sorry to hear about it.. this happened to my bro in laws skylines after a rebuild.. the car was run in 1000km and the guy that built it put some tommie poncams in it on the side of the road outside the turners shop.... he didnt try to crank over the engine by hand and the everyones suprise when the ignition was turned there was loud bangs... long story short complete waste of a set of acl pistons as acl said should wouldent replace just one of them ( only cylinder 6) was broken.. timing was 180 out.... u guys may even remember the car... colgtsx's old r33 s2

When the engine was gettng transported we needed to close the engine up so no foreign objects got in. Which meant all the covers,harmonic balancer,timing belt ect ect were getting put on.

Paul did say that the timing belt was only put on for transporting the engine and would have to be redone when we had the engine in the car.

So in all the excitment we forgot. And after the final tune we went for a drive to see its potential.

With a tight timing belt each time i got on and off the gas the shaft holding one of the pulleys would flex back and forth, so after about 6 hrs the shaft failed due to metal fatigue, the timing belt let go,and as a result the engine went out of timing.

The pistons smashed the valve train causing bent and snapped valves,also punched a nice hole in the face of the head.

Now before everyone jumps to conclusions Paul is not responsible for this engine failure as he did tell me that i would need to re-tension the timing belt.

When i called Paul after this had happend he was very sympethetic and agreed to help me out as much as i needed to get this thing back to the way it was.

I have since bought new bearings,new valves, new valve guides,new valve seats and will be ordering new pistons as soon as i get my rego and insurance sorted.

So hopefully next month ill be driving back up to see Paul with my engine to get the ball roling again.

Yes as you could imagine i was quite guttered after this had happend, but after about a day or two i was fine.

"Shit Happens" as they say and its nothing that cant be fixed. But rest assured she will be back with a vengence very soon!

Yes i feel like every engine that leaves my workshop is one of my babies...i like to keep in contact with the owners and monitor their progress....so yes it was like a death in the family.

Dave is one of the nicest genuine fella's your ever likely to meet, so i dont mind going out of my way to help out a guy i now regard as a mate.

The engine was running like a dream making good power and had excellent oil pressure...it was just a shame an external component thats so vital to keep the engine alive let go. Ive never lost a belt/pulley/stud in any of my own or customer engines in the past when correct procedure is followed.

Why not go for the RB30 with a larger turbo, ati balancer, rods and pistons and rev it to 8k with more power and the same response & spool but with more low end than the 25t with the gt30.

300rwkw is 'ok' but more power is good :P

I did think of it, strapping my head to a 30 bottom. But i had a goal with this engine from the start, to make if a very efficient 25, which it was before the shit hit the fan.

At only 17psi it was making 293rwkw and it did it easy. That was only 15mins on the dyno. At the same boost level but with more tuning time, it would crack 300 no problem.

And Adam's dyno (JEM) reads lower than most.

I've been in GT30 powered rb25det's and they really are absolutely no comparison for a gt30 powered rb30det. Seriously consider it. You have the head work that will work well with the extra displacement combined with ati balancer and rods you can have a reliable 8000rpm RB30 that makes all its boost at 3k with stock turbo like transient response.

As a comparison I can sit at 60km/h in third gear with a mates rb26dett gt2510 in second gear. Foot flat mine comes up on boost holds level for a fraction of a second until ~80km/h and then storms off.

At least go for a spin in a well sorted rb30det with a similar sized turbo I think you will look at the picture differently.

Through the hills with a now sold rb25det running a gt30 .6 out of corners his noticeably lacked the instant go/torque out of the corners; I was able to sit in third gear short shift behind him. Both making the same/similar peak power but he had done the works with inlet manifold, exhaust manifold etc..

For all out drag there's really no need for the 3ltr but 'all round' general street duties, motorkhana and track work you really can't go past the all round linear power delivery of the gt30 + rb30 combo. :banana:

Checked out Al's RB30DET GT30.82's setup? Thats how yours would be given the list of extensive mods.

Problem is convincing Paul? :)

says ye who is running a GT30 and 300kw :P

Lol yeah its not good how you get used to power so quickly..
