well it might be actually possible, would need subframe off, sump off, crank out, balancer off, timing gear off, timing belt off, oil pump off, gearbox off, clutch off and flywheel off.

but if you did all that you could probably get to all of the bearings.

seriously though, if you need new big end bearings, rebuild the motor. the main bearings are probably in trouble, there is most likely some crap floating around somewhere, might as well do a hone and new rings while you are in there. pull it apart, clean and check it all, put it back together. so much damn work just to get the sump off

You wouldn't have to remove your crank to change B/E brgs. I've changed them on various other motors in the past by removing the B/E caps & spark plugs, pushing each piston up an inch and being real careful not to nick the journals with the thread on the B/E bolts, if you do, crank has to come out (might have to come out anyway for a grind or at least a linish if its got grooves).

You'll have to do a r & r on each cyl that's on the down stroke then turn crank to do others.....pretty messy this way but good oportunity to replace with a decent baffled sump.

As far as mains are concerned, they rarely fail unless there's crap in the galleries but usually evident by pitting or scratches on the B/E shells.

You CANNOT get the sump off with the gear box attached, there are two bolts behind the flywheel. This has been covered before, It is not practical to take the box out, to remove the sump. Just pull the engine, there is no way around it. And yes, I have done it.

Sorry to be a spoil sport

ok thats fine.... just wanted to find out first as i have never worked on a rb26 befor motor has only been rebuilt not long ago.... it got low on oil and now has the knock at around 3 4000 ill get some one to do all the work and check every thing

might be time for the bigger turbos at the same time :domokun:

Fair enough, its good info to know. As I stated above, I have removed sumps on various other motors whilst still in the car but not on an RB, thanks.

yes so have i thats why i asked.....it has cp pistions and a baffled sump ect all ready and light weight rods im not sure what type of bearings were used tho any ideas on how to tell?

Check numbers on the back of the shell, may give a clue, or if your not using them again light scrape on inside will tell you if they're copper leads or alu tins. Always a good idea to use a copper lead or similar in an RB though.

Huh??? Same thing....you gotta remove the B/E cap to remove the B/E brg. What sort of other B/E is there?
Where do you think the big end bearing sits, and what does it protect? The Big End (it's the end of the conrod that connects to the crankshaft).

If you are referring to the big end bearing, then call it that.

Been in the engine reconditioning game for 20 years mate so I appreciate you teaching me something that I learnt when I was still in nappies.

When engine reconditioners say they're changing their B/E's, they're always referring to shells. Otherwise they refer to the rods specifically. They never talk about changing B/E whilst referring to rods.

Sounds like you like to make a play on peoples words and argue pointless issues otherwise you wouldn't have asked such an obvious question.

Sorry, didn't realise you had so much experience in these matters.

Yes, I can be a pedantic old bastard sometimes. It's just that there are quite a few younger members who don't always understand the technicalities.

And the only stupid question is the one you don't ask.

Yeah no probs bud, I know what you mean & I agree, its like banging your head on the wall sometimes. :)

    • I would not be surprised if you are the only person on earth that has the interest/desire to do that lol.  The Haltech base map is a really good starting point, the car will fire easily and drive very well, even on mild boost levels. To me, following your advice sounds like some sort of ancient Chinese water torcher lol (this is not an insult Josh, never change <3)
    • Those car show concepts from the 2000's and 2010's like the Floria and IDx were brilliant and should've gone ahead, at least one of them. But neither Honda nor Nissan are thinking about affordable performance any more, which is truly sad.  Even if Toyota's liquid hydrogen ICE development reaches the point where it's commercially viable and the infrastructure to support it, Honda/Nissan would have to wait until Toyota allow fee access to their patents to offer it with any smaller performance models they released to take advantage of it.
    • A sporty manual RWD coupe with a IL4 Honda engine would only be a good thing I assume we won't see anything released for a few years though, unless informal talks and designs have been going on for a few years,  and due to the current, and future, emmisions and safety requirements, I assume anything "sporty" they would do would be at least some hybrid thingie And hopefully anything they are thinking of has nice lines, without lots of plastic and fake bits hanging off it like that horrendous FK8 that looked like it was designed by a 13 year old The other issue of course in the current market is cost, currently the type R is around $70k, a twin is around $50k Meh, I'm old and grumpy and would rather buy a older model car and waste my coin on that than buying anything currently available new
