service station brands often share their fuel and facilities, so you may find shell optimax could in fact be the same physical fuel as Mobil 8000

and likewise, you may find Caltex Vortex 98 is the same as BP 98 - not all brands have local facilities in each state, so they share in some parts

this is what i have also heard from mates who work in refineries. This is especially true when parts of the refineries are temporarily shut down for maintenance or upgrades.

hey,

personally ive used both for a while but i think it depends on your car..

v power was good, but got more backfire and less economy, 310 kms max from a tank

im now on bp ultimate, and after using it consistently for about 2 months, economy kept goin up and its now at about 370-400 ish. less beckfire and drives smoother..

try em both for a month will be easy to tell.

hope this helps

  • 3 months later...

This is interesting...

Im in WA, and we've pretty much only had BP Ultimate as our source of 98 ron fuel... caltex vortex 98 and Peak 98 have only recently become available...

I've pretty much always used BP 98 exclusively as a result... and I'm more than certain my ECU has a tuned rom (it runs quite lean!!! 12.7-12.9:1)... it's ok in most conditions, however, will ping slightly at high load/rpm in certain weather conditions. Anyways, after going for a bit of a drive the other night (minor pinging), I remembered there was vortex 98 nearby (needed to refill, refill warning light was intermitently coming on/off). So off I went, and put a good 25Litres or so of it in. Went for a drive for a good twenty to thirty mins to notice if it made any difference... i was actually expecting it to be worse than Ultimate, as everyone seems to praise that crap.

To my suprise, the mild pinging I was having DISAPPEARED. Go figure. The car also seemed to rev/pull more freely at higher rpms ie. 6000rpm to 8000rpm. I was pretty shocked...

Further to this, another guy I know had his silvia (GT30 based turbo) tuned on Peak 98. If he puts bp ultimate in it, it pings. Again, go figure.

I do NOT use bp ultimate only from one place, so I can rule it out as not being a servo-specific issue. Furthermore, I've found what seems to be inconsitency between some servos selling ultimate... ie. I'd be low on juice, so i'd go and fill up, and find my car to be running like shit and/or ping shortly after filling up at some servos. Perhaps some servos are doing the dodgey (ie. selling contaminated fuel, or advertising 95 ron fuel as ultimate??? again this is speculation).

This may just be a WA issue... maybe the refining process for making the fuel is different over here than in the other states? Who knows... all I can say is, Vortex 98 is now my fuel of choice. I've since flogged the crap out of it, to try and get it to ping, but it refuses to!

To add further insult, vortex98 (where I fill up) is about 6-7 cents a litre CHEAPER than ultimate at my local...

These are just my findings, I'm yet to try peak 98, but I will shortly...

i was interested in this, and so ive switched from v power, to BP ultimate ..

ive since gone through two full tanks of bp ultimate, and i have driven exactly the same etc etc and yet im getting almost 80 - 100 km LESS per tank.

anyone know why this might be?

Ive used nothing but V power since july 2005 when i bought my car, so perhaps i should use bp for a bit longer than 2 tanks lol, but i will change back to vpower if it means i get mroe K;s from my tank...

I'm not exactly sure of R34 ecu's capabilities, but if you're giving it some stick, and it detects mild knock, the ECU might be dumping in more fuel... hence the worse consumption... (either that or retarding ign. timing).

    • If it (the code) wasn't still current, it should have gone away by itself by now. No, nothing it 10/10. But it is quite likely. Everything else to do with the ignition could still be responsible (which is wires and connectors). The car is an old piece of shit now, so all the wires and connectors are also old pieces of shit.
    • Lock me in mate, although I'm not sure if I'll be heading up from Goulburn or down from Sydney, either way, return will be back to Goulburn
    • Sounds good, we will aim to be there! @The Bogan I'll give you a shout if you are heading up to campbelltown for the meet too.
    • Before I get to the test day, just to finish off the android head unit. This is a demo from car start up....the standard/host system takes a few seconds to boot (same as all v37) but Android comes up quickly. In this vid I'm using the delivered launcher but have set the default to Agami since which is easier to navigate when if use primarily 5 apps. You can see the host system still takes over when required eg putting it in reverse, and you can switch between Android and not by holding the back button 3 sec. It is pretty responsive (fast) but you can see I had to press harder than expected a couple of times.  I still have the phone connected to the stock system, and that also seamlessly takes over Android music playing. v37-android-demo.mp4 The bigger reason that I put this in though is so that I can use Ecutek directly on the head unit. That gives me a dash with logging (up to 20MB only), high and low value warnings on any parameter etc etc. I've run a USB cable from the Ecutek OBD dongle to a USB input on the unit, easy. v37-ecutek-demo.mp4   The unit did freeze on the launcher the other day, I think Agami was trying to verify the license when it didn't have a data connection...will monitor and report back if there are any other problems but so far I'm very happy with the upgrade.
    • Nah that is just crappy GPS mapping, I did have a small excursion (cold tyres, damp track, surprise!), will post up that when I get a chance.
