Just devils advocate here JAGR33 :)

Is fairness in comparsion then only acheived by comparing one car with itself, on the same dyno, with the same bolt ons and the same tuner?

That means even BoostR's results aren't meaningful to my car and by the same logic they aren't meaningful to my choice between 2530's and -5's given my car/tuner/dyno/bolt ons are different.

I could follow your opinion expressed as my guide but, I kinda don't know you ( I'm sure your a top bloke tho') and I can't see why you hold an answer on this subject yet. I can't see how the -5's make the 2530's look silly as yet?

I'm certainly not elevating myself to an expert here as all I did was took a little time to see if the only data we have makes a case for the -5's superiority. It doesn't but, that needn't be the end of the examination. There are a few guys like BoostR who are now offering some driving insights. I'd like to consider that worth some weight even though cars/mods/tuner are different to mine. And if we allow that sort of comparison then giving a little weight to the data we have is sensible too.

How many times do people ask questions like; "what sort of power can I expect?" "what sort of power do these turbo's make?"

The boost building thing is interesting. Would people agree that more boost building earlier is only good if it leads to the expected extra power at lower rpms?

Again from the examples we have, I see that in the 'best' examples of the 2530's both on unopened and built motors produce a better bottom end power experience than the best examples we have of the -5's. This could be due to tuning so it would be worth trying to see if it is or not. This perhaps will help guys out with -5's and other turbos if it's something fundamental. My guess is the cam timing and possibly on the built motors compression ratio/setup but, what are the specifics?

Not trying to bash the -5's here either. I'd rather like to become a believer too given they are so cheap.

I'm sure your a nice bloke too... ;)

I'm not implying that 2530's are a crap turbo, I'm saying that from my experiences mainly information that I gather from a workshop here in Melbourne that works mainly on GTR's is that the -5's are superior in how they make the power, they are more responsive than the 2530's but don't make as much top end. This workshop I'm talking about has done a lot of R&D on GTR's and what makes them go fast for mainly street and circuit, so response and low end power is the focus, so why the -5's are used and not the 2530's...

Anyway, I guess people will eventually work out whats the best turbo setup for their car, it sometimes takes 2 or 3 goes.. well it did for me!!!! :)

Ive had -5, hks gtss and hks 2510 hell even 2530's and I can tell you, -5's are the go in all honest if you have a good tuner you can get them to hit full boost as quick as the 2510 or even the ss (maybe a bit later but only marginal) and the power gains are a lot better than the gtss, 2530's are just laggier thats all they will make power but imho dont drive as nice as the -5's . I know 2 renowned tuners that swear by -5's and I think one of them is where you go GTRBOS if im not mistaken.

well i think im gona go for the -5, the workshop i take it to is dominic at protek automotive, im very happy how he tunes my car and he has recommended me to get these turbos on my gtr, obviously he knows what his talking about and i know how he is because ive seen heaps of gtr he has built and i was very impressed but yer i think im going to go for the gt28-60r -5 tubros, that is my last choice, im nor saying 25/30 are shit but in my needs i realy think that th -5 will sit me more and im morw after circuit and 1/4 mile times not top end power or else i will just go a huge single if i want to, guys i really thank you for this, at the end of the day just didnt want no arguements here and it seemed pretty good, it seemed to be a fun thread lol but yer i think i will just go for the -5 and get my cams and injectorsd and my z32 afms installed and i should be making some nice power at all 4s,

thanks again guys,

cheers

Hey yeah Im one of those high powered GT-R's hehe, anyways yeah Dom know what he's talking about, so take his advice you cant go wrong.

Cheers

Ray

omggg i think iseen ur car der last time on da hoist, they were doing something to the exhuast and you got the twin mufflers like the kakimoto twin dual system, im pretty sure that was ur gtr lol but yer dom is mad and im really happy with him, my gtr should be going there in the next week, one of my mates mohammad goes there, really really fast gtr plates are GTR800, im pretty sure u know it and also his brotheren lore goes there GTRB6 his also my mate and they are both like 10sec cars so yer hopefully i will get to that extreme butjust waiting to get full license but yer man ill carch up with ya one day man, get all the gtr's together and go for some kind of cruise lol, anyway have a good one bro

Yeah for sure would be up for a cruise, mine has the twin exhaust like mo's a hks one. The car ran a 10.9 but I have sold it now, looking for an r34 gt-r

no probz man, good luck looking for a r34 gtr bro, plenty of nice 1s going around, so what you wrecken bro, u think i should just go for the gt28/60r -5 turbos, dom even thinks that the hks 25/60 are pretty good aswell but he said that the -5 are better but whats your opinion man

    • Also had a look at the Nissan JP website looks like the 400r has a slightly shorter ratio than than the regular V37 3.133 VS 2.937 which from a guy who has driven both 3.69 vs 4.11 ratios in the S15 is bugger all. Seems that the AUTO Z runs the same ratio as the 400R but can't find any info as to if its an open or LSD? More often than not the auto LSD is open
    • Do not replace the power steering lines with this stuff. If it's anything like the Chase Bays stuff it will leak and be worse than stock. The reason why the reservoir is on the LH/passenger side of the car is because that's just where the reservoir was most convenient to fit. Don't overthink this stuff. The intake/cold side of the engine is pretty busy on these cars. And again, the hardpipe is designed to be a janky power steering cooler. In theory you can replace it with a real power steering cooler but that's really only for track use where boiling the fluid is a distinct possibility. Start with the low pressure lines feeding the pump from the reservoir. Make sure there isn't a bunch of junk in the reservoir filter. Be careful to not get ATF all over the engine bay. I hate dealing with ATF spills, you can clean it up and the slightest crevice will still release more oil that can still drip over time. You also want to inspect for leaks before you make a mess and can't tell what happened. Most likely you have a leak somewhere that is allowing fluid out and air in. Failing that it's allowing air in but not fluid out. Only place I can really see that happening is on the low pressure side because the pump will pull a slight vacuum to draw fluid in. Everything after the pump is high pressure or lower pressure, approaching atmospheric by the time it returns to the reservoir.
    • I did a skidpan night at SMSP this week, it was much cheaper than $350. But yeah, you need to slap an LSD in that thing.  I put an OS Giken in the 370Z and it's f**king MARVELOUS even compared to Nissan's viscous LSD. So you're saying it's free now that it's a housing estate? 😂
    • Nah, the car seems to run exactly as it did prior, in saying this it does "seem" to be better down low, like more eager to rev, but that may be 100% placebo effect from intake noise But, I'm not worried about it at all, in the end it is a fairly low compression NA engine that has a well shrouded intake,  if it is getting hotter IAT I cannot notice anything negative performance wise from the seat of my pants thrashing it about on the street or sitting in traffic, so meh, car now now makes induction noise so I'm happy
    • Do you have an IAT sensor? It's worth checking it to see. You may be suprised how little gap you actually need to flood your engine with hot air. (I tape up my airbox for a reason) :p
