some_cs_student
Hi, I'm looking for a half-decent helmet for the occasional track event, I've had a look at Kawasaki motors on Nepean Hwy Moorabbin but there cheapest helmets were $300 and the one that fitted well was $350. Just wondering if anyone happens to know a place that sells helmets pretty cheap in either Bentleigh/Moorabbin area, and are hopefully open Saturdays or afterhours. Or anywhere near Richmond or Bunley area, anywhere near work where I can slip out during lunch is good I'm aiming to spend less than $200 if I can, I will consider buying second hand if I see a good helmet Also, are there any particular standards I need to look out for? I've heard of snell (spelling?) and ADR standards for track events, I believe the helmet can meet *either*. The helmet will be used for the occasional track event, as in once every 3-6 months so I don't think I need a really high quality helmet, I just want something decent. EDIT: Opinions on what a reasonable price is for a helmet would be nice as well Regards, Gareth Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/208535-places-that-sell-helmets-in-south-eastern-suburbs-bentleighmoorabbin-areas-or-richmondburnley-area/ Share on other sites

sloutch
Gareth, why don't you try the motorbike shops along elizabeth street in the city? They give reasonably good deals. I've seen helmets being sold for less than $200 there. No point getting used helmets. Imagine someone else's sweat will be on your head when YOU sweat... Well obviously I didn't know those shops existed . Excellent idea, I'll slip out during lunchtime next week and see whats available in my budget category I should also check if they've got that quality 5.1 brake fluid, like the Motul RBF600 or Lucas RBF600 racing fluid, maybe I can get a deal on them The place I checked was $30/500ml for Motul so a little expensive. According to the CAMS apparel info I found, helmets must match any of: AS1698 - Australian standard Snell SA95, SA2000, SA2005 - USA standard SFI Spec 31.1, 31.2, 31.1A, 31.2A - USA standard SFI Spec 24.1 - see Note (i)(d) - USA standard E22 (with 03, 04 or 05 amendments) - European standard BS 6658-85 Type A and A/FR (incl. amendments) - British standard 8860-2004 - FIA standard So I think buying a motorcycle helmet should match one or more of these and I'll be fine Thanks for the good ideas so far! Try and get there at a weekend as the selection is plentiful Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/208535-places-that-sell-helmets-in-south-eastern-suburbs-bentleighmoorabbin-areas-or-richmondburnley-area/#findComment-3688584 Share on other sites
robbieraver
revolution race gear, nunawading, they know what there talking about, ive done lots of track days on bikes and cars, with co drivers, and one thing i can say is, bike helmets are great for when your in the car alone but if you have a co driver/instructor with you open face is the way to go, you cant hear what they say with full face helmet. As long as you see that silver sticker with 3 or 4 ticks on it, that'll be fine Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/208535-places-that-sell-helmets-in-south-eastern-suburbs-bentleighmoorabbin-areas-or-richmondburnley-area/#findComment-3690850 Share on other sites

Adz
In morabin you should check out Meridian Motorsport. One thing you should ask yourself when you buy a helmet. How much is your head worth? R31Nismoid
Yeah, spend the $$ on a really good one. Often they are 1. Lighter 2. Cooler 3. Better visors etc. All things that factor to a comfy helmet as some of the cheap ones, after 30mins, feel like a brick on your head Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/208535-places-that-sell-helmets-in-south-eastern-suburbs-bentleighmoorabbin-areas-or-richmondburnley-area/#findComment-3691796 Share on other sites
Jetdat
you need to decide what activities you will be doing, how long these activities require you to have your helmet on, and how often you will be doing these activities. if you are only gonna be doing a couple of quarter mile runs a year no need for big $$$ helmets as you only have the helmet on for short amount of time. on the other end of the scale, if you will be wearing your helmet for hours at a time like bike riding, go for big $$$. some_cs_student
Thanks for all the replies I'll try and check some of those places out. I will be wearing the helmet a bit but not that much, 20mins at a time (at least) on the 15th March, but for most of the day Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/208535-places-that-sell-helmets-in-south-eastern-suburbs-bentleighmoorabbin-areas-or-richmondburnley-area/#findComment-3694000 Share on other sites
