Backfiring is usually from restarted timing. loosen the screws on your crank angle sensor and turn it full clock wise if it pings wind it back a tad.

Also check that your igniter is earthing properly, my car was running retarded timing even with CAS turned fully clock wise until I ran a separate earth wire too my igniter.

You have now repeated that twice. Do you feel that you should be offering this advice knowing the consequences of what you are suggesting?

  • 2 weeks later...

I havent had a chance to order new coilpacks yet. funds have been tight!(despite working for a banke :D so car still missfires when you rev over 4500-5000. I redid all the solder connections in my AFM about a month ago and have replaced my O2 sensor im still stuggling to get 300km to a tank.

When baking off the gas to change gears im getting alot of backfire. especially when downshifting/engine breaking. Ive been reading around heaps and am wondering how big an impact my atmosphere blowoff has on fuel economy (despite being illegal id hate to lose the "ptsuuuu" sound of my blowoff) ? In the last week ive started to get exhaust soot all over my rear bar. This hasnt been a problem before??? whats going on things seem to be

    • Thanks mate 👍 The car was brought into the UK by a USAF mechanic until he was stationed back to the US, one owner later I bought her back in 2009. Luckily the only corrosion was on the sill seams, so once taken back to metal and treated and sealed all ok, I then undersealed the car myself and check yearly and treat any corrosion which to be honest is zero. She's garaged most of the time and hardly ever driven in the rain, but as you say most are rotten unfortunately, I was lucky in finding her as she was and still is in excellent condition.
    • Stunning car.  Looks amazing!  You're in the UK?  How the hell do you stop your car rotting away beneath you?  British cars are the WORST I've ever seen in regards to rust.  Some of the cars SR Autobody have done are borderbeyond saving.
    • not a date code? or a foundry code?
    • I have up to date pics of the engine build and turbo conversion over on my instagram @skpro_jects if you want to take a deeper look.   Basically the exhaust manifold is straight bolt on and the ports match (they arent any smaller than a 25 or 26 head).    the intake ports are different shape so the 20/25det manifold will bolt up but wont match properly or seal. You will need to port match using the 25det gasket as a stencil. Personally i ran the entire stock 20neo intake setup and have configured the swirl valves and torque valve to work based on my custom parameters to help with off boost response and spool. But this is using a standalone aem v2 ecu. The stock 20det ecu wont be able to control them.
    • Hi. a little later but if the topic is here. So...the exhaust is the same and you can use 25/Turbo or any aftermarket? What about intake side? Is it too "plug n play" or? (i do not remember for 100% but i think that one intake to head gasket was little bit different than on the RB25 - i bought gasket kit way back) I know that even if it "plug" those butterfly swirls would cause ECU to be confused or?   Just asking for the info 🙂 and of course the RB25 things are easier to come by
