Hey all,

In the process of buying some slotted rotors, for obvious reasons...anyway, my stock rotors squeak like a bit**! so before I go buy that anti squeak fluid stuff, I wanna check whether it may be easier just to leave it until the new rotors go on.

The pads were replaced 8 weeks ago, and rotors machined...started squeaking abt 3 weeks ago. performance is still great, but the noise the little b**&ards make is REALLY getting to me.

I recently put 4000 series dba slotted rotors on mine with new pads and the rears still have the loudest, most annoying squeak/squeal. You would never have guessed that I had just spent a grand on the brakes. It sounds like I have no meat left on the pads at all, it is really starting to bug me. I am going to try some anit squeal stuff soon.

hey zaki is it squeakin when u are not applying brake ? i have that problem sumone suggested that i have to rebuild my calipers, but no money right now for that. As for squeal when u brake, usually high performance pads squeal heaps, i kind of like it :)

I used the standard R33 GTS-T S1 rotors for around 15,000km with absolutely no squeal (Bendix Ultimate pads) and i've now put 5,000km on the new DBA 4000 Series Slotted rotors with Bendix Ultimate pads and don't get any squeal.

Actually now that i think of it i do get squeal... after i have washed my car and i reverse down the driveway for the very first time, but after 30m of that its 100% no squeal at any time (not even at a trackday).

i never had squeak at all with my slotted/drilled rotors. Now its started its pretty damn annoying.. could have something to do with alignment as my alignment has been thrown right out now that my tierod is bent..

once its back on the road gotta track down that squeak - 'cause **** its loud.. my pushbike does it too from the brakes on that too and that is annoying as well !

i think it is to do with moisture.. when my car was garaged never a problem.. now i've moved and its outside and condensation forms overnight - now the squeak has begun

Brake squeal is one of those luck of the draw things. Some pads will tend to squeal more than others, but there will always be some people that always get squeal and some that never do with any pad you care to mention. However there is no one with Ultimate pads that doesn't get dust :D

I don't think rebuilding calipers will help with squeal at all, all that will do is provide a more linear amount of pressure on the brake when it is applied, and possibly stop the pads from touching on the disc when in motion. It depends on where the stickiness in the piston lies.

If you want to try a cheapass rebuild, move the piston in and out a few times. To do this pull the caliper off the hub and push the pistons back. Then pump the pedal a couple of times to push them out again (be careful, not too far out!) and push them back in again. I did that with mine along with a fluid flush and the brakes feel like brand new again.

Slots and holes in your rotors will help prevent squeal, but they may not cure it. Again it comes back to the luck of the draw.

Jim, rebuilding the caliper is an unusual way of fixing a squeal... but if the pads are constantly rubbing on the rotor even when your foot is nowhere near the brake pedal?

That was my problem, always rubbing, now after rebuilt calipers, no issue with pads constantly rubbing on the rotors. Like you said stops the pads from constantly touching the discs when in motion.

    • From the pictures I have when doing the job the flywheel is the same diameter, I don't think they're playing weird tricks like putting weights at the outer diameter to increase flywheel inertia or anything like that. The OEM flywheel is definitely heavier, but it's not a huge difference. Quoted weight savings of the clutch is 2 kg so I can't imagine the flywheel being lighter than ~7 kg. Kind of regret not weighing it before the clutch went into the car but as far as driveability goes I have no complaints.
    • HKS trigger kit should be very easy to integrate with a Link. It's a 36-2 crank trigger. Hard part is finding the motivation to take off the timing belt and everything on the front of the engine to install it. You also need to cut out a hole in the oil pump housing so the sensor can read the trigger wheel. Changing out the cam sensor for a 24 tooth setup is probably good enough but as others have mentioned depending on what underlying assumptions are changed it becomes more of a problem. Reading the crank state off of the cam is an abstraction that works in the general case, but if you have an edge case it makes less and less sense. There is a GTX2860 gen 2 that can take a compact 5 bolt housing so it's direct bolt on but I'm not 100% sure of what's involved. Peak compressor efficiency drops off a bit on these turbos vs -5s, 77% vs 73% but you get way, way wider region of operation. The -5s have a really strange surge line in their compressor map that is all over the place. If you think the hot side on the -5s aren't open enough you can try the Tomei T550B turbos which a local tuner seems to be happy with:
