Hey all,

I'm seriously considering importing a 1989 model R32 GTS-T as they look very appealing price wise, and appear to offer great value for money :D

Has anyone imported a 15+ year old car using the new scheme? Any problems or comments?

I'm a bit sceptical though about importing a 15 year old car which only has 80-120km's on it.. and also the general condition of a 15 year old turbo RWD skyline :D Think drift.. etc etc

Any comments are welcome, thanks.

under the 15 year old you are allowed to import fully modified cars. This makes them great value. 89 GTR with alot of mods will be about $20-25.

LOL you've got your prices wrong there.

For a decent GTR that hasnt been in an accident your looking at around $18,000-$20,000

For a modded one they go upto $30,000

15 year old cars you do not need to take the mods off. That is for only cars under the compilance scheme.

$14,000 is correct for standard car done about 100-150k. (500,000 yen fob.)

Clean tidy standard 89 versions sell for about 850,000 yen fob which will be about $19-20 on the road.

take the FOB (free on board) cost say 500000 yen FOB

divide by exchange rate of about 75 yen/Au$

$6666 au

multiple by 15% import duty

$7665

add freight about $1300 plus other custom charges

that totals about $1800

add together

$9465 total so far

add 10% GST

$10411

that is the total so far landed in australia

add minor mods (intrusion bars seat belts etc) $1200

plus tyres $800 225/50/16

total $12411

plus rego

in queensland that would be less than $14000 total on the road.

i have a 95 gtst which I imported 6 months ago

paided 400000 fob plus additional $2200 for compliance plus added new set of 18's wheels plus all the other costs above.

It owes me $13,700 plus rego.

But be aware, if you by a cheap car, you get what you pay for.

15 year old cars you do not need to take the mods off. That is for only cars under the compilance scheme.

Yep this is true, except the car still has to go through rego inspection for its respective state - so it still has to comply to certain formalities....things like aftermarket exhausts may have to come off but otherwise all other mods would be fine.

89 GTR's R a bargain...couple of mnths ago there was a 32 with a fully tuned N1 R33 Race engine going for something like $25-30 k. The engine alone would have been $8-10k without the tuning. So you pretty much get a worked race car landed here plus the on road costs. Still - the age is a bit of a worry.

So the 15yr old cars don't have to be complianced?

Joel, you still have to comply with ADRs, stuff like intrusion bars, seat belts, child restraints, ULP fuel thingy, tyres etc - but you dont have to buy compliance plates and dont have those associated costs.

In ACT I talked to the motor registry about what would need to be changed, and they advised me the only modification needed would be rear child point restraints and a high level brake light (in the middle of the rear window at the bottom)... they didnt even seem to care about side intrusion bars etc, but thats just for act not sure on other states.

All states have their own rules regarding 15 year old imports, but generaly speaking the car will have to meet ADR's for it's year of build .. this should cost around $800 to $1,500 depending on the requirements in your state and how much of the work you do yourself.

You would have to be VERY lucky to get a 1989 model GTR for 500,000 yen FOB these days, prices have increased heaps with the recent surge of Australians buying them.

Current prices start from around 700,000 yen FOB for somethingn with higher km's, accident repair history, scruffy interior, etc.. (around $14,500 landed plus compliance and rego)

If you want something in exceptional condition with genuine low km's, heavily modified, etc. then you will need to spend anything from 1,000,000 yen to more than 2,000,000 yen FOB (around $19,500 to over $35,000 landed plus compliance and rego)

.. almost forgot - modified cars are allowed under the 15 year old rules at this stage but they still have to meet your local laws for registration (ride height, exhaust volume, etc..) ... some parts may have to be removed prior to registration but at least they will not have to be destroyed like later model cars under the SEVS scheme.

StraightSix, you are right, but what people are doing is buying them now and storing them in Japan till Jan next year (when they become eligible).

most importers are offering free storage...or you can pay a bit extra for covered storage.

I see. Was getting a little worried here, first I hear about an R32 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, then people here are talking about buying 15-year-old R32s already, and I'd been telling everyone August next year was the magic number . . . by the way what was the R33 start date, for the GTS-t? They preceded the R33 GT-R by a couple years did they not?
