1993 R33 Gts... (any Problems/issues?)

Recommended Posts

Firstly this is my very first post, I'm glad to be a member and I'm certain that I will learm a lot from this forum.

I've found an R33 GTS that i really like and would love it as a first car, from what I have read so far, some of you approve of them as first cars, some disapprove for various reasons. Anyway, I'm going to go and have a look at it, and I was just wondering what I should be looking out for.

Do the R33s have any particular rust spots or any common problems that I could look out for?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Thanks! I think was probably just about everything I need to know, I'll definately keep all of that in mind.

Yeah I wish I had found that before I bought mine (R33 GTS). Might've seen a few things that cost me later on!

As for the R33 GTS as a first car... mine was my second but I'd certainly say it's a pretty good way to introduce yourself to a car with a *little* bit of power... I went from an old Sigma with like 3rwkw (maybe not... but pretty woeful) to my R33 GTS and I must say that for at least the first year that was plenty of power for me. It's not about having a super-quick car, but I'd always wanted an R33 and it's a whole lotta fun to drive, handles fantastic (esp. compared to the majority of 'daily-drivers' that are in the price range of a first-car buyer... and certainly better than any falcodore of the same year!), and goes well enough to not be boring. Oh, and of course it was a major cop magnet :P Gotta deal with that! Those red "[P]lease Pull Me Over" plates really sucked!

Yeah I'm really hopin that I get it. It will be a nice and fun car i think, I learnt to drive in a Lancer which had about 4 kw as well haha so it should be a nice change. It's all standard though and I'm not planning on driving like a complete wanker so hopefully the police men will be nice to me...

If you are allowed to drive a turbo where you live then buy one, they are around the same price as the NA's now. If you're not allowed to drive them buy a crap box until you are. Dont waste your time with NA lines.

ok i know i might just be a lucky mofo but at the time of writing this post i have NEVER been pulled over in my gts-t. Im 21 and come off my P's tomorrow (yay!) and ive had this car since November last year. Not a single problem yet and i run what im sure is an illegal exhaust and FMC.

i guess that someone up there wants me to have fun in the black beast with no cop trouble :D

PS i call my car the black beast for those who dont know :D:D:D

    • For the love of everything that is holy, how do you guys manage to get this thing off?????!!!! I wanted to change my spark plugs today. Got everything, watched all the tutorials I could find, and read all the forums in here on steps. And then I got blocked on this coilpack cover!! Talk about feeling defeated 😕 Most guides just say it should come off after a bit of jiggling, but nothing I did worked and I didn't find any video tutorials where the person actually had to deal with the cover - it wasn't even there in most cases. I took off everything above it. The wires towards the firewall had brackets connected to them so I unscrewed it from the cover so I could move them around.    I took off the hose circled below and still nothing.   I thought maybe I could get more leverage by loosening the bracket that holds the engine cover, but that didn't make a difference either. I was sliding the cover back towards the firewall to lift it up, then pulling the firewall side towards the passenger side to try get it off, but it kept hitting the piece highlighted in blue. I don't think this car has ever had any OEM parts changed (the black rubber connectors really need to be changed, they are rock hard), so even the wires near the firewall are iffy and I'm worried about breaking them - I've already got one OEM clamp with a wonky screw that doesn't do anything!  Would anyone have a link to any tutorial that shows how to take this cover off? I just put everything back to how it was but I'd like to get the spark plugs changed for peace of mind. Most videos I found are for removing the cover in an RB26. The strut bar is the only thing I did not take off but the cover is not even reaching that to be the cause for all this. Same story with the rubber piece for the throttle body - did no difference.   I did have a peek inside the cover and saw that the coilpacks look nice and clean, and even got a cable tie around them and the plug (except for one piece of corrugated wire protection tube that seems to have been living there for while 😡). But I really want to see the state of the spark plugs and get the damn things changed!  Appreciate any help you can give me. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
    • Ok thanks i try look into it. And i dont wanna start a new thread so i ask here. Can this steering wheel https://trust-kikaku.myshopify.com/products/875111001 fit on my car (R34 GT) It has OEM GT/T wheel (no auto - factory manual) Of course the center with the airbag would be from that stock wheel.
    • Just some day one info.  It is heavy, the flywheel being built in makes for a solid setup.  Will try and weigh with a flywheel to compare to a direct clutch or nismo twin. Also the advertised torque is peak, which is not unsurprising and explains my previous conversations. So real torque is about 1000 FT/lB, plenty for a 1000hp GTR.   Considering mine is making 600ft/lb wheels, 650-80 ish fly(?) lots of room for more power
    • Yep. It makes such a difference to have the right sized plate on the right sized mount.
