this thread rocks! jason isn't worried, he has a GTR. we all know zeds are what gay hairdressers drive down to darlinghurst for their weekly full body wax appointment. :)

good to see none of us are immune to a little bit of a wind up.

I say the deal is the winner hosts the post race bbq at his joint. so actually I hope johnny wins in that case as his place is nice and has plenty of beer in stock...

LOL, i was winding up a particular Vic GTR driver tonight, telling him all about fictional pace my car has and how is must be so much quicker

And only 3 months more talk :)

Speaking of the exchange of valuable information, a few guys have asked me to find out some details as it pertains to their car set up;

I don't remember seeing a format for the day, except the Superlap at the end for the fastest 5 from each class. Is it Lap Dash format, one car at a time, a warm up lap, a flying lap and a cool down lap? Or SuperSprint format, 2 groups of 4 cars at a time with a warm up lap, 3 flying laps and a cool down lap? Or Track Day format with groups of similarly paced cars running 20 minute sessions?

I assume that official lap times will be provided by Natsoft using their removable transponders. Will updates be available via the garage video feed?

At a quick count I see 80 or so expressions of interest. Considering the 90 limit can I assume that entry acceptance preference goes on receipt date of EOI?

I asume there will be no problem with having 2 cars in the same garage?

Has the Friday been reserved for practise at OP for Superlap competitors?

Cheers

Gary

I asked that question a few pages back. Answer is it will be broken up into groups with 20 minute sessions.

Thanks Harry, I thought I read it somewhere.

That leads to more questions;

1. Splitting the groups into lap times can cause problems. The guys who do fast laps due to handling get stuck behind the guys who do fast laps due to engine power.

2. What's the passing rules? Is it going to be limited to the straights as per track days? If so refer to #1 above.

3. If it is ulimited passing, what sort of CAMS permit is going to handle passing around corners and under brakes?

4. If #3, are the drivers ready for this sort of activity?

in Tsukuba the guys it was two twenty minute sessions and the last one a ten minute session, the guys on there fast laps had headlights on, 10 cars at a time,

and yes if it is like it was overthere, you can be effected by traffic and the like, in our middle session there was a major oil down which basically finished that session because they had to put down so much stuff to soak the oil up!!

hopefully over the course of an hour of running you should be able to string some fast laps to together.

cheers russ

my thoughts:

1. having predominantley had cars that do lap times due to handling, you learn to allow a bit of a gap in a sprint event to more powerful cars so that you're not getting held up through corners on your hot laps.

2. passing only on straights can cause a problem for less powerful cars, but there are other ways of finding some clear track than passing the car in front - do a slower lap to create some space while watching your mirrors, or roll-through the pits to get onto a different section of track from that car alltogether.

3. a supersprint permit would facilitate unlimited passing with L2S licences. not sure if that permit stipulates that the format has to be as per state supersprints though??? but that wouldn't be a bad thing in my opinion either.

4. from what I can gather most open class guys, certainly the majority of those on here, are probably more experienced than the average supersprint competitor. there is every possibility of the old red-mist or ego getting involved on the day though.

so personally I'll be treating it like a qualifying session, looking for a bit of clear track for a few attempted hot laps per session. You're not going to get anywhere by trying to run the whole 20 minute session flat out. If you can do that and still be setting good times at the end of it, your tyres are probably too hard for this type of event. I know my rears won't cop 20 minutes of trying to set PB laps!

What good tyres would you use john. I thought 315 only came in crappy brands. I have decided to scrap my 18*10's and 18*12's and put 18*9 all round on my R32. That way I can run RE 55's all round. :D

Yoko 315's were awesome though :)

Ouch... that sucks man! Love those rims...

That works if there aren't too many cars on the track at once, at Wakefield it's basically impossible, by the time you leave enough gap someone slots into it down the straight. It is better at Oran, being a long track, but it will depend on how many cars.

A Supersprint permit would limit groups to 4 cars. Hardly 20 minute sessions either.

The classes are not split on driver ability or engine power, in most cases it is the tyre choice that will decide which class some competitors are in. I am imagining 500+ bhp cars on road tyres with inexperienced drivers in the Clubsprint class.

