Good day mate^^, I'm pretty much a car dummy ~_~.. Let me describe my beloved car a bit. I have a R33 Gts-t series 2, what has been modified was Pod filter (I was using Apexi filter and had it changed to 3A racing pod filter when I read the magazine that 3A racing pod filter was rated 1st in flow and 2nd in filtration among the top 10 brands), Kakkimoto Cat back exhaust (which look pretty old and not sure if I need to change for a new one), R34 rims.

What happen is whenever I push down the gas when I shift to 1st gear, the car sort of lagging for a few seconds as in you feel the car does not really move, I'm not sure if I can describe this as "turbo lag" or would you mind to describe "turbo lag" a fair bit? Does all turbocharged car has the same problem? My friend recommended me to get a boost controller but I don't really know if I really need one.

By reading some of the thread posted by other mates, I don't know what are the correct order if I need to do some modification on my car. I know ECU, fuel pump, FMIC, exhaust system are equally important but which one should come first with minimal budget. Apparently I can't fork out a few grand now have them all changed but I hope to do bit by bit. Umm, let's say now I have a FMIC installed on my car and will it make any difference on the power on the stock turbo?

All suggestions are welcome and very much appreciated!!

Hi mate, I personally wouldnt fit the intercooler unless you're planning to run higher boost. If you do a search you will see that the stock R33 intercooler is fine up to around 170rwkw.

The pause you're describing when you depress the accelerator is turbo lag.... the intercooler will make that pause longer...If you do fit a front mount intercooler you will probably notice a slight increase in turbo lag as the air now has to fill a much larger volume of piping before it reaches the manifold. And NO fitting an intercooler on it's own certainly will not increase your power. They are only there to prevent detonation by cooling large amounts of air which becomes hot after it has been compressed by the turbo.

So what can you do before fitting a FMIC?

Fit a dump pipe and high flow cat such as the BATMBL ones for sale in the traders section - this will allow the turbo to spool quicker

Fit an electronic boost controller such as an A'PEXi AVCR

Then consider you're power goals and decide on an appropriate intercooler. Keep in mind that R34 intercoolers have been proven to be efficient for up to 220rwkw and will bolt in the factory location keeping the piping nice and short... excellent mod if you ask me as you're going to have next to no aditional turbo lag compared to the stocker.

However If you just want to fit a shiny front mount to show off then disregard all of the above.

Hey mate, when you say high flow cat, are you referring to Catalytic converter? Anyway, BATMBL are selling three different cat such as : e281bc0022ac7d3fc6337a3f2361c77c.jpg

CATCO 3inch CAT (200csi steel inside, bolt-on)

CATCO 3inch CAT (large bolt-on)

CATCO 3inch CAT (small bolt-on)

So which one shall I get? What are the discrepancies among them actually? Would you mind to explain a bit why fitting a dump pipe and high flow cat would help to spool the turbo quicker, I'm curious about the theory behind~ Cheers mate!

Hi,

I have the 5" round body but they're both a much better cat than the stock one. The dump and cat are a bottle neck in the stock system and larger ones will provide less resistance to the flow of exhaust gas and will be able to escape more easily after it has done its job of spinning the exhaust compressor wheel in the turbo.

I wont go into much more detail since this is the cosmetic section. Do a search in the forced induction section mate cheers :)

Cool mate, I guess I would a search in the forced induction section but would you mind to help me with my last two questions? Firstly,I just wonder if a larger cat would cause the exhaust has to fill a much larger volume of piping before it reaches the final vent as similar to what you told me a FMIC would definitely produce a longer pause/turbo lag(5" round body is apparently much larger than 3" one). Secondly, do you reckon I should change to full turbo (the one with mandrel bend) instead of just changing dump pipe and catalytic converter as you suggested earlier?

Cheers mate!

MintR33,

Have a R33 GTS-t . Totally stock except for open pod filer and 3 inch exhaust system from the cat back.

1) You did mention 170rwkw with the stock R33 intercooler. Is this the GTS or GTR? Do you think at 0.8 bar of boost I can still retain the std intercooler? I kinda like the car as it is as it has minimal lag .

2) If I do for for the FMIC, is the GTR a good bet or should I look at something smaller like the Lancer Evo 2 or 3 type? I am not planning to go more than 0.8 bar of boost.

3) At 0.8 bar, would it be safe for me to retain my my std fueling system or minimum have a SAFC?

4) Finally, I was thinking of going for a 3 inch downpipe, an extention out for the std waste pipe and just one muffler at the back . Good idea? Whould I see any boost increase?

Thanks mate.
