Hey ive done a search on upgrading my RB20's fuel pump and come up with a few mentions of the bosch 040 and 044.

I understand these are internal pumps fitting the same position as the std pump.

Im not too familiar with their flow capabilities and what is best for my application.

what other suggestions would you guys have for around 200 - 220rwkw RB20? and whats the best type of regulator to get in combination with this setup?

Whats the deal with 2nd hand fuel pumps, an R32 GTR pump could be over 10 years old. For the sake of an extra few $$$ you can have a new one.

If you shop around you can have a Bosch 040 for as low as $325, its new, flows more, and still fits in the std location with a bit of a tweak. Are the GTR/Z32 ones any easier to install?

to be honest i dont want to skimp on my fuel supply so i dont mind going new - ie bosch.

but exactly what is it that i need to modify to fit? i was planning on doing it myself.

and if 044 is over kill. what would you recomend from the bosch series?

I got mine done at the workshop so i am not able to talk you through it. There is a bit involved and insulating it against noise is a good idea as well.

Bosch has a variety of pumps that will do the job. Below is a quote from Sydneykid some time ago.

*GTST pump is 135 litres per hour and supports 300 bhp at standard pressure  

*GTR pump is 190 litres per hour and supports 420 bhp at standard pressure  

*Bosch 910 pump is 200 litres per hour and supports 450 bhp at 73.5 PSI # 0 580 254 910  

*Bosch 975 pump is 228 litres per hour and supports 500 bhp at 73.5 PSI # 0 580 254 975  

*Bosch 984 pump is 228 litres per hour and supports 500 bhp at 73.5 PSI # 0 580 254 984  

*Bosch 044 pump is 330 litres per hour and supports 730 bhp at 73.5 PSI # 0 580 254 044  

*Bosch 040 pump is 235 litres per hour and supports 520 bhp at 73.5 PSI # 0 580 254 040

I just installed a Bosch 910 yesterday in mine (see attached photo).. its not a direct swap into the standard bracket but it fits.. I managed to wedge it in there ok.. needs a bit of dicking around to hook up the feeder (u can see i had to rig a bit of hose) - but its all working fine and sucking from the correct angle. Only took an hour or so - hardest part is just getting the tank open (socket extender and hammer worked fine)

Don't worry about the duct tape :(.. it was pretty much sitting in there ok (and that chunky hose helps wedge it in place), that was for extra support. A proper large hose clamp, or even some wire should hold it locked in position if u are worried about it coming loose.

Noise, yes, when you turn over the ignition u can here it sucking a lot more obviously, but it doesn't bother me at all

After looking at that 910 pic I'm thinking of trying to put my 044 in again myself. I have a couple of questions though :(

When you mount the pump internally, it needs some sort of screen doesn't it? Where can you get these from? I am guessing you don't want to use any old screen that will disolve in fuel over time, and it needs to fit properly over the fuel line pickup.

Also, how do you get the fuel pump out of the tank? A long time ago when I first attempted this mod, I took the big plastic cap off my tank and then couldn't figure out where the pump mounted. I since found out that it's at the bottom of the metal bracket I can see in that pic, but where is it affixed to at the top?

If you can see at the bottom of my dodgy photo, I have simply reattached the existing screen from the old pump (which was very clean), using a small bit of hose as a connector.

There is a plastic tab that locks the angle in place of the screen in the stock pump which kind of gets in the way. I simply cut that off, and over the top of that sheathed a small piece of hose and angled it per the stock pump setup. Once you get it out, it all makes sense.

This is a very poor photo.. but this is a shot looking inside. The top left white plastic you can see is where the metal bracket slides into and sets the correct angle.

Thanks for the info Pred, if I have enough energy and enthusiasm after I put my turbo back on on Wednesday, I'll give it another go.

Out of interest, how did you get the plastic cap off the tank? I ended up using a screwdriver and hammer to punch it off, but I ended up putting a few dings in the cap. I would rather remove it in a less damaging way next time.

I just bought one before ;)... $3.20 from Repco, but most places that stock standard car bits should have those sorts of clamps

Removing the tank lid i used a blunt socket extender i had and hammer, as per rev210 i think suggestion in another thread. It got it off with only minimal damage to the lid and maybe 15 mins work. After that i greased the opening - made it so much easier to get back on.

There is a proper tool to remove it, but could be hard to track down - 200sx has the same setup.

    • Diagnosing with and without is mostly the same. You need to know, as Duncan asked, and what conditions. Car hot, cold, idling, driving, if while driving what rpms, is when you're varying, or is it when held constant.   From there it's understanding what can be causing it. Starting with pretending all of the sensors are correct. Which means if it's going rich, why would it be thinking more air is going in than it is, and under what conditions. So things like if only when under boost, it could be be a loose intake piping joint. It's just understanding the system, and understanding when/how the problem occurs, and then if it's only occuring in specific scenarios, what can be causing it.   ECU specifically, if it's aftermarket, it'll have software you can use, for the Skylines on factory ECU, there is Nissan Consult you can use. Most ECUs have a way to get data from them.
    • How do you go about diagnosing ecu's that don't have data logging, is it more experience at that point and just trying out things that you think will fix the issue?
    • Stock O2 are basically useless beyond anything at stoich. Any misfire will also be seen as lean. The stock O2 also read a collective exhaust gas volume, not each cylinder. Sputtering and missing means not each cycle is firing, and some are. Which means even if rich, as shit, on cylinders as they miss, they'll read lean, but the cylinders that did fire will read rich, and combined, well, they can read anything from rich to lean.   Start with the basics before even going looking at sensor values.   Edit: I say the above, and that's coming from the guy with a few thousand dollars worth of scan tools sitting right beside me right now that I use frequently for my job.
    • I just finished up a manual swap and I have a 1999 S2 AWD automatic in my garage, depending on where you are located. I'm in the the midwest of the US.
    • I’ve heard it can be done, you need to redrill the holes where they bolt to the chassis and apart from that they are the same. I’ve never done it or know anyone personally that has, it’s just something I’ve heard