As an experienced circuit racer, I'm OK with that, but I doubt that logic will apply to everyone. Some guys won't care about winning, they will simply be out to cram as many laps into the 20 minutes as they can. Then there are the guys that have never been to Oran before, it may take them 20 to 30 laps to learn it properly. That could take 2 or 3 sessions.

It all boils down to track density, which is really the question I was asking. The Friday practise would also help with the last point.

You can get up to 12 cars on a grid for a Supersprint. The changed the rules last year so that you can run up to i think 16 cars. Its kind of crazy that they changed it to so many cars :)

Its really rather easy. Line up at the front of the pits, Be the first out there then block like buggery by balking quicker cars mid corner. Throwing on indicators half way down the straight to keep them guessing. Point your windscreen washer squirters straight up in the air and give them a blast so cars behind see spray coming from the car. Half way down the straight throw your arm out the window like you have a mechanical problem but keep your foot into it.

You guys call yourselves experiences racers yet you are worried about traffic. Never raced a day in my life and i have it all sorted :D

lol, so you have seen me race before!

I'm not worried about me, it's those other crazy people :D

Then there is always the littering of the track with parts as they fall off the car. Things lide side skirts and front bars etc. So that the quick cars end up doing a slalom run down the straight knocking a fair whack of km/h off their top end :D

Not to mention all the McDonals and Hungry Jacks packaging that resides inside my car. That come come out a window at any time

or you can just do what fatz does. short cut all corners ensuring plenty of rocks and dirt get dragged on track to wind johnny up. then drag your now broken exhaust around the track to produce spectacular spark show.

I have never hit another car or wall in all the years doing track days, don't mention drifting. Although nearly written off my car twice passing slower cars that did not see me. Strobe lights might be the go with so many gtr’s to dodge. I doubt if they will run 16 cars in this event. Road car or open there will still be a big difference in times and hence the challenge and potential danger.

Yes months off yet and I predict this will be the biggest thread in any forums history.

Sydneykid I am not crazy just different.

I did say hit something, as this one below was at Wakey and I just got a bucket of dirt in the car. I found out I could not brake after the kink so can cross this one off the list.

That Bel garage Evo is quick  , with one of our race team drivers in it did a 1.44.572 at Eastern Creek yesterday IN THE RAIN. That was the fastest time at the Evo versus WRX Challenge, but not by much (0.05 sec). Driver's report was that it will do sub 40's in the dry with some minor sorting. Looks like my early guess that a 1.12 to 1.13 at Oran Park will be necessary to win this thing.

    • That would be interested if it's the case as seems like it would make the job a lot messier but subaru sells OEM gaskets so seems it might of had it.
    • Fuel tank is out. Looks pretty bloody good under (ie above) the fuel tank.  Amazing how good the factory e-coat holds up in the hidden areas.  No where near as much body deadener to get rid of as the front but still not looking forward to it!  Shit of a job.  I'm thinking I might grab a needle scaler and give that a go before I attack it with the angle grinder and wire wheel which is how I did the front 2/3's of the car.  Feels good to be working on the car again but who knows how long it will last!  Hopefully I can get it further forward than where it was prior to this last block of work when I decided to go back 10 steps further down the rabbit hole from where i already was! The problem is, I'm realising how hard it will be to repair and paint the bumpers, which cannot be put back on the car, and have a good paint match. There are also areas where it would be VERY hard to hide the new paint where it transitions from old paint. Like this- There is only one way to do that perfectly and I really dont want to have to do what that means I would have to do... 🤦‍♂️
    • Pretty sure the factory assembly doesn't have any gasket at all, just RTV.
    • I will get a couple cans for sure thanks, I do have 2lt fish oil to spray around the car already.
    • Thought I’d post pics of the packages for those interested. The premium package is #16. Remote start, security with tilt sensor and remote and backup battery, auto fold mirrors and door illumination.    Can post up pics of all the factory options and images from the factory options brochure if people are interested. I have all the dealer books etc for all rv37 models.
