Hi all,

Im going to get a s2 r33 towards the end of this year. First questions stock import or mild modded one in oz?

Now heres the tricky bit, what parts do you guys recommend changing to make the car bullet proof engine and turbo wise.

I dont want huge power, no more than 200rwkw, and i only really want to do a cat back exhaust, Pod, BOV, and computer.

Now, as far as turbos go, what is a good replacement for a stock one which can just be bolted on and will easily keep pushing 8 - 10psi boost all day everyday.

Id prefer to get this done before i start driving the car everyday, so yea, any recommendations on aftermarket turbos that can bolt straight onto a stock r33 with mods above? and any other hints on how to get trouble free driving without worrying about stock parts like turbo breaking down..

Answers to your questions are as follows...

Buy a stock as possible 33, atleast you'll have in piece of mind that it hasnt been thrashed.

As far as bullet proofing goes, you wouldn't need to with your respected goals of only 200rwkw. That figure is a lot of fun in an R33.

You want my advice, i'd go a Full Turbo Back exhaust of any trusted brand ie. GReddy, X-Force, HKs. A split dump pipe. You'll be pushing to get 200rwkw SAFELY with a stock 33 cooler. Either invest in a front mount or an R34 stock cooler. My frind has one in his 33 getting 204rwkw @ 10psi with mild mods. Computer wise id go Apexi Power FC, if you're going that route you will also need an AIr flow meter upgrade. Invest inthe very best you can get with computers if it is going to be your daily driver. Last but not least a boost controller. Ive got a GReddy Profec B Spec II. Works wonderful. I prefer Electronic over your simple T'piece boosters. but a lot of people can argue that with fair amount of dis/advantages. Each to there own.

As for the turbo, your stock turbo should get you up to 200rwkw fine. Aslong as you keep it well oiled, and must i say, install a turbo timer. If you look after your turbo it will look after you. The stock turbo in an R33 brings boost up a lot quicker ie very responsive, and when boosted and with the right computer settings can pull through the whole rev range without giving up.

If you decide on upgrading, my choices would be

1. HKS GTRS

2. GRedddy TD06-25G

or for cheap but also mild responsive power that will get you 200rwkw a KKR 430. tried and tested. Works wonderful. You can pick one up for Around $700.

Just because the car is stock does not mean it hasnt had the ring strapped out of it and just because it is lightly or heavily modified does not mean it has been either. People that are spending big dollars on their cars wouldnt normaly skimp on the servicing, and provided that has been done to reflect the way it is driven they are quite happy to keep on going. Save yourself the 2-3k you would spend on it and just buy one that already has the mods done to it, as they are damn near the same price as a stock one.

Yea ive been looking at stock and modded r33's only thing that makes me go for a stock one is the fact i no what has been done to it and im not getting somthing that has been flogged by some kid. Although i have seen enthusiast cars around with sensible mods, not boosted, a car like that would pull me away from a stock one.

Fully modified or not, doesn't show if it has or hasnt been serviced properly.

I'd check for a logbook and get NRMA to inspect it. go right through the car. Check for any hidden surprises.

Only reason why i'd go for a stocky is cas most modded cars have been thrashed!

More power equals more potential damage that has occured to the engine, if any!

My fnal note, just ask for a service history.And get NRMA to check it out...No Logbook.dont buy it, but pretty rare to find one with a logbok. good luck.

You would be silly to import one, there are so many std R33 GTSTs for sale on carsales.com.au

200rwkw is fine for the standard turbo and most parts. some parts you must upgrade are;

- full exhaust

- stand alone or piggyback (safc will do)

- fuel pump (nismo, tomei, GTR pump etc etc)

- cold air intake is OK

- boost controller

- heavy duty clutch

the standard turbo is fine for 200rwkw but its a ball-liner as its bit risky. if you want to take away the risk of it failing get it ball bearing hiflowed $2000

or buy an off the shelf garrett vanilla unit that will mate up to the standard parts etc. no near for a brand name $3k jobbie if a 2k one will do

keep some money aside for when things like

- clutch

- coilpacks

- timing belt

fail, break down, perform to less than stadard etc - so you have some money ready for when stuff breaks

the tune at the end of the day will decide how "bullet proof" so speak to some workshops

ask them how they plan to apply the strategy of "bullet proofing" your car for you

find out what ECU system they will setup and tune and how they plan to tune it etc

and on the topic off BOV's are there any brands you can just put on without stuffing up your tune? like just a straight swap SSQV or HKS recirculating type?

Or is it just best to stay with stock BOV and get a POD filter and put it in an encolsure, i hear this gives off some good results aswell,.

    • Nah no bearings, just slip fit.  Would be a reasonably challenging but not impossible job to modify it to run bearings but I'm hoping that's not necessary as I may have well built one myself if I end up spending hours modifying it!
    • Brumbys with good shells are bloody expensive, I've looked at 2 "cheaper" cars, and walked away from both,  plus after some research spare parts are fairly sparce I'm starting to think that I missed the boat on finding a clean one that is straight (ish) and without alot rust I'm starting to think about a old Hilux as panels and other parts are much more available as they sold tens of thousands of them I use to be indecisive but now I'm not sure
    • A Brumby would probably fit a big metal toolbox in the back... this is how it begins  
    • Picked up a new OEM boot seal for the MX5 today as the old one got ripped a bit by me being a idiot by seeing if I could fit a large metal tool box in it, it didn't fit, and ripped the seal with the corner of the tool box I am still waiting on time to get the cams and new balancer installed, as well as the repairs to the boot Time will not be an issue soon though
    • I was more thinking so it doesn't flop around as much rather than for rotating it. Once you have the balance right, it should rotate well enough, depending on how much resistance there is on the pivot. I think you said the pivot point was on a bearing though didn't you?
