Just been informed they have GT2860R-7's restrictors built in.

Guy also said a lot of people actually remove the restrictors thinking they are improving flow - apparently the shaft is actually physically supported by the internal restrictor and then go boom. Bogans and turbos don't mix. :D

Sorry to Hijack the thread, but Ive done a bit of reading on this and apparently all the GT series of Garrett's have restrictors built in.

Now I'm not sure if we should believe this, it seems as though half the people out there say to use restrictors and half the people say they are built in.

I'm about to fit a set of GT2560Rs (707160 - 9, the GT-SS equivalents) to an R32 GTR and I'm in the same boat you were, not sure whether to just bolt them up, or to put restrictors in.

The sticker on the plastic wrap the turbos come in say not to exceed 60psi which leads me to think the restrictors are not built in. Also, in the GT-SS kit (which I didn't get) they have a banjo restrictor to put in place.

Can someone with a bit a bit of knowledge please help clarify this???

I know the turbos will work without the restrictors, but will this put exessive loading on the seals and blow them out 10,000Kms down the line? or are there internal restrictors?

Sorry to Hijack the thread

No not at all - thats the kind of info I am after.

Definitely odd that it would have that warning if there was a restrictor built in. We were assured they have a restrictor - mate who picked them up said the guy showed him another turbo without a restrictor to compare.

Do not use a oil restrictor if you have one built into the turbo.

I have heard this can cause back pressure on the oil lines.

If you still want to restrict some flow......have a smaller diameter oil line made up.

IE..take your line to H.I.S. Hose and ask them to make you another line using your

connectors.

Very good Idea TiTAN, I'll call GCG on Tuesday to confirm and see if I can find out which turbos do actually have a restrictor in them, unless someone has already done this???

Looking at the oil feed hole for the GT-SS's there doesn't seem to be anything restricting there (like a mushroom looking thing that others have mentioned) it just goes into what looks like a chamber or pocket.

Is that the case with yours to paulR32gtr? or were you told that the restrictors were actually inside the turbo and not visible?

In my research, often the Garrett's come with a 1.2mm restrictor in place. However, there is a 0.8mm restrictor available from Garrett. I didn't check mine before installing, but I believe I have the 1.2mm in place.. I am also getting some oil past the turbo seals...

From what I have learned/read/asked - I would be fitting the 0.8mm restrictors from Garrett if i were you.. since they are ball bearing, you only need a good quality oil getting through there to lube them, you don't need the kind of pressure that a journal bearing requires...

I am also getting some oil past the turbo seals

Not what you want!

We are putting the turbos on tomorrow so ill compare against the stockies.

HKS GT-SS's are on the way for my car and I am going to trust their kit - guess if they are including restrictors for what are essentially a GT2860R-9 frame with all the same CHRA physical characteristics as the -7's - we should be doing something about it.

Ok, I called GCG and emailed them so I got responses from 2 different people just to be sure.

They were both very helpful and both stated that there were inbuilt restrictors so additional ones were not necessary to install on an R32 GTR in the GT2860 range.

    • We have 2x Swifts and my plans for a Swift, unfortunately, do not extend to an intake and an exhaust. I've been having dirty thoughts about a 2.5L Suzi V6, AWD gearbag out of a suitable donor, rear floorpan graft to take the rear cradle from same, and either trumpets of evil or a small supercharger. If I'm going to make noise in a Swift, I want it to be anti-social, evil handling and rough. Probably need to be fully stripped inside, matt black paint, plastic windows, 7" wide wheels, big brakes, silly suspension, etc etc etc. I have no idea if any of the proposed driveline components could take the pain. But it would be a hoot finding out.
    • Really, anyone modifying a car isn't being financially smart. We're doing it for the things we love. And honestly, a high revving, light, NA car is actually pretty darn fun. I used to have a Swift Sport, and I miss that thing as a daily, and yes, doing something like some intake and exhaust stuff would have made minimal gains, but would have bought an even bigger smile
