Hi there PPL.

I want to put an rb25 rb30 engine in my r33 skyline and I am intalks with someone who can build an engine for me.

I have been :) my head as I am unsure of the pricing.

I have just been given a confirmation of $9745 +about $2200 for Apexi power FC and Software.

All up I am looking at spending $12,000.... Does this sound right???

Thanks,

Shaun.

Shaun, I'm currently putting together a 26/30 and including the 6 throttle inlet I'm calculating about $6500 or so cost including all machining, forged rods and 9.0:1 CP pistons. This will be going up for sale after I'm done and it will be almost the same spec as the engine in my race car (GTS25t) which has been built to safely run 750hp and live longer at about 500+. But as always it depends on the specs you want.

A PFC should be around $1200 or less and the software (FC-Datalogit) about $600 or less secondhand so I would source them myself.

So given they have to make a profit I would assume that price is drive in-drive out. Otherwise they might be asking a bit much.

I assume it includes turbo/turbo's, pipework, cams, valve springs, porting, hoses, oil control mods, etc etc .......all installed, tuned and drive away.

Cheers

Gary

I spent $8500 just on the bottom end to have built. My 25 head is off getting ported and polished. I was going to use a 26 but i already have a Greddy plenum and custon twin turbo manifold to suit the 25.

My plenum was $1200

Turbos and manifold $3000

Haltech E11v2 $2000

1000cc injectors $1000

So 12K is a decent price

Hope you're not polishing the intake side :)

you can get a pretty sweet fresh stock internal long engine with custom plenum for around $5500 from RIPS

but if i were you keep your eyes on geoff's space (not just cause he's good looking)

Or you could just build one yourself for the same price without the nice plenum forged for probably less.

I did a budget build designed for street and capped at around 270rwkw.

rb30 block cleaned and refreshed with rings and bearings. $520

timing belt, head gasket, tensioners, studs, exhaust mani gasket, sealant, thermostat, ect. $670

rb25de head $500

braided oil line and fittings $200

installed and running it cost almost 2 grand on the nose including oil and filters.

I used all my rb20 ancelleries, coilpacks, turbo, ecu, rb20cas ect.

things i had to sort out.

I had to chop up the rb 20 loom and solder on new plugs to fit side feed injectors. i chipped the rb20 ecu and used all my original rb20 sensors. also lengthen some hoses. i did not lower the cross member and have spacers under the bonnet hinges for clearance. the entire package is all in and works perfectly and drives like factory till you get under it.

to tell the truth it was a big job and took 2 weekends and a week of evenings from removing the rb20 to starting and driving the RB30.

I imagine if you were to get it done by a mechanic you would not get any change from $4000 for the same build as i did possibly more.

I did pretty much the same as CEF11E except that I happened to get hold of a prepped block and forged pistons along with the 25DE head for $1500.

Problems I did encounter were I hit R&R straight away and also maxxed out the AFM over 5000rpm. Z32 afm and a tune, also threw in some 550cc injectors while I was there so I'm ready for the new turbo to go on. Setup will be capped at 300rwkw until I'm ready for the next stage of development.. engine will then come out, new rods, balanced, ported, cams etc etc and then see how far the GT35R can go :O

heres a quick rundown of wat i got for my setup, keeping in mind the amount of power u want to chase determines how much u wanna spend.

Forged Pistons

Connecting Rods

Bearings

Gasket Kit

Head Gasket

Machining

Injectors

Fuel Pump

Turbo

Braided Lines and Fitting

N1 Oil Pump

Clutch

JUN OIL COLLAR

Fuel Reg

Exhaust Coating

Water Pump

RB30 Block

Exhaust Manifold

External Wastegate

plenum

throttle body

Q45 AFM

CAMS

CAM GEARS

ur lookn at about 14-16k worth of parts. thats not including wat i have already

PFC - 1500

cooler - 1000 (depending on type)

pod - 100

boost controller - 500 (depending on type)

full turboback exhaust - 2000 (depending on type)

and so on.

the above setup is for about a 500hp setup, using a gt3540

Edited by R34NRG

RB30 block, forged pistons & 25DE head/intake manifold - $1500

Whole RB30 donor engine for crank and rods - $100

Crank machining - $120

Bearings - ~$85

N1 oil pump - $415 (IIRC)

z32 AFM + plug - $350

Denso 550cc injectors - $900

Tune/remap - $660

That is what is in there so far, for a little over $4k it's making a real torquey 245rwhp @12psi through an RB25 turbo.

Waiting to go on:

GT35R (GT3540/GT3582) - $1600

High mount exhaust manifold (secondhand) - $150 (needs gate flange welded on)

44mm TiAl gate - ~$420 (I think)

Intake manifold, GTR plenum bit cost me $100 and probably looking at another couple of hundred to get it welded up.

Lets say another $500 for miscellaneous pipework and bits n pieces.

Another tune/remap - $660

Everything else was a straight swap from my RB20, oh and I do have splitfire coils but running standard ones right now as I was trying to diagnose a misfire problem, appears to be loom related, have located a brand new coil harness for $120!!

So for about $7.5k I should* be making a lazy 300rwkw with mucho nuts down low.

*Should make that easily, leaving standard throttle body in as a sort of bottle neck to keep power down.. don't really want to go over 400rwhp with stock rods..

Yeah $100 for a complete RB30E, was even at a machine shop! so I told the guy "look mate, all I'm going to do it pull the crank and rods out and throw the rest in the bin, if you want to pull it out and keep the rest.." so I didn't even have to go pick the engine up and strip it, he pulled the crank and machined it for me, $100+$120 later I walk out with a nice fresh crank :D

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
