Busted For Bov

Hey guys,

Last night I was driving home minding my own business, doing less than 60 in a 60 zone and out of nowhere a cop car comes screaming up behind me with all lights flashing, anyway they pulled me over and checked my license and asked me to pop the hood. They were checking my car for a good couple of minutes, I guess trying to find anything obvious to nail me with...

Anyway, I had to admit that I had a BOV and they said the EPA would be in contact with me soon for an inspection.

Fair enough, I believe there are some laws as to emmissions from having BOVs which I was totally unaware of - so what are my options, besides a huge inconvenience, I'm working a lot and I need my car to get to work and home...

How long do these inspections take? Days? Does it cost me something?

What can I do in place of the BOVs? What will this cost? I really do not have any idea. I bought this car thinking that all I would need to do is service it and replace some parts here and there and eventually do an engine rebuild, but not this.

Advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

as far as i know buddy u dont have to pay anythign for the EPA test, wen the summon u, u just take thwe car there they test ur emissions and ur done, depending on the car it could take anywhere from 5min to 40min. but from the sounds of things u dont have much to worry about.

as for other options for the BOV, either plump it back or hide the atmo BOV is a place where no one can find it.

yeah mate, waste of time having a ATMO bov anyway. Put a stocker on and never look back. I'm running 400+hp at the wheels, and still have the stocker.

Well, u may be let off. They told me that a letter will come from EPA as well, but no letter came for over a month now.Did they give u a fine?

This was your main problem, you admitted something. NEVER admit on the side of the road anything, they have to prove it and if they are not smart enough to find it then they will normally move on to the next motorist. You never be a dick about it, but "Sorry Officer I have no idea what a bov is" is a reasonable answer and in my case somewhat true.

Like your insurance company says, never admit to anything. If it is serious and you need to plea bargain later that is some ammo for you. On the other hand if you don't admit most/all modifications to your insurance company you may have no insurance if you need it.

Nice bit of advise.. .Just what I was thinking after I said it.. oops! Will know better next time. I know not to be a smart ass to cops, there is no point, it just gets you in to extra trouble.

Get your std BOV modded, costs about $100 [uAS does it].

EPA and Exhaust noise inspections are different.

Exhaust noise tests at the approved testers costs money.

EPA full test at the EPA Testing station is free and always has been
