Well as the title says i am wondering what rods to put in my motor, i have a set of tested and preped stock items and a set of spool rods but have heard and seen photos of both smashed. Now i was aiming high like the 1000hp at tyres mark, but am cutting it back cause it will never see traction otherwise, looking for around the 700 mark maybe slightly more.

Been looking at Howards rods, argos, etc etc etc, what do i do???

need some options of what people have used

A little bit lighter. I chucked out the rod specs for the argo's. The carrillo ones are around somewhere

Carrillo use their own CARR rod bolts. They can be used for unlimited rebuilds. If something happens to your piston rings or pistons you can undo and refasten them as many times as you like. Some very quick cars use both of these rods - one I know of is in the mid 8's.

If you have the money to spend just remember that the carrillo rods are lighter, about 70-80 grammes per rod if I recall...

Less reciprocating weight will give you faster acceleration and higher rpm.

The difference is nearly 1k between the Argo v Carrillo and you wont get much change out of 2500.

any h beam rod is rated to the 1000hp mark so i don't know what you are all talking about....

its the rod bolt that must be a good quality item......

the only way it would throw a rod thru you block would be a shitty build or the rod bolt has let go.... and that's the only reason, you will never bend a h beam rod unless it comes down to massive pinging or hydraulic lock.... end of story and if it does ping, it will loosen the rod bolts anyways...

Ive seen Carillos, Argo, Eagles, Scat and Spool rods fail - all have been due to oil starvation. Any rod will fail if it welds itself to the crank at high rpm.

Rod choice all comes down to your budget and personal preference ( and what you hear )

My engine makes 560rwhp and turns to 8000 rpm daily - it is over 12 months old and has done 126 power runs on a dyno in that time.

There are a few XR6 turbo engines making 620 - 650 rwhp with Spool rods now.

So I know they are good and there are plenty of people and trade customers using them in big power street, drag and drift cars and have been for years now.

Hope that helps.

    • My idle is set at 950rpm though - Moving the timing around 20 degrees is not really what I'd call a calm idle. That said... neither is chop, by definition. The LS ECU likes to adjust timing to hold idle as opposed to air. It'd work, but generally speaking there'd be a discrepancy in the base idle and the IACV would want to move the timing around anyway to maintain said idle. I think I'm just going to keep the timing steady anyway. Preserve my engine mounts.  My aircon is now officially regassed. As the guy was reversing I noticed my reverse lights do not operate, along with my reverse cam. This is a bit distressing, because 100% of guides talk about which wire to connect to backup cams as "the goes with the [other color] wire". Often when doing conversions. Unfortunately the R34 colour wires aren't documented Unfortunately I had a T56 Magnum gearbox with it's reverse switch, which also isn't documented. Unfortunately there's definitely not documentation for people with both of these in the one car. Unfortunately I forgot. After many hours of this, I have a reverse cam and reverse lights again. The wire going through the trans tunnel to the reverse switch had broken. Upon inspection, it looks like this one wire had about 7 spade terminals and extensions in it.. for reasons I cannot possibly comprehend. I also spent the 750 hours required to clean up the wiring behind my head unit which now looks like this: This is a monumental improvement relative to what used to be there WRT triple gauges, head unit, traction control, wideband controller, and whatever the f**k OEM stuff still exists there in various states of connectivity/needed. Next step is to check in at the Exhaust shop to see/confirm how much clearance I have, to decide what mid mufflers or 'resonators' (which are just straight through, narrower mufflers) I can add and hopefully cut out a lot of exhaust leaks, pinhole, v-band or otherwise. But first step will be to 'take a look' before the next step.
    • Fark the AFM card and Nistune, Haltech Nexus S3, DBW, cruise control, flex fuel, dis dat.
    • It's most likely the bolt/bush where the cover bolts back wore and allowed cover to move forward.
    • Still haven't put the injectors and R35 AFM in so we can tune the bloody thing for the HG highflow it got mid last year! I think I can forecast the upgrade path to a bigger twin scroll, external gate, Haltech, flex setup, Samsonas, dis dat, etc will be .... a while away!
    • Should have taken that opportunity to slot in a twin scroll turbo setup. Maybe next time.
