1993 R33 Gts... (any Problems/issues?)

Recommended Posts

Firstly this is my very first post, I'm glad to be a member and I'm certain that I will learm a lot from this forum.

I've found an R33 GTS that i really like and would love it as a first car, from what I have read so far, some of you approve of them as first cars, some disapprove for various reasons. Anyway, I'm going to go and have a look at it, and I was just wondering what I should be looking out for.

Do the R33s have any particular rust spots or any common problems that I could look out for?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Thanks! I think was probably just about everything I need to know, I'll definately keep all of that in mind.

Yeah I wish I had found that before I bought mine (R33 GTS). Might've seen a few things that cost me later on!

As for the R33 GTS as a first car... mine was my second but I'd certainly say it's a pretty good way to introduce yourself to a car with a *little* bit of power... I went from an old Sigma with like 3rwkw (maybe not... but pretty woeful) to my R33 GTS and I must say that for at least the first year that was plenty of power for me. It's not about having a super-quick car, but I'd always wanted an R33 and it's a whole lotta fun to drive, handles fantastic (esp. compared to the majority of 'daily-drivers' that are in the price range of a first-car buyer... and certainly better than any falcodore of the same year!), and goes well enough to not be boring. Oh, and of course it was a major cop magnet :P Gotta deal with that! Those red "[P]lease Pull Me Over" plates really sucked!

Yeah I'm really hopin that I get it. It will be a nice and fun car i think, I learnt to drive in a Lancer which had about 4 kw as well haha so it should be a nice change. It's all standard though and I'm not planning on driving like a complete wanker so hopefully the police men will be nice to me...

If you are allowed to drive a turbo where you live then buy one, they are around the same price as the NA's now. If you're not allowed to drive them buy a crap box until you are. Dont waste your time with NA lines.

ok i know i might just be a lucky mofo but at the time of writing this post i have NEVER been pulled over in my gts-t. Im 21 and come off my P's tomorrow (yay!) and ive had this car since November last year. Not a single problem yet and i run what im sure is an illegal exhaust and FMC.

i guess that someone up there wants me to have fun in the black beast with no cop trouble :D

PS i call my car the black beast for those who dont know :D:D:D

    • I don't know for sure, but I expect the recent model V37 400R (or RV37) is pretty much identical to the recent model Q50 RedSport with the differences being cosmetic. (and ignoring the fact the new model Q50 RS is LHD only)
    • Hey everyone, So another day, another power steering issue that I need help with 😂 I’ve been having a whining power steering pump and realised my levels were super low. So I’ve topped up the PS fluid and bled the system. While doing the steering wheel locks to clear the air, I noticed that there was a lot of PS fluid leaking to the ground.  I’ve been trying to find where it’s been leaking from and finally figured out the culprit.  It seems to be this hose that connects to the AC Compressor? It’s some tiny as metal needle coming out of the compressor and it has a hose connected to the PS reservoir and whenever I’m giving the car full lock or close to full lock, it just leaks from there. If you hold the full lock it will squirt quite fast.    I’ve added two pics for reference and circled the hose where it’s leaking from. I just googled the part # I can see in the picture and it says it’s the AC compressor.  So what I need help with is: 1. Trying to figure out what a PS fluid hose is doing connected to the AC compressor?  2. Anything I can do to stop this leak? The hose and metal piece are too small for a 6mm clamp. Should I even try and clamp this? If it’s squirting when on full lock, that’s some decent amount of pressure. Would clamping it tight make the fluid leak from the reservoir?  3. Do I need to replace the AC compressor or the PS pump? Not sure if this is related to the PS pump.    Thanks in advance.
    • Pics resized, hopefully that works better. Straightforward job today. The existing brakes were very grabby due to glazed pads and fronts 99% done (rears about 1/3 left I guess), so Racebrakes Sydney sent a care package Front 5000 series 2 piece rotors with DBA extreme pads (I'm told these are 2024's bendix ultimates) Rear 4000 series with the same pads All on, no tricks except a few of the discs were pretty rusted to the hubs (the front had threads to push the disc off but rear did not). Also, it looks like the nav side rear handbrake had been over tightened, lots of dust, worn shoe and even a groove in the old drum....presumably it will go better now Still need to replace the fluid with good stuff (motul 600) and bed them in, but I'm confident upgraded standard size will be all that it needs for now, they are pretty generous brakes from factory
    • I would email them for the info you require and if/how they support your car with setup and features  There's also a ton of YouTube vids with ECUTek stuff out there as well
    • so is the 2020 VR37 exhaust the same as a 4door Q50?or Q60 as i have messaged a few shops and they have no idea. 1 told me the q50 is up to 2022 and im like look its a 2020 Nissan Skyline 400R and then they proceeded to tell me that its an R33 exhaust i needed and im like nah its not its not. apparently 1 has a cross pipe section and 1 dont? I dont understand why getting a f**kin exhaust made or bought for this car is so hard lol. and yes the hangers are in different spots for the mufflers for the 2016 models.
