hey guys,

just spent the last hour reading about all the cars that have been stolen recently, its so crazy, its got me so paranoid now, even though i have a decent alarm with a kill switch i was wondering if anyone uses a detachable steering wheel, i have seen them in shops but was wondering if this is any good in regards to stoping crims stealing your car....

if you have a decent alarm then foget the removable wheel as a theft detterent. get comprehensive insurance. it's the ONLY way to have yourself properly protected.

i totally agree, but i just wanted to know the pro's and con's of detachable steering wheels, i know they have a quick release button, but has anyone actually used one? i mean tried and tested, and are they easy for crims to get around? im thinking like the movie gone in 60 seconds, unscrew the boss kit and chunk on there own steering wheel... lol

Hmm... I've thought about one. Just put in another kill switch.

I thought about getting one whilst having it parked at work. The thing is, they'll come back tomorrow armed with a steering wheel..

Still... I think its probably a reasonable investment. Remember it will stick out that extra bit too...

yes I have one in a couple of cars purely because with the full racing seat and roll cage it's hard to get in and out of the car with the wheel in place. but for purely street use be aware they are illegal, are easily spotted and for anti theft they are easily defeated. if they have a wheel with one half of the quick release attached they can just pop a wheel on and away they go. or even if they just have a bare wheel with them, no boss, they can just unbolt the part of the quick release that is there, and bolt on their wheel. if you need one for access reasons, or need the wheel spaced closer to you, they are a great idea. but as an anti theft device I think not very good. full insurance is the only fool proof way to safeguard your car.

all you need is an adjustable spanner or a monkey wrench to steer in the absence of a steering wheel. They're also great for smashing in windows to get to said steeringwheel-less car.

If they really want your car, they'll find a way to take it.

Agreed, The steering wheel isn't going to stop them. There are plenty of options.

Alarms, Kill switches, comprehensive insurance, even this little beauty's http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/Re...Ca-t200630.html !

you're a monkey wrench.

I guess that's why they call him Funky Monkey :D

From what I've read, most immobilisers are so good these days that they're very difficult to get around. That was in the context of factory immobilisers, but aftermarket ones aren't that bad either.

This is why most car thieves are either carjacking people, or towing the vehicles away.

A removable steering wheel isn't going to protect your car in either situation.

And are you going to carry your wheel around as you go to the shops? Using a detachable wheel as a security measure will be like detachable head unit face plates - thieves will still smash their way in, and check the glovebox / under the seat / boot to see where you stashed it because they know you're probably too lazy to lug it around.

i just thought about chucking the wheel it into my back pack which i always carry to work anyways, my wheel is a small momo which would easily fit, its just parking while im at work which bothers me, but thinking about it logically having a detachable wheel propably wouldnt deter crims if they really wanted to steal it... especially with the monkey wrench, lol, next time im at the lights and i look over and see a dude drivin with a monkey wrench im gona kick his ass.. haha

Satnav units are another theft favourite, they look for the suction cup marks on the windscreen and will strip the car trying to find the unit if it's not already stuck to the windscreen.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have one in mine, and i take it off when im away, not so much for experianced thieves, but those oppertunistic little f**ks can look in and maybe not bother. If i can stop them breaking my sh!t only to find out they cant get past the immobiliser i will try everything.
