Well today I went to the car and the car wont start. When you flick it to start you can hear the fuel pump pumping but no starter motor. Everything else seems to be working as per usual.

I checked the fuses on the drivers side kick panel and all was in order.

I checked the battery as that seemed fine, The radio / windows and everything work fine.

I disconnected the battery for 1h to see if that had anything to do with it.

Its got me stumped. I thought it could be the imobiliser but that seems to be ok too. I couldnt check the integrity of the immobiliser connections into the cars harness as I had no idea what I was looking at.

The only thing that seems different to usual is that when you move the shifter to reverse there is no revers sound on no revers lights. ( I noticed this when I tried to start it N)

Any idea why there would be no reverse lights or signal ?. Is there a fuse for the Lights that I cant find but surely this wouldnt stop the car from starting ??

Please help me as I am stranded.

I do Ill will check that ? Thanks.

When the ignition is on and where the normal gear indication is there is nothing to say what gear it is in.

Does anyone with M35 have the sear selection when the ignition is on "ON" mine saays nothing.

Hi Dan

Yes my M35 does have an indicator at the bottom of the speedo. It comes on when the ignition is on and show P, R, N etc. Have you had any work done on the car lately? New sound system etc. There is a thread on removing the centre console around the gear selector. It may show you a plug that has not been put together correctly.

Good luck

Sounds like the right idea. Sounds like the computer is not picking up the gear selector and will not let the car start unless it is in D.

Cheers

Thanks Murray, I have had the contre console out in the past and it is possible that there is something wrong there, I will check the connections tomorrow and try to determine if there is something not right.

It seems weard to me that there is an issue now when it had beed working fine for some time.

yeah, no gear signal getting through to ECU, like Murray said, check harnesses. Bad connection or something left off. Also check connections at Auto ECU, drivers kick panel on C34s.

On the drivers kick panel on the M35 there is the fuses as well as some control unit and alot of harness. Whats on the C34s ? Should I unplug the plus and just make sure everything is connected secure ?

I think it would be more like the centre console as I have had this out in the past.

I appreciate your assistance.

like the others, im betting that it is the switch from our shifter not telling the ECU what gear the car is in, thus not letting it start, as a safety measure. In which case im pretty sure that that would not be fused due to it wold only send a really low amperage/low voltage signal.

sounds same as C34, Auto ecu with a large harness, probably start unplugging and replugging all the plugs on centre console first though. just test as you go.

Well everything looks in order in the centre console, The only plugs that get disturbed when removing the console are the heated seats, 4WD syncro, hazards and shifter light. The shifter mechanism has only 1 main plug and this seems good.

The AUTO ecu on the other side kick panel has a hundreds of wires going to it and about 6 connectors. Seems like a lot of wires how would you know where to start.

Did you drive it after you had centre console out ? or something that has happened well after you did any mods ?

The Auto ECU should have fused power, check for power there, the 12V wire or wires should stand out from the rest.

I had been driving I for a while, But hopefull I may have found the problem as I have located another set of fuses and relays that I will have to check tonight. Im keeping my fingers cross as this problem is driving me insane.

Well I finally solved the problem , I was reading through some V35 documentation when it referenced another set of fuses and relays that are not that obvious on initial inspection. The fuse box is located on the passenger side firewall right in the corner. To see the Fuse box you need to remove the battery cover & surround as well as the black plastic window trim.

A simple fuse was all the problem see picture of fuse location.

good to hear, big relief Im sure, any idea what caused it though ?

Yea I know exactly what caused it, When they did the compliance and installed the rear child restraints. (Mine are in the top of rear or the cabin where the tailgate is mounted) and one of the bolts had damaged the rear tailgate harness. It wasnt until I went looking for a reverse light signal for my camera and the tuner that it failed and rendered the car useless.

Basicall if you short the reverse signal to earth you blow the fuse and the car wont start.

Im glad this didnt happen somewhere else away from home or else I would have been stranded with no clue and to make things worse its hard to get the towed with the body kit as there are no accessible tow points.

Now I am trying to work out how to route the video signal through the tailgate to finish the camera install.

Cheers for you help and support.

    • Thanks for your insight, it being basically useless will impact my decision for sure. I thought it may help the engine breath better I guess. But then again, I have also been told that tuning an RB20DE is also not worth it. Exactly, we follow EU Regulations. There is a bit more leeway on older vehicles. My Porsche 924 came without a cat from factory and managed to pass, they still mentioned that I have quite high emissions on it though.
    • My apologies, I stand corrected. Thanks for registering to mention this! And thank you for actually reaching out to the council to clarify. This is the sensible thing to do and the opposite of what I was alluding you were doing. I may have seen too much outrage and hate being fueled on the internet and it has made me a somewhat cynical old man. Sometimes it is easy to forget that there are real people behind websites and accounts. In my defence, CarExpert and CarExplore do read quite similarly at a glance. I shall try and do better in the future. (Please stick around to get the latest scoops on dealing with old Nissan shitboxes )
    • Don't bother. The poor little RB20 doesn't make enough gas flow to challenge the flow capabilities of even the littlest cat, and you won't make any extra power, and all you'll do it soot up your rear bumper. Plus....is Malta not runing under Euro regs?
    • Hey Daniel, sorry to hear that and thanks for posting up for us at a really hard time I only knew SmoothLine through the forums, we never met as we are based in different states, but when he was most active on here he was quite a while back so not many of the current crowd might remember him. I am pretty sure he was active in the Queensland SQU club but that is defunct now too (times are changing and we are all getting older). Farewell SmoothLine!
    • Turns out depending on whether the car was equipped with TCS or not there are different signals coming to the dash, meaning there are different speedo clusters.  Wired in a speedo calibrator box from aliexpress and now works fine.
