Hey ACT gang,

I've just ordered one of JustJaps turboback exhausts which should arrive in a couple of days.

I just have a question about the removal of the standard dump pipe etc.

- What is the general process for getting at the dump pipe? I assume you have to remove all the heatshields around the turbo.

- Is there anything I should becareful of in that area when removing the dump? I'll be reusing the o2 sensor, so i'll have that off already.

I realise that the JustJap exhaust might be a bit loud, but at the moment, my Kakimoto catback just doesn't cut it for me.

haha, good luck with the exhaust sensor and the O2 sensor if they have never been removed. I had to pay a workshop to remove them they were so ridiculously tight.

I took everything from the cat back off in one go then the dump and front together. Heat shields off first from memory then the 6 bolts attached to the dump (2 from bottom, 3 from top and 1 from either side) Watch out though, they are very brittle, would recommend replacing them when you put on the new exhaust.

What kind of exhaust btw?

Thanks for the info Baconer,

The exhaust currently on is a Kakimoto catback, the exhaust coming is a JustJap Hyperflow. I know its going to be loud (possibly overly loud), but this is easily changed by going to a classy oval muffler instead of a cannon. I need to get my burble, the Kakimoto is very quiet (nearly stock sounding).

So far i've removed the heat shield and have the dump soaking in WD40, which i'll also resoak tomorrow night.

Does any one know the thread depth, pitch and size of the bolts going into the turbo? I will try to pick some up but if i can't find any, i may run the risk...

I got no fkin idea bout the details on a GTST, but multiple applications of WD40, or what eva penetrator your using is the first thing. As Alex said, the fact the gears been heat cycled so often can make it a bitch... *cough shuffle* nothing like a GTR's dumps though... I almost stabbed a house mate over that.. jk.. kinda.

sfrizza... are you ReACT sfrizza by any chance?

Always wondered... ain't sfrizza's those extra long roiling papers? :);)

Yes, REACT sfrizza is me, one and same.... What's your username?

I could only imagine the dumps on a GTR... However, after taking a closer look at the dump, its near identical to the WRX dump on just on the opposite side and one more bolt. I'll keep applying the WD40 to soak into it thats for sure!

forgot about the wd40, i used about 3/4 of a can of that stuff haha.

And it didnt help? It was that last 1/4 you shoulda used!

Oh, no real OzRotary fame, just a JSR / RICE RACING / 13B BP TT / Toms silver arrow groupie :);)

I thought maybe with teh name, you prefere the longer papers... canberra style hahaha

Haha, no longer papers here..

Lol, well aren't you just the groupie now GeeTR! - Haven't seen RiceSP online in ages.............

Baconer, so far i've soaked the studs twice tonight about 1/4 to 1/2 a can of WD40... I'll do another two tomorrow night and see how we go. Hopefully the exhaust actually turns up tomorrow, I have no idea whether its been even shipped out yet... Bl**dy hope it has!!!

haha should be enough, i soaked mine, waited 20 mins then another soaking, 1 hour later they came off fairly easily. Are you doing this on the ground or in a workshop?

Also once you get the cat-back sections off make sure you rev the car for shits and giggles

Hhahaha well i smoked out all of Monaro Hwy this morning because of the WD40 soaking on the turbo exhaust housing / dump flange.... OOPS!

If you only left yours for an hour, hopefully I should be right then. Here's praying I don't snap any bolts..

As for doing it on the ground or in a workshop... I wish i had the luxury, i've already done 10 subaru liberty gearboxes on the ground, no point in stopping just for an exhaust..

Oh and if i get the catback section off first and its still not too late, bloody oath I'll give it a quick squirt...

Well I got her all done Thursday night. Its an extremely well built exhaust, the quality of the welds is very very good.

As for the sound... it sounds awesome! I have my RB burble back (it was bad having my N/A R31 sounding louder than my R33)...

All the bolts came off with ease. Putting the dump back on could have been better, the 2 middle bolts on the 6 bolt turbo flange didn't want to tighten all the way up (potentially). I had to much fear of snapping them so i didn't push my luck. Having said that, it isn't leaking at all

Overall, very happy

I have done this numerous times its a fiddly job but not to hard, soak all nuts and bolts in penetrate so as not to snap any while getting them off. You will find that some of the turbo nuts are more then likely loose any ways.

I was worried that the dump was going to be the hardest to remove, but it turns out that the mid section to back section was the hardest to do... Trying to get the exhaust in the hangers correctly at the same time as doing up the 4 bolt flange on the JJR pipe was just plain annoying... Needed a second set of hands to hold it all steady! But got there in the end.

    • See my post here If you put the Haltech in, you won't have to worry about any of that. And, in case you're worrying about my lack of credentials in doing your exact swap, I put a Neo in an R32. There has never been a stock boost solenoid near my car and the Neo's ECU has never cared. Nor should it, because it is electronically impossible for it to care.
    • That's 100% wrong. Did you wire in the boost sensor? If you did not, then that is 101% your answer. Neo ECUs do suck a bit.
    • Hello, I'm trying to make this thread basically the thread with all the answers to common questions regarding specifically the RB20 DE NEO + T engine, that comes in the R34. Answers will and only should be provided by those who have done this conversion or actually have some relevant real life experience please. Please feel free to ask questions in the comments if you have any so other members can answer. I feel like this thread is really needed, especially with more Americans buying (unknowingly going to regret it too) rb20 neo r34s. My first question being - What do you guys use for tuning? I have purchased a haltech elite 2500 Plug and play kit for the rb25det NEO because the ecu plug is the same, but I am unsure if any of the pins would need to be repined to match. Second question that I see asked very often - After this conversion, did you install the boost solenoid/ actuator? I see many people doing a + T setup on their rb20 NEOs while running stock RB25DET NEO ECUs with no tune. I am wondering how they are going about doing that and consistently abusing the car because many of these people have had these untuned setups running for a very long time. That was my original plan, but my engine cuts out at 5 psi of boost using the stock ecu with no tune and no boost solenoid/actuator.
