Hey guys. I just got my first skyline about a month ago and i'm loving it. I've been lurking here for ages trying to learn as much as i can and i've decided to start some mods on my R32.

I've already got a split dump with 3 inch exhaust and a pod filter and fmic with manual boost controller. I want to upgrade to a bosch 040 (or similar) fuel pump and also an rb25 turbo.

My question is about tuning? I've gotten a quote for $1300-1500 for a remap. Is this because you can't do live tuning on the stock ECU or something? It seems pretty expensive, and for that price i could nearly get an aftermarket ecu and have that tuned couldn't i?

Is nistune a better option?

I'm sure you are sick of hearing this noob question but i searched and couldn't find anything specific to prices and good tuners near the Penrith/Western Sydney area (i don't mind a drive to find a good place).

So as far as my engine management options are, what do you recommend?

I was quoted 2 days work aswell. So it's probably a long and arduous task to remap an ECU. Hence the price.

Just been looking around... would i save myself some money if i bought a nistune and installed it myself, then took it to a tuner to get it programmed?

who quoted you $1300-$1500 for a remap?

Silverwater Auto Services (SAS)

I've been quoted $350 for a remap.

If you are in the market for it a power FC is a good option. But if you choose a remap ask around for prices!

You could also go piggyback, SAFCII/NEO for example.

For tuners in Western Sydney i recommend Unigroup or CRD.

it's not. it's an hour install at most and then a tune.

Link 3 Sydney workshops who can do the job are listed. All have a good rep. I'd be talking to all 3 before making a decision.

edit: SAS used to be your only option about 5 years ago. Not anymore. They still try to charge like they have a monopoly

Thanks alot guys. I'd already spoken to unigroup but they don't do remaps unfortunately, only nistune.

I'll hit up the other two and hopefully be in business.

Cheers

Lol... So what were they gonna do with my car for 2 days?

Hi mate I just got a remap tune and the cam gears dialled in

by Dr Drift and the results are f@#king awesome and cost

no where near the $1300 -$1500 you were quoted. He is well

worth the drive down there or can do a mail order chip.He

would be 1 of the hand full of people that I would let touch

my car he is that good.I choice to go this path as it still

uses a lot of the features of the std computer and cheaper

than a PFC.If you live in the sydney area I can let you

have a drive if you like

I've heard nothing but rave reviews about people seeing Dr. Drift. But the 16 hours round trip kinda put it out of options. Interested in the possibility of a mail order chip. How would that work? Would it be accurate enough even tho he's never seen or touched my car?

The mods you are doing to your car are the exact same things that everyone else does.

Thanks man i'll hit them up.

For that price get a POWER FC its better in the long run you can retune whenever you like and most competent tuners can tune it easily within precise variables for your car...

DONT YOU DARE SPEND 1300-1500 on a remap THAT WOULD BE A BIG MISTAKE get the standalone it will prove its weight in gold.

Also if you cant find a GTST power Fc you can use a GTR power Fc from a R32orR33 as long as it is D-jetro so you can bypass the maf and run it from a map sensor.

I am using one on my GTS4...

ive basically got the same mods on my r32. Rb25 turbo not in. I bought the CEF11E remap. Havent got it installed yet, but seems to be the cheapest way to go at only $100. Ive also bought a safc2 for a finer tune once on the dyno if needed.

Thats the way im gonna go. I guess its about how much u want to spend really.

I have seen plenty of remaps with daughter boards.

Cheers

Gary

yeah, i know. Its the coilovers vs "coilovers" argument again.

But there are 2 distinct ways of achieving the same result with a stock ecu. replace the stock prom, or slap in a daughter board. I would not class a daughter board as a remap, it implies a different method.

    • My idle is set at 950rpm though - Moving the timing around 20 degrees is not really what I'd call a calm idle. That said... neither is chop, by definition. The LS ECU likes to adjust timing to hold idle as opposed to air. It'd work, but generally speaking there'd be a discrepancy in the base idle and the IACV would want to move the timing around anyway to maintain said idle. I think I'm just going to keep the timing steady anyway. Preserve my engine mounts.  My aircon is now officially regassed. As the guy was reversing I noticed my reverse lights do not operate, along with my reverse cam. This is a bit distressing, because 100% of guides talk about which wire to connect to backup cams as "the goes with the [other color] wire". Often when doing conversions. Unfortunately the R34 colour wires aren't documented Unfortunately I had a T56 Magnum gearbox with it's reverse switch, which also isn't documented. Unfortunately there's definitely not documentation for people with both of these in the one car. Unfortunately I forgot. After many hours of this, I have a reverse cam and reverse lights again. The wire going through the trans tunnel to the reverse switch had broken. Upon inspection, it looks like this one wire had about 7 spade terminals and extensions in it.. for reasons I cannot possibly comprehend. I also spent the 750 hours required to clean up the wiring behind my head unit which now looks like this: This is a monumental improvement relative to what used to be there WRT triple gauges, head unit, traction control, wideband controller, and whatever the f**k OEM stuff still exists there in various states of connectivity/needed. Next step is to check in at the Exhaust shop to see/confirm how much clearance I have, to decide what mid mufflers or 'resonators' (which are just straight through, narrower mufflers) I can add and hopefully cut out a lot of exhaust leaks, pinhole, v-band or otherwise. But first step will be to 'take a look' before the next step.
    • Fark the AFM card and Nistune, Haltech Nexus S3, DBW, cruise control, flex fuel, dis dat.
    • It's most likely the bolt/bush where the cover bolts back wore and allowed cover to move forward.
    • Still haven't put the injectors and R35 AFM in so we can tune the bloody thing for the HG highflow it got mid last year! I think I can forecast the upgrade path to a bigger twin scroll, external gate, Haltech, flex setup, Samsonas, dis dat, etc will be .... a while away!
    • Should have taken that opportunity to slot in a twin scroll turbo setup. Maybe next time.
