I've got a quote from Unigroup today..

$1000 for Nistune fitted and tuned

so, I've got 3 places

- MRC: $1000

- UAS: $980

- Unigroup: $1000

So, what u reckon?

Wow I need to move to AUS!. That sounds like alot of money for a board+install+1 hour of dyno time unless it takes longer. I bought a nistune board and getting a buddy to install it for me. It was like 220-225 shipped just for the board.

from what i understand if u get a remap you'll need to buy an emulator if you want to start modifying your maps realtime. you can also buy a cheap eeprom writer but you cannot do realtime and each eeprom can only be burned once. both require one of those piggyback sockets to be installed (which would be done if you had a remap) - either way it starts to get fiddly and expensive if you dont know what your doing.

the nistune board pretty much does the exact same thing as all of the above but is much more user friendly i.e. you can plug your p.c. in it and tune it realtime, look at sensors etc. and know its going to work. the added bonus is that theres software/revisions specifically written for it.

so for the extra cash you'll be able to do your own tunes later on quite easily

if you want real cheap, install a piggyback socket thing, get a jaycar eeprom writer kit and find someone on the net whos uploaded a rom file to suit your specific setup, write to a blank eeprom, install and driveaway. Or copy a mates map with a reader/writer kit etc.

correct me if im wrong

Nistune installed into your ecu should be no more than $300.

+250 an hour tuning. Car with basic mods should only require a clean up of fuel mixtures and abit more timing 2 hours max but should be able to be done in 1 hour

subie i agree with the other guys, those prices are way too high. these shops are working on the basis that since we're all used to paying $1000 for a pfc plus $500 for a tune, people will blindly jump at paying $1000 because it's cheaper. of course that completely ignores the issue of exactly what you're getting for your money! :D a shop in silverwater was asking $1800 for a Chiptorque remap when Chiptorque themselves in Brisbane were asking only $500. go figure, i know what i call that.

if you send your ecu to Nistune they will install the new board and return it to you for $250. you don't get the software to tune yourself for that , you have to go to a tuner who has it. a single user licence that allows you to tune yourself costs an extra $200 from memory, but then a multi user licence that tuners buy allows them to tune as many cars as they want and only costs $600. you might like to ask some of these shops why they effectively want $750 for a tune when it's so similar to a PFC, i'd be interested to see their response.

as you correctly state that's all well and good, but that's what they're charging so what are the options? not sure if it's of help to you but i know that Autotech in Canberra have Nistune and will not charge you anywhere near $750 for a tune, more like $200 if it's straightforward. throw in $150 for fuel and your up for $600 or so total. also the Nistune website has a list of tuners, try there.

Thanks for the info mate..

I'll give Nistune a call and see if i can send my stock ecu and get it installed by them for $250... then, i'll call back few tuners who can tune it and see how much they gonna charge?? interesting..

cheers

mate if it makes it easier the address, account details etc are all on the Nistune website.

    • Yeah, nah. I had the actuator rod off it today. The arm will not move at all. Neither out, nor in. Yeah, you'd think so, but I've been thinking about that. Even when the actuator rod fell all the way off at the beginning of this saga, it would build more boost and faster in lower gears than it would in higher gears, and you'd think that that was the opposite of what should happen. But I strongly suspect that there is a thing with the gearing getting the revs to rise faster, that there must be some transient effect with the gas flow rate rising quickly, that you don't get with the more steady state case of the higher gears. Keep in mind - the gate is not shut in either of my weirdnesses. So things are not "normal". We normally think about a turbo spooling up (below the wastegate target) with the gate shut. I have all sorts of mental models running now where the gate is a little bit open, and having it stuck open allowing gas out while it should be going through the turbine has all sorts of weird effects (in these mental models). I'm thinking in the higher gears, the ex mani pressure builds to the point where enough gases spill out the wastegate to just prevent the pressure rising much more at all, or just creeping up, all the whole the revs are increasing and getting closer to the point where a gear shift becomes necessary.
    • Is it possibly wastegate actuator itself is sticking, or even the rod to flapper? Otherwise I reckon things are getting a bit rusty/worn   Also odd it won't boost in 3rd to 5th, but will in 1st, I'd expect the other way around with it slightly open as there's more time on your way to redline for it to spin up
    • Does anyone know ow what these two plugs are for and if they should be unplugged? Just put the dash back together and can't remember if these were plugged in before or unplugged! (Blue and white plugs) 🤦🏽‍♂️
    • Did some FASTing ...got the impression that the actual part# was a moot point ; seems all of these hardlines for coolant are discontinued/NLA... like, I take it you're after the hardline that bolts onto to the manifold...that's NLA according to amayama & nengun .... ...just to clear up some confusion, they typically mounted the AAC valve to the intake manifold somewhere near a coolant passage, so the body of the valve heats up & holds it open when engine's up to temp - no coolant flows through the valve, it's a mechanical, thermal connection.
    • And now the bloody flapper is jammed slightly open. Lazy as all f**k in 3rd-5th (very hard to convince it to make much boost before you run out of revs), but will make 12 psi in 1st, which shouldb't be possible with a 5 psi spring and controller set to <10 psi. Methinks I'm lucky it jammed where it did, rather than fully closed. It's actually a well weird situation. Careful examination of what's happening in the back of that housing when the gearbox comes out and all the other stuff (injectors, AFM retune) is supposed to be done, next week.
