anymore ideas?

suspension arms?bushes?power steeering pump...etc..

Do you have an oil cooler or power steering cooler?

I busted a bracket in my oil cooler lines on a track day and the one of the lines was rubbing on a steering part as I turned at certain turns.

easy fix though, hope yours is all good mate, and try looking for something rubbing, resting on the steering somewhere

Possibly the diff. I had a similar problem with my 180sx. I thought it was steering related, and it sounded very similar to the description that you have given to your problem. Ended up changing the diff (to a 1.5way), as I had planned to anyway, and since then it hasn't been a problem.

have you hit any big potholes or anything lately?

i have 20's and i have a bees willy distance between my tyre and top of strut.

going back a month ago i would turn and hear a knock knock knocking sound. jacked up drvers front and we gave the wheel a spin. heard a slight rubbing sound and discovered it was touching strut in certain spots on tyre. looked at the tyre and noticed lumps in it!.

got a new tyre chucked the wheel on to discover was still rubbing in some spots!

my stub axel must be bent!

just jack up and do these checks and you might discover you have this problem...

get it fix, i ground a bit of the strut back about 1mm - 2mm, until i can get it fixed, and i am changing my struts/suspension gear anyways.

grinding is not advised unless you are going to change it in the near future. getting your stub axel fixed isnt a big job.

nope..no of the above..

i had my diff oil changed like 5,000k's ago...

and i dont have an oil cooler or pwr-steering cooler yet anywayz...

so yeah

and i havent hit any kerbs or gone into any pot holes either..

but i have notice it sound similar to wen the roads get really bumpy...but sound more like my shocks, compared to a knock sound...

the only suspension mods i got are...

kyb adjustable damper shocks + coils..set to level 1...

and front whiteline adjustable caster bearing bushes...

but the roads here are pretty crap..like really bumpy

maby somethin do with my front suspension or steering..

or something close to those lines..

?????

Check the 4 main bolts that hold the front subframe to the chassis, they need to be super tight or can cause a knock on first turn in as the frame moves on the chassis.

hope that helps

wer abouts are these bolts????

anyone got a picture??

its your tierod ends on the end of your steering rack, well its a good possibility as i changed mine yesterday , they were stuffed and made knocking sounds when i turned in reverse and striaghtend up etc

Jack up your car and put the front wheels on stands. Riggle the front wheels with your hands left and right. also from the top and bottom. if you feel any play get someone to have a look underneath. check swaybar links, tie rods, ball joints, etc. Thats the basics =)

well my wheel felt fine..

and didnt hit any thing wen be spin around or tuned...

i saw my front swaybar bushes need replacing..coz ther cracked..lol

could this be the sound im hearing?

  • 1 month later...
  • 4 weeks later...
got a new whiteline front extra heavy duty swaybar..

wit new d-link bushes..

sound is still there..

im think engine mounts maybe???

any ideas?

Does it make the sound when you start driving it straight away???

I used to get a knocking noise from the front end (doesn't matter if i was turning because its the car going up and down), changed my upper control arm to a second hand one stop the clunking, now i got a squeaking noise which i believe is worse.

Grab the frame of the car at the tyre well, and bounce the car up and down, do to both sides, if its making the noise, get someone to try pin point the noise while it is bouncing. I did this to mine, my bushes are stuffed on the arm, been like that since October.
