Hey guys,

I have a RB20DET, and i am looking at upgrading the cams. Now i have been looking at HKS cams, and more specifically 256 duration with 8.8mm lift or the 264 duration with 9.0mm lift.

Now i was wondering if the RB20DE or RB25DE cams have similar profile as these would be significantly cheaper then HKS items, and whether these cams will fit in a RB20DET.

Finally what would be the ideal setup for a street car aiming to make 450hp (fly), the HKS 264 cams or will RB20DE cams do the trick? I am aiming to maximise the response of the turbo, midrange power and if possible make the turbo spool quicker, i am not after peak power ONLY if 250rwkw is hit, otherwise i need a set of cams to help me make 250rwkw.:uh-huh:

My main mods are as follows

3.3" exhaust, FMIC, pod, DSBC, clutch, 2 way diff, PFC. Now i am also looking at a suitable turbo to match (450hp), will a HKS GT2835Pro (internal gate and T3 flange) be best suited for my application or should i be looking at a HKS GT2530 or Garrett GT25 or Garrett GT28 or even a GCG Hi flow 450 hp item (i am after a bolt on item as well, and keep the internals stock)?

Any comments are more then welcome as i would like to hear everyones experiences/opinions.

Thanks!

Hi zforce, 450 bhp out of an internally standard RB20DET is more than I would think is practicle. The highest output I have seen from an RB20DET was the Gibson GTSR which had 460 bhp for short races and 420 bhp for long races. It was far from standard internally.

To achieve your target you would need a combinatin of more than 1.5 bar of boost and 9,000 rpm. So around 400 bhp (240-250 rwkw) is the most I would be looking for without at least a set of forged pistons.

Moving onto your camshaft question, RB20's run hydraulic lifters, so a HKS 264 camshaft designed for a GTR (which has solid lifters) is not really suitable.

As for turbos, my personal preference is the GCG ball bearing hi flow on a RB25DET turbo. We have one on our R32 GTST circuit race car, another on a R33 GTST road car and another on a R34 GTT road (sometimes drag) car. All work really well, a good all purpose turbo for 200 rwkw up to 250 rwkw.

Second preference would be an HKS2530, we have had 2 of those on the GTR and they were the best all round turbos out several we tried. Just check the quality of it if it's a used one as there are some crappy ones around.

Hope that helps

Thanks SydneyKid,

I was just unsure whether 400hp would make 250rwkw, but now i know it does, so ill set my target a bit lower.

In regards to the cams, so HKS 264 cams are out of the question? What would you suggest then? HKS 256 or RB20DE or RB25DE cams?

With the turbo, i have heard some many different stories i am more lost now then when i first learnt what a turbo is! I have heard that the HKS GT2530 wont make 250rwkw, and some people say it will. Some say GCG turbos are not as responsive as HKS items. Others say the HKS GT2835 will be the best suited turbo as it isnt that much laggier then a 2530 but offers alot more power. So i dont know what to believe.

My goal is 250rwkw, using stock internals and have it as responsive as possible. Any suggestions on what turbo to use?

    • Interesting, I haven't read about the issue with oil getting into the speedo in the cluster before. I'll have to take more notice with mine. The speedo on my R32's when I've run factory diff and tyre size have never been accurate as far as I can remember. The non Type-M GTS-t did come with 15" 5 stud wheels and smaller brakes, but that's less than 5% of them.
    • Good to hear the condenser you picked up off my brother worked all good. Do you think there could be an issue with your AC compressor itself or the clutch on it then? I don't know a lot about them so I can't really help but keen to hear what it ends up being. Keep the build thread going man, it's nice to look back on over time.
    • This is a story of my life things, I learned eventually (thanks to someone calling me out) that my enthusiasm for discussing and sharing ideas that it came across as arrogance and I'm like... WTF?!    One thing I'm pretty sure I justifiably pride myself on is knowing that everyone will have things they can teach you, and you're always going to find out that something you think you know turns out wrong - you just don't know what it is until you get there.   Just the bursting enthusiasm that comes with ADHD when you hit something that gives you dopamine dumps can come across like you think everyone else is wrong or don't matter. But yeah, I'm a software engineer by trade and also do tuning in weekends and 100% have long had a reputation for  quickly making connections when resolving problems or forming solutions that I've sometimes had to take people form a long walk from start to end to explain how I ended up where I did when it's seemed "too simple" when I've stated my initial case, and had the "WTF" type reaction when they've realised how much was actually considered haha.   My reward is that I get all the curly problems thrown at me.

I've never seen someone be able to get try and be cranky with me, while they're holding back fits of laughter... 😛   Also, I tell mine it's payback anyway. She has BiPolar. So the household can get quite emotionally wild at times 😛
    • I'm not up to date on the latest, but for basic modifications like pod filter, lower springs etc you can get a modification permit at the time of inspection.  For more serious modifications you will need engineering.  Intercoolers used to fall into the mod permit rule but its been a long while since i looked it up.   Either way you will be able to get it registered, just a case of $300 vs $3k .
